First of all, I feel I must mention I like freesound.org a lot. Big thanks for all your wonderful work and effort
The basic interface of NG works very well, sure it can be a bit busy and/or messy looking but it works fast and well.
BW looks very nice and clean, however the clean look comes at a price.
Basically when I search for a certain sound a quick glance at the search results, their wave shape and playlength, will already tell me a lot, followed by a quick press on the play button if a sound actually seems interesting.
Within BW this whole process is made more cumbersome, most of which can be fixed relatively easily:
- fewer results are shown in a single page, slowing down the search. As mentioned in other threads: perhaps give an option to select the amount of results per page.
- quick glances are harder because a lot of scrolling is required to actually get to see the wave. In other threads the abundant use of whitespace, which is the main cause of this, is already mentioned. For me personally the keywords are given way to much space, with the border and the whitespace.
- playlength is sometimes obscured by the wave, different textcolor might help, or perhaps add a white glow or dropshadow to the text.
- playbutton is hidden until a mouseover/hover and as the minimalist design does not have any indication of the border of the soundplayer, it becomes unnecessary harder to quickly find and click the playbutton. Best option would be to not hide the buttons completely, but leave them 10% visible, or have a better indication of the player's border so moving the mouse to the correct spot is guided somewhat.
So overall, the beta version of GW I'm looking at right now looks better, yet for me it functions worse.
Just my 2cts
keep up the good work!
Thanks for your message. As you mention, I think all you concerns have also been discussed in other threads so I'm not giving particular answers here. The summary is: we'll look at how to improve these issues.
