The new interface looks great, but there was only one real design issue i had with the previous theme and that didn't get solved here, it's that the play button on sounds is really tiny, and right next to the loop button, idk how many times i've misclicked that button looking through sounds. The site would be so much easier to use if the whole preview is the play button, with a small loop button in the corner.

Whatever you do please keep option to use Old UI.

On the new UI, my browser spellcheck no longer works in the tag field.
So beacuse of the new UI there will be more misspelled, consequently useless, tags. 😞

@Timbre: I looked into the spell check issue but the main problem is that browsers will typically only run spellcheck when usr finished typing a word (for example when hitting space bar), and this will trigger the creation of the new tag in the new UI. There's no way to run the spell checker on the elements which are already shown as tags. The only solution that I know is to remove completely the tag styling and make the tags field a simple text field (as it used to be in the old UI), but the whole idea of adding the styling was to make it clearer how tags are applied to the sounds. I would hope that the impact of the spellchecker not working in the tags input field will be minimal. If we have the intuition that this is not being the case, then we could consider further modifications.

@MOBIArte: this is a nice suggestion. I'll think if there is a way to implement some per-sound volume without adding more stuff to the UI. Maybe using some key+click combination that will show a volume slider while moving the mouse or something like that. This would be a non-obvious feature but it would be a power user thing anyways.

A workaround is to temporarily write the tags in the description field, where spellcheck still works, then copy & paste them into the tag field, after spellcheck has done its thing.

That's what I do anyway because that's the only way you can copy and paste your set of tags.

Anyway, where is the People page? I can't see who's online anymore. That helped me discover a lot of underknown users.

I have it on the list to add a button to copy/paste tags (and other fields) in sound description forms, so it will be implemented at some point.

About the people page, it has mainly been replaced by the charts page (although the functionallity is not the same). There is no info on the users currently online anymore. We thought it made no sense as there are no real-time communication features in Freesound anyway (no chat for example). Maybe the charts page can help you discover new users. Also in the front page the streams of sound should be useful.

After trying the new UI a long time ago and found it **impossible** for me to use (I posted here at the time about the issues that made it unusable for me), I've kept solidly with the old and properly ergonomic UI.

A couple of days ago I clicked a link to one of my recordings here and was shocked to find that it opened in the new UI (presumably the current, pre-release version), and that none of the issues I'd reported on this forum, and which others at that time were complaining about, had materially changed. Frankly I was appalled and in despair, because when that UI is enforced on me I shall not be able to manage my uploads (no proper vertical scrolling of the list) without undue stress, and, for my own wellbeing I'd have to discontinue uploading to FS, my future uploads (of my Nature-Symphonies, see https://freesound.org/people/Philip_Goddard/packs/39136/) going just to YouTube.

The spreading of lists horizontally is a complete no-no for me. While I could no doubt adjust over time to other adverse changes (particularly with regard to contrast, as I have developing cataracts), lack of a simple scrolling list of my uploads would be a complete show-stopper.

I give due notice that, as the real show-stopping issue apparently still hasn't been addressed, it looks as though FS is about to cut itself off from one of its most substantial uploaders.

I'm sorry to read that, your contributions to Freesound are awesome and I think all of us value them a lot. I remember the feedback you provided some time ago about the new UI.

The two criticisms were about contrast and bout the vertical sound lists. Font colours were changed since then to increase contrast, also the sound descriptions in the grid and vertical list displays were changed from grey to black to also help with the contrast.

In the new UI sounds are typically displayed in a grid (most notably user profile and front page), this is to maximise the number of sounds available on the screen without scrolling. But the list view is still available (and the default) in the search page. As @strangehorizon pointed out, the way to see a list of your uploaded sounds is now using the search page. In fact this is no different than from the old ui, you'll see a link to "all your sounds" in your profile page (also accessible at the same url as with the old ui http://freesound.org/people/Philip_Goddard/sounds/), but now this list is displayed in the search page instead of in a dedicated page. This is actually nice because it means you can now sort and filter the list in ways which were not possible before. In addition, you now have the "manage sounds page" which should help you keep track of the upload process. It is true that this page uses the grid display, but you'd only be using it to keep track of sounds upload process so once sounds are published, you'd simply use the other list.

I hope that this information can help you find a way to use Freesound that works for you. Also feel free to report other issues that you find with the new UI and I'll be happy to see if we can do anything about them. Thanks!

Thanks greatly for that clarification, Frederic. That's a great relief to know. The grid displays are useless to me, but as long as I have a simple one-item-per line list of my own uploads for my management purposes, and the same for all search listings, then I can no doubt make do with the new UI, even though I find the new interface a bit stressfully disorienting.

Incidentally, one thing I forgot to mention — when I unexpectedly got one of my upload pages opened in the new UI, one thing that jumped out at me as needing changing was the use of a jarring strong red for certain elements. That really is stressmaking for anyone, whether or not they consciously notice the effect. Such a strident colour has a genuinely useful purpose of course, but only for urgent notifications and major warnings.

On my own sites a long time ago I sometimes used strong red to draw attention to various things, but soon got bugged by the inappropriateness of that. My solution? — where red is appropriate at all I use a darker and thus more subdued red. My CSS files all have the style definition, which seems to me to work well:

.colorDarkRed{color:#c00}

In just a few places I do use strong red, but only for real 'red warnings' (my pioneering Clarity of Being site does have some here and there), and used only on reasonably small-sized text or elements in order not to make the whole page feel jarring.

The red colour is used as the accent colour in the whole website. It is used for links and in some buttons(only the important ones). I'm afraid this we won't be able to change as it is really in the core of the design. However you might be able to use some custom rule in your browser that darkens the red colour? (for example using a browser extension like https://stylebot.dev).

Oh my goodness, really how very silly! Well, that's not exactly a show-stopper for me, but why be attached to such an inappropriate detail? — It's like a manager making all their staff wear lipstick and claiming that it's a core part of their house style so it can't be changed!

I don't accept the reasoning, but haven't time to go chasing after such details!

It would be great to be able to set a default license type so that we can skip the license part of describing sounds and have that part autofilled.

This is in fact how the player works! You can click anywhere on the player (not only the play button) and it will play the sound. It will start from the place where you clicked, but if you click close to the starting point, it will trigger it right from the start.

This message is for freesound team. I encountered a problem with my apple device to access my bookmarks in my user profile page, voice over tell me menus commands and nothing after, I can't click to see my bookmarks, but on pc, yes. The rest is ok, I can play sounds, view packs and others. Possible to resolve it for ios devices or this new interface is the final?

@Tealc166: I understand that you can't see the list of bookmark categories in the bookmarks page. I made a small update that hopefully fixes that. Let me know!
