Bram,
right now the 'most active contributors list' is ordered by the 'number of minutes' hock: , whatever that means. Bug or feature ?
Not kidding, I really don't like seeing my nick on top anywhere, if it's a new feature I would rather stop uploading (nah, I'm a junkie, I would probably shift nickname...
Actualy, a little while ago, I was thinking of suggesting that the most active freesounders should be rated by how many hours worth of sounds they've uploaded, but I never did...
whatever, it makes sense to me. and seems fair...
and...
YOUR NUMBER ONE!
Con-graduations!
Like hello_flowers said, this is what I think too :wink: ,
because file size, file count or the samples resolution, is not important ,
this is the total sound duration that is important ,
that's the real way I think to estimate the contribution of each members :mrgreen: ...
uhh... but it takes a lot of time, imagination and effort to actually *design* a good sample, even a short one. We field recordist will always appear on top if you score on the accumulated sample duration (as it makes no difference for us to get 6 seconds or 6 minutes of, say, waves on the beach), that's unfair to designers, I think...
(actually, I don't like to see myself as Freak-number-one on the block
Kay, PCM, chill... :? Do we really need such violent sarcasm? Don't bite my friggen head off about it! Sorry, I know very well that it does take time and effort to make samples, even short ones...
Maybe it should be changed to "Most dedicated freesounder"...
Maybe I don't care about getting ranked in a list after all... I think I'll just stop posting replies to topics that have to do with the setup of Freesound, not because of PCM, just because I decide it doesn't matter to me if I'm on any list.
I think I've shifted my motives towards Freesound, for the better. From now on, I will only upload sounds I've worked hard on and put time into, and that will truly be useful to people. In fact, I think I'll even try to spend (a lot) more time on every sound I make, not just ones for freesound, but anywhere. I'm going to apply myself to my work, try harder to make each sound as good as it can be...
Ahhh... Well, I feel good now...
the perfect measurement:
should take into account the time the user has been on freesound, the nr of files he has uploaded, the nr of times those files have been downloaded, the nr of votes for the files and the average of the vote, the lengh of all his files and if the files are compressed (good) or not (bad!), the number of forum posts he has, the number of comments his files got, the number of packs he has and the nr of times those were downloaded, ....
if anyone can come up with one formula that makes everyone happy, be my guest.
if anyone feels up to the task, I can make the query that gives you a nice excel sheet with all this data
that said, total duration does look nicer than nr of files, but obviously isn't ... perfect.

...the time the user has been on freesound, the nr of files he has uploaded, the nr of times those files have been downloaded, the nr of votes for the files and the average of the vote, the lengh of all his files and if the files are compressed (good) or not (bad!), the number of forum posts he has, the number of comments his files got, the number of packs he has and the nr of times those were downloaded...
Man, I was almost about to make that exact suggestion! But I thought I had rambled on my soapbox for long enough, so I didn't.
either way, I think there've probably been a lot of others to suggest this anyways...
Anyways, yeah... :?
I think that will make for us an system for scoring members, like some forum I saw :evil:
But there is more Justice in that system
Now we must determine the formula of scoring for each categories,
Time score (Ts), for how long the user has been on freesound, for instance:
Ts = int( 0.07 * D ), where "D" is the number of days
Vote score (Vs), the bonus for the number of vote for samples, for instance:
Vs = int( 0.02 * V ), where "V" is the number of votes
Average score (As), the bonus for average of the vote for each samples, for instance:
As = int( 0.1 * A ), where "A" is the average of the vote for each samples
about uncompressed samples, find something that penalize members that have more that 20mins
and that the uncompressed samples count is more that 45% of the total samples for the member...
and the total Score, for instance:
Ts = Ts + Vs + As + ...
that"S need ajust but that"S an beginning :mrgreen: ....
The number of downloads per sample is probably more important than votes. Downloads shows usefulness ... or at least deemed potential usefulness.
Also number of comments per sample is an interesting measure.
But why should users be rated in the first place? ... Rating sounds is a completely different story because that's useful, informative and all... but what's the point in rating *users*??? We are talking about people you know, they have feelings, they have face, they can go jealous, angry, happy... I do not endorse any measure of the 'quality' of the components in a community made of persons, as it looks terribly undemocratic to me.
It's not worth to spend a minute in developping a complex algorithm combining time+sounds+whatever to achieve a useless (and unpleasant from a philosophycal stand point) goal. I have thought this way ever since I first encountered FS, now that I'm on top can tell without anyone thinking I'm envious. So, my proposal is simple: drop the 'Most whatever freesounder' thing
Disclaimer: You may think I'm going too serious about an unimportant subject, but that's because I don't have good control of mood when writing in English. So, I do not intend to be sour or uncongenial... but I'm not joking either, I really would like this feature to be dropped from the site. And by the way, the only reason that I contribute to FS is learning English, I'm not at all interest in sound
Well said Sir! Moat applaudable.
I suppose there is a fine line between rating sounds, and rating individuals. After all it is individuals that conceive, develop, refine and upload sounds to FS. I believe, J, that you like to get comments, votes and high down-load counts for your contributions. And when you do, then you yourself are being indirectly rated.
You may not have a competitive streak. I confess to being inherently competitive. It came down through the generations on my mother's side of the family. I was brought up to always strive to be the best in any field of activity I engage in. And, I think, if I did not have that driving force within me, the quality of my contributions to FS would suffer.
But Bram has declared his intention in the past, to avoid the "I'm the best around here" syndrome, so I think we are safe from a more complex appraisal of users.
And I do NOT see the current "most active" table as being in any way related to quality or skill. It's just interesting / amusing. Nothing that I can see to get steamed up about. You had been climbing up the old active users list at a fair rate of knots anyhow!
When I first saw this new table with "number of minutes" my first thought was that it measured how long I had spent browsing FS during the last 24 hours! It's probably about that figure!
Peace and good vibes,
Mike
perhaps dobroide is right and we don't want this...
perhaps we should rather have a "random set of users you might enjoy" or something on the front page?
but then again he's VERY wrong about his english.
dob: from ALL the spanish speakers I know your (written) english is BY FAR the best I've ever seen.

Thanks for comments,
me too that"s not really important to be the first or the last,
we contribute to freesound like we would,
but it"s funny to see who is the best reference or the best implicated,
for new members that just give an reference to how do the samples, what sample people loves, etc....
So, I work on that to make an better concept and more justice,
but remember that when we evaluate members there is only one winner and others are loser,
that"s stupid mathematic...
now the new formulas:
Time score (Ts), for how long the user has been on freesound, for instance:
Ts = int( 500 * ( 1 - exp( -D / 146) ) ); /* where "D" is the number of days */
in that formula if you do an graphic you will see that when D > 730days (two years),
Ts is stable around 500 points and thats the maximum,
so if you was member for 2 or 3 or 5 years that"s the same score around 499 or 500 point.
Vote score (Vs), the bonus for the number of vote for samples, for instance:
Vs = V ; /* where "V" is the number of votes */
Average score (As), the bonus for average of the vote for each samples, for instance:
As = int( 0.4 * A ); /* where "A" is the average of the vote for each samples*/
Uncompressed score (Us), the score for uncompressed samples, for instance
Us = int( ( 1 * exp( -Ut / 146) ) * Ut ) + int( 0,2 * Ut); /* where "Ut" is the total time for uncompressed samples in sec.*/
strange formula, do an graphic to see exactly what that"S do,
in some word, you can have around 235 points at around 127 sec. but after the score drop and at 638 sec. that restart to go up...
Compressed score (Cs), the score for compressed samples, for instance
Cs = int( 800 * ( 1 - exp( -Ct / 6600 ) ) ) + (200 * Fc);
/* where "Ct" is the total time for compressed samples in sec.*/
/* and "Fc" an binary value that is 1 if you have shared compressed sample (Ct>0) or 0 if not (Ct==0)*/
so if you have shared compressed samples you start with an bonus of 200 point and additionnnal points,
else Cs is zero...
Download score (Ds), the score for total count sample download by other members
Ds = int( 250 * ( 1 - exp( -Ud / 200 ) ) ) + int( 0.02 * Ud );
/* where "Ud" is the total count sample download by other members.*/
and the total Score, not perfect, for instance:
Ts = Ts + Vs + As + Us + Cs + Ds + ... ;
but if Bram can send me some some data, don"t need all members, or just say what parameters he have,
I can try to do better formula :wink: ...
Else
like Bram said
Just do something like sample of the day,
for instance "the member of the day"
so there is no competitions :wink:
This is just concept I propose but,
I think that we all prefer something with no competitions
So for instance, I think we are around 5000 active members (correct me if not right),
so remplace the colum with The 10 random Active members of the day,
and else to have one Random Samples of the day,
make something like The ten random samples of the day,
but from members that are not in the The 10 random Active members of the day...
5000 / 20 = 250 days to show all active members ...
That"S better :wink: ...
i personally think that the random sample on the front page is awesome. i've had sounds from that bit many a time. So get more randomness in i say!
Oh my (theory-of-evolution-by-darwin)!
I just saw a sheep say the word "yawn"!
That made my day
