My little lamb yawned because he was bored to sleep by the preceding post by HardPCM in which he described endless appraisal formulas. It was just unfortunate that a page change occurred, leaving the yawn somewhat isolated.
It's pink, and now it all makes sense...
s=yawn*m+xb/500
where s=something funny; m=sheep; x=cheese; and b=bobby pin.
I think I've run out of useful comments for this subjects so I leave.
HardPCMBut I prefer my second concept with The Ten Random Members Of The Day ,
what do you think of that?
good idea, could be named 24 h of Fame, Transient Vanity Hall or similar. I like it.
Personally I love the concept of random-picking sounds/users, as it reveals hidden treasures. Perhaps Bram could go on it and provide us with a new set of 3-4 contrasted sounds every day, high- vs low-pitched, synthetized vs real-world, etcetera.
Or maybe these sounds of the day could be extracted from a rule constructed with tags instead of at random (e.g, harsh-mellow, city-country...). But obviously I don't know if this could be implemented with ease or if at all possible...

...for instance that can be The Related Tags Of The Day
BUT there is more that 2000 tags I think (correct me if not exact),
so that can be implemented (I think that Bram is able to do that),
and 2000tags / 365days = 5.479 tags per day to show all the tags
...or for instance that can be The Ten Tags Of The Day
so 2000tags / 10tags per day = 200 days to show all the tags
Yaaaa!!! For me, the random sound of the day is kind of like an easter egg, you know? Like dobroide said, you often find really cool samples that you wouldn't look for otherwise.
HardPCM
and else to have one Random Samples of the day, make something like The ten random samples of the day,
Streety
i personally think that the random sample on the front page is awesome. i've had sounds from that bit many a time. So get more randomness in i say!

HardPCM - i think we got it! no need to post about 60 times about randomness
Some thoughts:
1. We should not have any kind of subjective list of the "best" freesounders as this is *impossible* to determine by a computer or a person. For instance, an EM composer might think Jovica is the best thing since sliced bread, whereas a filmmaker might hold Richard Humphries in much higher regard. Even someone who's only uploaded one sample might have uploaded something that is perfect for another person. So, no "subjective best list".
2. Most time, most sounds, most posts, most downloads, and highest rating are all real metrics. These metrics do not go away by ignoring them, and I think seeing your "rank" can help motivate you to upload more or participate more. However, there is no true metric for sample quality- ratings are closest but that can become more of a popularity thing. I think that we should have, at the least, lists of "uploaders by length" and "uploaders by # of samples" because this is interesting information. "Most downloaded" is good too. "Uploaders by rating" is problematic to me because if you take it as an aggregate of the rating and # of ratings, users such as RHumphries who have samples with tons of ratings will always stay at the top and get more ratings.
By having multiple "rankings", I think that the competitive spirit can be maintained (which is good for freesound- it means more and better samples!) but hopefully there will be less of a tendency to envy the "top" users because there are so many ways to break it down.
3. I also like the "interestingness" or "hotness" metric for samples, but I don't know exactly how it's calculated. This is used on sites like flickr and digg. I think it has to do with how much activity there is in the recent time frame- e.g. stories with a couple hundered diggs make the front page because all the diggs came in within the past day, whereas stories with thousands of diggs but posted last week "fade out". Perhaps this is done by displaying entries with the greatest % of change over time, or "accelleration" of the rating? In terms of physics, stories with thousands of diggs from last week have a very high "velocity/speed" but are not "accellerating" at all- they have topped out. This allows new, fresh stuff to surface.
