Download problem

Firefox 3.0 final has a problem with the download link. When right clicking and selecting "save link as" it saves the home page html instead of the file. I had a problem with it on another site as well. Probably a bug. I was able to get the files with another browser.
If you continue to have this problem, I suggest trying to copy and paste the download link into the address bar. If you don't know how to do this, in Firefox you right click the download icon and click "Copy Link Location". When I do this, I am able to download the file as normal.

The other site works with your suggestion alone. On Freesound, I have to use your suggestion, and then right click on the page and select "save page as" in order to do the download. At that point it works like it always did.
So your suggestion resolved both issues.

with firefox, just left-click the download-button.
it actually works better.
if quicktime (or whatever) grabs it, just be patient while it loads, and then say "save as" in the "File" menu (or hit ctrl-s or apple-s depending if you're on pc or mac).

Well, Fedora 9 upgraded to Firefox 3.02 and now there is no way to download a file anymore in Firefox. I tried right clicking and using save link as, still gets the html. I tried just left clicking, and up comes an image that allows me to play, pause or stop, but no other option. I tried copy link location and it behaves like left click with the play, pause, stop graphic. In the end, I had to use seamonkey. It worked just fine with right click and save link as. Konqueror works just fine with right click and save link as also. I haven't tried it yet, but I would guess that Opera would also work just fine.
No such problems for me. I use internet explorer - it is far better in my opinion. However, you are all entitled to your opinion. All these websites that say
"We suggest you view this website using XXX," well, I think you should use the programme you want and that works best for you.

I have no Windows computers, haven't had for many years, so Internet Explorer is not an option. Well, I think I've read that it can run under Wine (the windows emulator for Linux), but I can't be bothered. And I value security over ease of use, so my scoring would probably be different than yours anyway. As you say, to each their own.
I don't know if it's the case here on freesound (seems unlikely), but many sites work with IE even though they are not w3c compliant, because Microsoft is so dominant in the PC space.
I'm guessing this is a configuration error on my part. I haven't gone to Firefox and checked for a bug report, or filed one. Perhaps I'll do that, but it isn't really urgent because I have a workaround. :wink:
In Safari, you should be able to right-click the "Download" image on the top right of the sample page (or ctrl-click), then from the menu select the option labelled something like "Save Linked File As..." (I don't know the exact wording, I use Dutch language). That should work.
I downloaded the latest firefox (3.0.5) source from the mozilla site, unpacked it, configured it, and compiled it. It still doesn't work to right click, but if I hold a shift key down and left click, it comes up with a dialog that allows me to download the file (or play it if I choose). Closer! It actually works to get the file directly.
I had a quick look at the source for 2.0.0.4 and 3.0.5, trying to find the difference that makes the difference and can't see anything. The function that does the download is almost identical, and reverting the changes has no effect. Firefox is a complex chunk of code and it is not easy to determine what is happening without really digging and getting familiar with program flow. The "save link target as..." command was dropped between the two versions and the code was eliminated. I think this was part of the refactoring between the versions.
Some progress anyway.
And yet another way that works for Firefox 3.0.5.
Install NoScript and turn off all scripting on the Freesound site.
Right click on the Download button. Select the Copy Link Location item.
Open a new tab, paste the address and hit enter.
A window will come up that is wanting to play, but blocked by NoScript.
Right click on the window and select Save Link As from the menu.
This will bring up a dialog allowing you to save the file.
I'm new at freesound and can't download samples, cause when I click on "downloading", its just running the sample. Can anybody help me???

What exactly have you tried and what was the result?
I can't help you on the Mac part of it as I don't run a Mac, but you should try different combinations of left and right clicks and modifying keys to see if one will work.
If all else fails, try a different browser.
Yes, you have to right-click the download button. If you have a 1-button mouse, ctrl-click is right-click.
Then choose something like "Save Target As..." and not "Save as...", because that will get you the image, not the sample.

Hello! New as of today but I am using a mac osx also (laptop with 1 key) I just figured it out!
Place your mouse over the download Icon on the top right, hold control button and click to reveal right click menu. Choose "download linked file as...". This should open it in your download window and when it finishes downloading you can double click to open it from there it should open directly into Itunes for you.
