Whatever allegedly motivates freesound's login necessity, "bandwidth" etc., it is a creepy hassle and really ruins the site.

Currently I cannot d/l content, as the login screen does not return me to the clip page, and my login does not persist when surfing the site. I find a clip I want, but am no longer logged, when I log I lose the page, when I relocate the page I am no longer logged. Brilliant.

I have succesfully used the site in the past and think it is an awesome effort, but the login is childish, and I don't want a workaround. Just ace this foolish and terribly implemented logging nonsense.

Admittedly, I hate joining sites, hate logging in ever. So I'm a crank. But still, I like Freesound, I want to use the site for up and downloads. So I registered, some time ago, and went through the infuriating login runaround. Now, whatever has changed about the site protocols or my browser prefs, even the humiliating and insulting hassle of "logging in" gets me nowhere.

I guess it is saving freesound bandwidth, for sure, as the site is perfectly unusable.

Please! Let's grow up and not Googlize the place. Tear down the walls and make freesound really free.

logging in allows ppl to know who uploaded what samples (as if you ever would), who downloaded what samples, who posted on the forum, and what samples you downloaded. hey heres a freaking novel idea... since you are all about freesound and feel compelled to share your invaluable opinion with the community... how about contributing AT LEAST as much as you complain? :wink:

Is it really so disturbing? I log in many (many) times everyday, each time I must type username and passwd (as I don't want my browser to remember anything) yet never found it annoying, so... maybe it all depends on the point of view of the user (?)

not to sound TOO naive here, but is there really any danger from having your browser remember your login info for something as benign as freesound? It is a powerful tool, but it doesn't store any of my personal info...

it saves time to keep a high&constant level of alert regardless of the site, as you don't have to decide each time whether the page can be trusted or not. I consider the habit quite hygienic.
And besides, typing the passwd often helps to fight a lurking enemy, ever-present as you age... oblivion

However, agree with the original poster that I also do not like having so sign in to sites like this to get at the content. Nine times out of ten I just turn on my heel at the sight of a log in request.

The problem is I have far to many logins for far to many services and remembering the passwords for everything and anything can be a problem (unless you put the same username password for everything, which is obviously insecure).

I am a university lecturer and if I wanted to direct my students to this site in a short 50 min tutorial slot, having everyone register and log in can be a real burden.

Anyways well done, its a great service and about time someone did it properly. So thanks and well done. Also yes I will be contributing.

I think you should try to see it from a different perspective.

The login gives you access to a couple of tools, that you don't want to be without. Private messaging, so you can communicate with specific users, regarding anything.
Download logs, so you know exactly what you've fetched, and from who. So you can always go back and check what license the particular sound is under, not to mention who to attribute.
The message board would be flooded with anonymous users, if there were no logins, which would mean a great deal of confusion from time to time.

If you forget your pass, just check your mail.

I think a maximum of 60 seconds of your time, spent on registration, is a small price to pay, when it gives you access to well over 160000 sounds. Imagine how much time it would take, if you were to record foley, ambiance, field recordings or what ever flavor you are here for, your self.

It took me a while to realize the extreme usefulness of login requirement and download tracking on Freesound. People are able to start using Freesound right away and fix their mistake of not realizing that they are required to give attribution to most sounds later, because Freesound writes down who downloaded what.

I use this website every day.

The last time I logged in was about 6 months ago...
