Tutorial: Uploading files with various FTP applications

Once you have found the sound file you want on the website, just click the "download" link. You only need to use FTP when you want to upload sounds.
What if you can't find the download link, is there another way to download the file?
To download a file you always need a link because there is the adress of the file on the server.
Without it you can't have access to it.

I don't think I can make it any clearer without taking a screenshot of a page and circling the download link.

I don't mean to be caustic, but I don't see how this is so difficult. Maybe we need a little "download" icon to attract the eye. (perhaps one ocument-save.svg" rel="nofollow">of these? LGPL/CC-BY-SA)
Or is it that people aren't getting you have to go to the sample view page to download?
Anyway welcome to freesound, I hope you figure out how to take advantage of this great resource.
It does seem, that for a lot of people, a normal Left click on "Download" doesn't do the trick. If that's true for you, do a Right click and choose "save target as" or "save link as".

i agree with this being said..however some of the links i noticed (awhile back haven't check in a few months) didn't have the download link next to them. so perhaps some people are having problems with links that aren't there. hence why some are using the "save target as" way.

Well, bram added the "download" button, it used to be just a text link so I think that having the prominent button with arrow will help. If you're seeing files now with no download button, please report that as a bug.
Also, just trying freesound on windows+internet explorer here, I see that a left click with default settings opens up the file in windows media player, I think it's only saved to a temporary directory. The solution of course is to do "Save Target As..." (IE).
I never actually experienced this problem before with windows+firefox+whatever else I had set up, or mac+camino like I use mostly now.
(Aside, I think I was replying to a post when I put up that image, but it looks like that post may have been deleted so now it's a bit out of context.)
I actually submitted two sounds today, but to tell the truth, it was...the third most 'Tech-based' Frustration I've ever had to deal with! I had all these great sounds that I was ready to contribute, but then I find that .WMAs are not on the list. Most of the time I actually make sound recordings are sort of like 'fillers' for places that have nothing but text, and usually I just record them right on Windows Movie Maker, mostly because the Windows 'Sound Recorder' function (which makes them directly into .WAV) won't ever show up my my start menu OR desktop. Is there any possible way to get them on there?

Not everyone uses windows, WMA is generally compressed and is owned by Microsoft so you are seriously limiting the potential users of your work. Audacity is free, and it's all about audio, like this site.
I salute you though for finding a way to export audio from WMM. I fired up Windows movie maker for the first time ever today and it totally beats me how you even export sound only at all from it. It's not like I am a n00b to video editing - I use Premiere and even virtualdub and Avisyth at times. WMM did my head in.
Filezilla is an excellent program, if you're on a Mac I would recommend Transmit (although it isn't free unfortunately).
If you all want, I could make a screenshot video explaining (and showing) what you need to do.

A simple answer:
Start/AllPrograms/Accessories/Entertaintment/right click sound recorder/pin to startmenu and send to desktop as shortcut.
Now you should have it on your start menu and your desktop.
I have used audacity also but it's geared more towards multitrack recording. I still use cool edit 96 (google it) and actually found it and the key to unluck it on the web a few days ago to put on my new laptop.
There is also a cool little VST host called wavosaur (kvr) which lets you run plug ins which is a whole nother story (is that even a word?). You can record, edit, etc.
Wavlab seems cools so far, it's fairly new freeware and does all sorts of file conversions.
I actually found that movie maker software on my 3 year old PC yesterday never knew it was there. I found it on the laptop and wondered if I had it on the desktop too. Kinda strange. I knew all the obscure stuff but never saw loaded software?
After making 2 new videos out of nothing with transistions, effects and a soundtrack while laying in bed watching TV, I wondered how there managed to be such horrible video out there if it's so easy. It does seem to crash a lot on the laptop though and losing my work makes me smash stuff, which is all too easy with a laptop, save often.
Damn battery died in my legendary radio shack clip on microphone so I used the built in mics on the laptop.... ahhhhh! I have some noise and some lofi samples but who would use that... seems like a waste to put it in the machine... I really wish they would take out all the noisy 'mic preamps" from computers and stick with line in. Add a mono line input cause powered condensors can give a hot enough signal without all that obnoxious hiss. The reason I wanted that mic was to take the laptop out into the fields about 75 miles north of where I live and record some cows... or at least that's what I'll tell the sheriff officers when they come to see why I am picking around in cow poop collecting mushrooms.

I attempted to upload multiple sound files via ftp and the connection keeps stopping. I am using a cable modem that is normally fast. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?
Please help. I am using WS_FTP LE but alas can not get onto the ftp site. I use ftp://www.freesound.org/ as the host/name address and then my username and password. My username is simple with no wierd characters and my password is just letters and #s. Any ideas? the ftp says failed to connect to ftp when I try.
Also I am not too keen on using the java applet.
