Forgive me if this is a duplicate request it bears some resemblance to this thread https://freesound.org/forum/bug-reports-errors-and-feature-requests/39898/
I am thinking of a use case for attaching files to uploaded sounds.
I have a number of sounds uploaded recently that were made with a program called vcv rack. I would like to be able to attach the patch that I used for each sound too (a small json file).
This could be a really cool way for others to modify the patch, make new recordings, and share the results.
Here is an example where the discussion could continue entirely on freesound rather than having to use another site to get the patch https://freesound.org/people/wjoojoo/sounds/436859/
What's wrong with using a file host and a link to that file in the description?
Being able to attach images via HTML is vastly different to allowing attachments of any filetype to sounds.
While a nice idea in concept, in practice the idea has a number of cons that heavily outweigh the pros (mostly for admin of the site), i'll spare you the boring list of specifics.
re: What's wrong with using a file host and a link to that file in the description?
Mostly just convenience for people wanting to share and download files.
It would be nice to not have to use another site.
It isn't hard for me to imagine that the implementation and maintenance cost of this feature could outweigh the benefits if it would only be a minority of freesounders who would use it.
If I was personally involved with this ^^ I would also push back
I might look at automating sound+patch upload using a combo of freesound + github gists.
You're right, it would be a minority of people using this feature which makes it unconvincing to implement, especially as there's a perfectly good method of including attachments without the necessity of uploading to the server directly.
Though, this is just my personal opinion and not indicative of the views of Freesound.
Hi wjoojoo,
I'm afraid I agree with Headphaze.
I visit freesound daily, but like the vast majority of members I'm only a light user. I understand what you're asking, but I like the current simple uncluttered format, and I trust the familiar file types currently used here are checked, harmless and trustworthy for download. External links on here that I sometimes follow I do so with caution.
I think the basic simplicity of freesound is the reason for it's success. It had it's fair share of spam some days, but is not an obvious outlet to attract pushers of malware. I think allowing unfamiliar(to many) formats on the servers might require extra filtering and checking.

(edit) I hope you find a nice semi/automated solution for what your trying to do. If you succeed post info here that might help others.
