I've been noticing that a lot of my sound previews have a fairly obvious high pitching "jingling" type sound in them that isn't in the original files. Did the preview creation process change? It is particularly obvious in this sound I've uploaded: https://freesound.org/people/tim.kahn/sounds/502702/ but definitely is apparent in other similar sounds from myself and others. Is it the sonic content of the sound that makes this happen, as it isn't apparent in all previews.
I call it a 'cheep'. Sounds like a small bird is trapped in the soundwave
Is this a browser-based thing or a sample rate problem? I have a suspicion that 'cheep' only occurs in files with a 44k1 sample rate. Could be wrong.
Hi Tim
This sound you hear is artefacts introduced in the process of file transcoding into a "preview quality" streaming format.
So I can make an educated guess and say that yes, probably the original file format and frequency spectrum content does play a role in the presence of these artefacts. Exactly how, i'm not sure.
It's rather annoying admittedly

My Freesound #454806 has a 48k sample-rate FLAC, & 16 bit-depth
again it cheeps for me (@34 seconds) in Chrome, but not in FireFox on same machine.
This must be due to the default mp3 streaming decoder/software/versions used by the different browsers. Some(it seems) are not fully compatible with the LAME v??? encoder used by freesound.
I don't know how to change default streaming audio/decoder settings in browsers, but I imagine in Firefox it can be found and (maybe) modified in about.config or maybe about.Plugins. (I have the VLC Web Plugin v2.2.6.0 installed and enabled in Firefox v52.9.0 and have no problems. Zero experience with other browsers so no suggestions.)
A direct link to a preview sound mp3 can be copied from "Page Source View" and saved directly to ones computer (instead of streaming it). From there it can be played on any program, windows media player, VLC, mplayer classic, etc and I'm sure the differences will be clearly heard from the problematic streamed sounds.
I appreciate this rigmarole is not practical for every day use, but it might help people debug and find a solution. Don't think it can be blamed on freesound as the LAME encoder is pretty much an industry standard. I'm not a web-wizz-kid so I'm sure more competent freesounders can add to the technical discussion.

You're absolutely right! I downloaded the preview encoded mp3 file and played it using Quicktime 7's decoder and there were no artefacts.
I'm using Chrome as my browser for Freesound
That is strange, it is fine in other search engines, I wonder why Google does that now? I mean it's such a large search engine, you'd think it would cope with a sound preview file. It must be an update or something. Odd. I'll ask my bro, he works in radio so he might know, but I'm not a computer or sound aficionado.
I just do this to pass the time because I've got a spinal condition that prevents a lot of things so I gain some enjoyment and relaxation from making my little tunes.
I do love music. It's not like I'll ever be blinking Taylor Swift or anything.
I just stick a couple of things on here now and again and hope they do well. Mostly they don't. But, meh. Life innit. It is my little piece of happiness in this world where Law, art; for example the art of war, weapons, hatred, anger, racism, violence etc, and corrupted reason confound to destroy rational reason and nature. I know there must be war for there to be peace, but it's a shame that human reason doesn't yet have a way of doing things that don't involve the art of war. I've been reading too many books. That's from another Swift, via Neoplatonist Porphyry. I like all the ethics stuff. It feels good to know there are others and have been others in this sometimes horrible world that feel and felt the same way that I do at time. They just put their ideas across in far more articulate and intellectually thorough, thought provoking ways than I ever could. Although some of it's a bit dated, some of it actually makes sense in these current times. Anyway anyway....
