Sorry if this has been posted before. I haven't been able to get round' the UI here yet.
What is the basis for doing it this way? Is it an oversight or am I missing something? I understand storing the information in general, but I would like a way to hide that.
This is an old-school website. The only privacy is anonymity, and by coming forward, you've blown it. Now people will be sure to check out this thread (and your DL history) for decades to come.
(This is not an actual answer, but it IS what you need to think about.)
I was perfectly aware of that when posting this topic, and I myself have nothing in particular to hide. That's not the problem.
And your suggestion is to.. not come forward, but to stay in silence? Is that how you solve all your problems? Or should I say not solve your problems. How Orwellian. I don't think I even need to explain why that logic is horrible.
It's about time somebody asked.
No, my suggestion is to not worry about it. Your predisposition to assume things explains perfectly well why the original subject is a non-issue...
Your predisposition to assume things
I don't even know what you mean by that. What have I assumed? I have a belief, that this is a huge flaw within the website's design.
I don't worry for myself. I worry for other people, because I think most aren't even aware of this. The only mention of the feature is in a half-sentence in the Terms of Service nobody ever reads, and even that holds no real explanation. As if FreeSound being a "user community" inherently means having to give up your privacy.
How is that supposed to "develop this community", as the ToS says? If everyone was aware of this, I assure you a large chunk of people like myself will be instead forced to be as closed and anonymous as possible. Hell, I'm considering just leaving this place. Sounds to me like no real community at all, and something that would be fixed if it were at least optional.
Being old-school is no excuse either. I can name many old-school services that don't do this nonsense.
Yes, this is an issue for everyone. And frankly, fuck you for assuming me to be fueled by nothing but self-interest. Again with the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" garbage.
Hi midn.
There is no invasion of privacy here. I nor anyone else here can link "midn" to any real person unless you choose to publish your actual name, address or email address on this site. Many users do by the way. This is a public community where we mix and share. Perhaps you wear a balaclava and disguise your voice when you go to the Pub: Most people don't.
Besides, the availability of this info is very important, particularly when it comes to the tricky problem of copyright infringement. Many community members have been ACE DETECTIVES in helping to expose stolen sounds that appear elsewhere on the web presented as if they were the work and sole copyright of the thief. At the cost of undermining his privacy I will name one who comes to mind - https://freesound.org/people/Timbre/ . (He can sue me if he wishes, or make me edit his name into a string of ****s) He has exposed hundreds if not thousands of stolen sounds and the perpetrators along with the strong evidence from the published date stamps. (If you want an example read the comments on my https://freesound.org/people/strangely_gnarled/sounds/72208/ )
Freesound is probable the only site I use which doesn't gather information about me with cookies, 0x0 pixel trackers and obscure javascript code to monetize my info through third parties.
If you are still concerned you can always delete your account although I doubt you can find an alternative that truly will keep your personal info more private.
Have a really good 2023 midn
regards
Wibby.
