The file in this link sounds weird the preview is normal though http://www.freesound.org/people/bulbastre/sounds/126885/
First is to check your sample rate you are working in is the same as the one of the file you downloaded,
This could cause playback speeds to be different leading to it sounding higher or lower pitched.
Next is bit depth.
And finally
Make sure your Audio equipment is all running in sync, eg, DAW @ 48K, Audio interface @48K etc.
If this doesn't help , give me a wee shout.
For most modern equipment, there shouldn't be a need to fidget with the sound output parameters.
In general, sound heard on preview tends to be a little more distorted (because freesound alters the sample rate in the preview, I believe). The downloaded sound should probably almost always be of higher quality.
