Yes AlienXXX and Klankbleed, I am out of my element, but loving it!! I have learned so much in the last few days. I have been wanting to do something like this for soooo looong. Glad I committed.
And AlienXXX it found I didn't have as much control as easily as I am use too!! That was the biggest stumbling block. But I figured out a way.
I am off to work and just finished the song and uploaded it to DB. I will have to post the files later because I forgot out of the ones I dl'd which ones I used for what!!
All I used was Z3TA 2+, Dimension Pro, and Session Drummer 3. All the samples I used were from FreeSound. And none of the samples were samples of any instruments. All samples were of natural sounds!!
Hey Grem!
Great to see you made it to the party!
I am the last one to post (and in my own dare). How embarassing!
I hope I will make up for it with a half decent composition.
The lack of control thing is mostly to do with the fact that you are out of your element and lack experience/practice.
It will get a lot easier and you will find soon that you get used to doing with samples a lot of things that you would not think of when working with real or virtual instruments.
Anyway... guys and girls... Be warned:
I will be closing the dare around this time tomorrow... around 23:00 GMT time.
Dear participants,
Submissions are now closed.
I think we are still to few to run a vote (but I can be persuaded otherwise, if you think we should have a vote anyway).
Please feel free to post reviews of other participant's pieces. I always find that very interesting and am certainly looking forward to your comments and critique.
Also any comments about the running of the dare itself are most welcome.
(and yes, I promise to be more organized next time... I will see if I can get my entry a bit earlier than 2 minutes before closing the submissions thread)
say....
What happened to toiltrolltube's entry? It seems to have disappeared.
My reviews:
Thatjeffcater: I love this. Very calming and relaxing. Listened to this more than once. The harmony in this was impeccable with not a dissonant sound that I heard. Very beautiful work!
Klankbeeld: I had to listen real close and several times to hear how complex it was! Or at least it sounds very complex. Those voices going on are very confusing but rhythmic at the same time!! Very nice work.
AlienXXX: Very creative! The sounds you have going develop very smooth. I had multiple listens before I was able to pick out where one sound started and where it ended and another began! One of your better pieces!! Another fine job!

Hmmm... Yes...
Well he must have removed it.
Maybe for some reason he thought he would not be able to join in for the voting stage and so withdrew his entry. What a shame! I will PM him to try to find out.
Dear All,
Here is my list of samples and a deserved tribute to all those who uploaded them (and therefore made my work possible).
Please do not feel compelled to post your lists in a simiar format. This is just something that I felt like doing
May or may not do it again next time... Next time, though, I should really add my list of samples next to my Dare entry (this time I will edit my post to sneak it in... shhhhh....)
Samples used in my entry:
127710 Trombone Drone.wav by thatjeffcarter
Trombone drone. This is the drone heard throughout the second part of the piece. I have only used a section of the original sound and I cross-faded several instances of this over each other to extend the sound to fit my needs.
I have also used a sequenced filter effect (actually it was automation, but the effect is the same) to add variation to some parts.
I had decided early on to add this sound to my composition, as I needed a drone sound and this was just the ticket: I wanted something that sounded "organic" rather than "synthetic". I love the fact that this is a trombone sound. I would have never thought of using a trombone sound in my tracks. But then again, I would never thought a trombone could ever sound like this. An excellent sound. I am sure I will use it again.
128025 Igor- I wan't dinner.wav by be-steele
One of various dog sounds uploaded by be-steele.
These sounds were a key inspirational element to the creation of this track. Long before the track was even started I had decided to use samples from this pack to create a sort of scary monster sound.
In the end I rushed through only some of the samples in the pack. If I had listenned to all carefully I might have picked even better sounds that the ones I did use. - always in a rush to meet the deadline
I took clips from this sample and then stretched the sounds for extra creepy effect.
128712 Rainy City.wav by ecfike
128707 Rain on Car Windshield.wav by ecfike
The introduction of sample 128712 into the piece was a fairly late decision. I needed an ambient sample to set the scene for the start of the piece. I tried crickets but it was just wrong. I was thinking maybe wind or storm sounds when I came accross this sample and it was perfect.
As for 128707 I was not planning to include it at all, I downloaded it because it was a nice sound, but was not planning to use it at all in the piece. But then, after some low pass filtering it came in just perfect for the "sound of rain on the windows once you are inside" effect. Nice !
128896 Sentence Recitation.wav joshenanigans
Also trying to set the scene I needed something else.
I remembered this sample which I heard sometime back and went looking for it.
The voice tone is pretty neutral in the original recording, so it took a fair amount of processing to turn it into something more mysterious and surreal...
129008 1-Celtic Harp.wav by Fantom57
I needed some dreamy sounds in the initial part of the piece. Wanted to grab the listenner's attention with a little mellody. Something not to complicated. I also wanted a slightly unnusual sound... sort of piano but not piano... Had some synth or electric piano samples that I auditioned... but again I needed something more organic... a real accoustic instrument.
Again, Freesound provided just the thing: loaded the sound into a sampler and presto!
128975 B8 Dubstep Wobbly Bass9 by Ongitak
I needed a throbbing bass sound to create an effect of tension as the track developed.
Snippets from this sample proved to be just the type of sound I was looking for!
129334 Abbey Walk 1.aif
129335 Stairs Walk 1.aif
129424 Lock 3.aif
129425 Lock 2.aif
by le_abbaye_Noirlac
A fantastic set of samples in this pack.
Again, I had decided early on to use these sounds in the composition. It was a matter of scanning up and down the files looking for the best sounds to use for each occasion. These samples provided the steps, door and creak sounds.
For some of the extra heavy door slams two sounds were layered for extra oomph.
Dear Friends,
I proposed that we did not have a vote, since there are too few entries in this dare.
I have participated in other forum music contests where it is costumary to post reviews. I think that is a great idea. Although I like to receive votes (who doesn't ?) I find that the reviews and related discussions are more interesting and oftem more useful than the number of votes one gets.
I stress that the reviews are completely voluntary. You do not need to post them if you don't want to.
Here are mine:
OctoberDarefinal by thatjeffcarter
A very calming ambient piece. Nice to listen to.
This is even past "ambient", this is "meditation music"
There is a slight waving motion to it, as the sound volume grows and subsides throughout the piece.
This piece really is to my liking. I had many tapes of similar music, recorded many years ago from a radio program back in portugal.
All sounds used comply with the rules of the dare
------
bits and bites by klankbeeld
I like the start! "Welcome to Freesound 2!", spoken by Bram himself - What a great choice of sample!.
This piece makes me smile. It is pure wierdness (in a good way) love the bird and bubbling sounds that pop out.
There is quite a lot happening there but the vocal samples, especially the "0 1 1 0..." keep a sense of rhythm throughout. Althought there are some sort of drumbox drums playing, I think it is mostly the voice samples that mark the rhythm. At least that is how I perceive it when I listen to the piece.
The piece finishes in the same light mood way as it starts and the ending makes me smile once more.
All sounds used comply with the rules of the dare.
klankbeeld choice of sounds, actually, deserves a special mention.
In addition to the "Welcome to Freesound 2" sample I mentioned above...
Sample "Nightingale4fs2.wav " from juskiddink
Is nightingale the new freesound? Another great choice of sample in the spirit of the current dare theme!
For anyone who did not know... at some point there was a discussion abut what to call Freesound 2... People threw in a few names and the one that seemed the most likely candidate at one point was "Nightingale", because the most downloaded sample of Freesound was a nightingale sound.

Off in the Distance by Gremsongs
My friend Gremsongs is miles away from his usual path with this song!
A well balanced composition, the thunder sounds comming in just on queue with the rhythm - Nice !
Very modern sound and slightly on the creepy side. Well, perhaps not creepy as such, but certainly loaded with tension... perhaps even the right word is loaded with "electricity"with all that thunder and the fizzy sounds at the start.
On the compliance with rules side did not do that well, but we knew that and promised to be lenient
There are only 8 sample listed rather than 10 and most do not comply with the rules. The piece is also a bit short.
But hey, my friend Grem is new both at Freesound and at using samples in his music. So, all in all, a great piece.
Now, Grem and me had absolutely no interaction/discussion about our submissions before they were posted. Yet, we both went for spooky sounding and we both start and end our music with rain!... How spooky is that !!!
it makes me a little sad that toilettuberoll has removed his piece as it is my favorite (if we were voting...)
Particularly I like the way that the clunking chimes and the dissonant hum established a sort of nervous calm and then at 2:15 mark there's a sudden piercing shift. The calm is gone
It was very cool. If you didn't get a chance to download it before TTR took it down, you've really missed something.
I also like the way that Alienxxx used my trombone sound in his work. Though, I should say, the first couple of times I listened to it, I didn't even recognize it as mine. I kept thinking to myself, "I've used that same sound somewhere... but where?"
Hey Hey - we're in luck.
TTRoll's piece is still available at the Internet Archive -
http://www.archive.org/details/PianoThings
Yes I noticed the rain sounds were used in yours too!! Also klankbeeld used rain too. Thanks for being so kind!!
What you do hear is the thunder sample that atarts it off. Then I have a camera clicking sound that is morphed with Dimension Pro. Next sound is the fire crackling sample (the fizzy sound) morphed with just fx's. Then I have a computer keyboard sound for a hihat with a footstep on wood for the kick (sounds like a heart beating, low but it's there). Then the Z3TA sounds start. I took different samples and loaded them into Z3TA and made the lead sounds your hear. I have a high and a low in there to give it more fullness. But exactly which one of the samples is used in the Z3ta sounds, I am not sure!!

Fantastic news!
Downloading now. I will add it to my reviews, then.
Thanks, thatjeffcarter!

There is a lot to be said about this trombone sample, actually.
As far as I am concerned it was the most influential sample I have heard in a long time. Two months ago I would have thought a trombone was a bit boring... something I would never use in my music. I mean, I would not even know how to use it (I mean samples, not actually playing one!), even if I wanted to.
Then I listenned to that sample and I went "Wow!". Immediately made a note to use it somewhere. And as I was soon after that thinking about the dare it just fitted in wonderfully with what I was trying to do.
But really, more than that: a new universe of possibilities opened before me! Anything from a trombone to a tuba to a saxophone is now a potential source of interesting sounds that I want to process and explore!
That is why I love Freesound: every so often I find a sound here than just blows my mind.
As for the sample itself
(its here, by the way)
http://www.freesound.org/search/?q=127710
Ther eis quite a lot of sound variation in there, although it changes slowly and you almost don't notice it at first listen. That is why I only used a portion of it and repeated it a few times. This is a sound that I can still come back to and get different portions of for different effects. Awesome!
First I have thank AlienXXX fore the Dare 6. I never mada a composition but you put me on a new world. Thank you so mutch.
Than the dare's;
AlienXXX -> A dark, dark place.mp3
Nice story. I feel like walking in a dark cellar somewere down. Its not rain but water coming frome above into the sellar ore falling in the cave I'm standing in. You see I fly frome one place to the other. Whene I here this I see pictures that are huryfying me. Very well done.
thatjeffcarter -> October Dare - a Freesound Project
I come into a beautiful world near the coast in a forest. It's warm there and a lot of food. I'm allone but that is not a problem. Tonight I will fall asleep under the starts. Thankyou thatjeffcarter. Great work.
I follow your work for long now.
klankbeeld -> /bits-and-bytes
Why souldn't I say something about my own product.
I made it because freesound became freesound 2.0. AlienXXX you get it wright,. I have try to get everything in it, including discussions about the new freesound...
Gremsongs_ Off In The Distance.mp3
I'm glad that you gave it a try like me. I hope you had fun like me (see dissusion). It is beautiful and funky. I love it. When you make it a bit longer you could make it more a story. I think the 2 minutes minimum limit was more difficult than it looked. Soo that was my problem as well. I love the kind of plastic flute at the end. Let's wait fore the dare 7 and 'we newbees' try again...... Thank you.
toiletrolltube -> piano things
Man, man what a lovely work. Maby you don't know but I love to record a lot in a industrial invironment. This is realy great to hear. I did not look at the files you have used, but this is the world I see in your work. Close to the river is an empty stone factory. the roof is partly gone, and when it is storming I fantasize these music. Thanks for this..
Whell boys and girls
Thanks for th1s dare. Even our group was small (5 dare's) it made me feel good.
And to those who did not participate; Try it and feel the fun next time...
thank you all.
Hello everyone
I still need to post my revirew of TTRoll's piece.
Slightly off topic...
As we are not running a vote for this dare, I should be posting the next one in a couple of days or so.
I have a few ideas, some are more straightforward and some are more "challenging" - although thye should all be fun
Do you guys prefer a straightforward dare or a more challenging one ?
