DARE 7 - The hunt for 'naughty' samples !
Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.
Threads:
This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There will be a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
If appropriate, a thread will be setup for VOTING, once the submissions are closed.
When voting closes, a RESULTS thread will be created.
----------------------------------------
GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder. Limmited to one entry per participant.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a brief description of your work, a link to the submission file (mp3 or ogg) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound.
2.3 - Unless specifically stated in the THEME rules, you cannot use your own Freesound samples.
2.4 - Collaboration entries are accepted, but you still can only entry one piece.
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE. The voting will be open for 1 week.
3.1 - All entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself. This means your own single entry or a collaboration entry that you are part of.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 10 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 10 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare I will post the voting rules on the voting thread.
-----------------------------------------
THEME
This dare's theme is "The hunt for 'naughty' samples".
Lets continue to celebrate Freesound. This time we celebrate Freesound's humanity.
As humans we make mistakes and we learn from our mistakes. Freesound rules say that music samples should not be uploaded to the database, but some got through. The reason why this samples made it is now irrelevant, and for some there seems to be a good reason why they would have been allowed in.
In any case, your task will be to find one of those samples and turn it into something irrecognizeable.
These are the THEME RULES:
1.1 - Your composition must be between 2 and 4 minutes long
1.2 - It must use one music sample from Freesound (a naughty sample)
1.3 - You should completely transform your naughty sample into something very different.
1.4 - You can use other sounds too, but they must come from Freesound as well.
2 - You are allowed to process the sounds using whatever effects you want.
You should mention what processing you have used when you post your entry. For example "used EQ, a flanger VST, stretching and reverb".
3 - Entry format
Your entry must take the form of a musical piece.
You must encode your entry in a compressed format (mp3 or ogg).
4 - Submitting an entry
4.1 - Remember: Freesound is for sounds, not music. So do not upload your entry to Freesound! ~~~ You don't want your sample to be a naughty sample do yu !
Instead upload to Soundcloud - www.soundcloud.com
or to a public folder in Dropbox - www.dropbox.com
or to CCMixter - www.ccmixter.org
4.2 - Your entry must be downloadable as an mp3.
4.3 - Post in this forum with a description of your work, link to the file and the attribution list of samples used (see next point)
5 - Attribution
This is VERY important. Not only it adheres to the Freesound policy (give attribution to the files you use) but also it is a requirement so that I can verify the samples you used adhere to the rules.
If you do not post with attribution list your entry will be desqualified.
This is how you should list attributions:
Freesound sample #, sample name (optional) by username.
6 - DEADLINE
Submissions will close on the 20th November 2011
7 - This step is optional
As soon as you select your naughty sample you can post your selection on this thread.
The judge (yep, that is me ), will pick the naughtiest sample - and if you have been the first to select that as the basis for the track you will get a SPECIAL MENTION.
Good luck !
For any questions, please use the DISCUSSION thread.
Thank you.

Well guys and girls. I hope that I can inspire you with my composition:

Thanks AlienXXX this was a nice dare .... Dark horror prayer deep under the ground in a large cave.
Made fore dare 7 in the freesound.org community http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/17370/?page=1#post42816
The base of the dare should be a naughty sample, what means that the file should not be on freesound because it is to much a song. I picked a beautiful resend song of two Spanish man and rebuild it to a dark event.
Used: sounds:
20111015_duo.singing.wav , http://www.freesound.org/people/dobroide/sounds/132077/ ,
user dobroide
Effects: stretched, reverse, EQ, reverb, more tonal
Windheulen.mp3 , http://www.freesound.org/people/hintringer/sounds/82558/ , hintringer
No effects.
Thanks to freesound.org and users dobroide and hintringer.
I'm not sure I'd call them 'naughty'... but some of these longer, more complete music pieces are available at the freesound project.
Either way. I chose
http://www.freesound.org/people/frederic.font/sounds/130879/#
for my submission.
I sampled slivers of it to play through a MIDI keyboard, as well as looping, twisting, and subjecting it to various reverberations. I used Ableton Live (lite) and Adobe Soundbooth.
My song - Once More and Again - is available here:http://thatjeffcarterwashere.blogspot.com/2011/10/once-more-and-again.html
http://soundcloud.com/kyster/ghana-dare-7-on-freesound-org
I hope i don't break any rules
I used http://www.freesound.org/people/suonho/sounds/59253/ for the beat, no editing.
http://www.freesound.org/people/plagasul/sounds/1275/ for chords. I split it up into four, to get the different chords.
http://www.freesound.org/people/natmoon/sounds/8117/ for background noise, no editing.
http://www.freesound.org/people/klankbeeld/sounds/117599/ for the vocals. Split up, adjusted tempo, pitched, added reverb, and one clip added chorus.
All editing was made in audacity, and mixing in jokosher.
Guys all of these are amazing!
Alien: NICE dare!
Klankbeeld: whooooa, nice! I would categorize that under illbient - the darker cousin of ambient
thatjeffcarter: very magical sound. sounds a bit like a soundtrack of a nat. geographic documentary
Kyster: sounds a bit like Nicolas Jaar, and that's a compliment
Keep it up guys!!!!!!!!

Hey thanks for the Nicolas Jaar reference. Just been listening for a while, and i kinda like it
The blog would be a nice touch ,just to get more people to join in on the fun.

Oh and... maybe you should all try to attract some more people to the dares? Should I post a blog post?- bram
That should be very nice Bram. And thanks for the compliment.

Yes, of course, if you feel like it I would be very gratefull
I will put a post at the Kvr Samples forum... You never know...
Well this is my submission! I call it: In The Thick Of IT
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1660053/In%20The%20Thick%20Of%20It.mp3
Here is the list of samples used:
59542__robinhood76__00298-old-women-village-choir-folk-1
http://www.freesound.org/people/Robinhood76/sounds/59542/
42953__freqman__gypsy-violin-variation.wav
http://www.freesound.org/people/FreqMan/sounds/42953/
45613__flick3r__medievel
http://www.freesound.org/people/Flick3r/sounds/45613/
48488__flick3r__phat
http://www.freesound.org/people/Flick3r/sounds/48488/
49383__flick3r__moogley
http://www.freesound.org/people/Flick3r/sounds/49383/
My chosen "Naughty" sample is the sample from Robinhood76 - Old Women Village Choir Folk song.
It is also the sample that I mangled the most! I have it running through Perfect Space (convolution reverb vst, lite version of Voxengo's "Pristine Space") with a "reversed reverb" and that feeds into a Melda ringmodulator vst and then that goes into the Vintage 64 channel strip vst.
Some of the samples may not be recognizable because I sliced and diced them as I needed. Like Flick3r's "Moogley" sample I only used about a second of it. And his "Phat" sample I did some processing on it too!!
But Flick3r's "Medievel" sample and Freqman's "Gypsy Violin", I used those in their entirety. But I did process both with a lot of comps, eq, and verb!!
For the mix down all I used was a linear compressor that comes with Sonar X1.
Oh and I forgot, you can hear the Women Choir at the very end in their natural state. Well I did add some delay and reverb, but that's them!!
I really enjoyed this!! I hope others do as well!!
Hello all, this is my first attempt at something like this. so please forgive me if i broke any rules. (please feel free to tell me if i did ) I've been a long time listener on freesound, but i haven't had luck with recording and uploading things, and i saw this and thought i'd give it a try.
Here's my completed song http://dl.dropbox.com/u/49554062/freesound%20dare%20nov2011.mp3
my "naughty" sample was a choral piece posted by dobroide http://www.freesound.org/people/dobroide/sounds/121110/ a 16th century spanish song
the hip hop drum beat by simon_lacelle http://www.freesound.org/people/Simon_Lacelle/sounds/40849/
memry melotron-R by patchen http://www.freesound.org/people/patchen/sounds/3436/
and lastly learnerlesschords by notofficial http://www.freesound.org/people/Notofficial/sounds/19385/
then i did some cutting, reversing, distortion, pitch shifting, tape echo, and a little phaser, all mixed in Reaper.
thanks for listening and i liked all of the ones posted above. Good job to all.

Hello Carrik_Caser
That's the spirit and great to have you onboard!
Just listened to your tune and I really like it. DId not have the time to listen and check the original samples, so I do not know ig you have broken any rules yet
I will be sure to check those later when I close the dare, but don't worry in any case.
Please note that all comments and discussion should be posted in the "DARE 7 - The hunt for 'naughty' samples ! - DISCUSSION" thread.
Please feel free to post reviews or comments of other people's entries.
Just wanted to aknowledge your entry here, as I assume you will be watching this thread. So I posted here. (And in doing so broke one of my own rules!)
Dear Freesounders
This time I kept it simple... minimalist, even... and quite experimental...
I just wanted something simple. I picked my naughty sample early on... And I only used one!
http://www.freesound.org/people/FreqMan/sounds/25481/
I thought I knew what I wanted to do with it... but got a bit stuck. Planned to use some sort of rhythmic sample slicing / gating, and some sort of sound to midi conversion. When I finally got to it, the sound to midi conversion did not work very well... (shit happens, especially when you try new stuff). So I decided to carry on with the rhythmic gating only (added some distortion to some of the slices, a bit of EQ... shuffled some of the slices out of place, etc).
... That is until I got bored and decided step out of the gating thing and stick some drone/long chords in there too - Of course the drones also came from the same sample.
Here's my entry.
