Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.
Threads:
This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There will be a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
If appropriate, a thread will be setup for VOTING, once the submissions are closed.
When voting closes, a RESULTS thread will be created.
----------------------------------------
GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder. Limmited to one entry per participant.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a brief description of your work, a link to the submission file (mp3 or ogg) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound.
2.3 - Unless specifically stated in the THEME rules, you cannot use your own Freesound samples.
2.4 - Collaboration entries are accepted, but you still can only enter one piece.
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE. The voting will be open for 1 week.
3.1 - If there is a vote, all entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself. This means your own single entry or a collaboration entry that you are part of.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 10 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 10 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare I will post the voting rules on the voting thread.
-----------------------------------------
THEME
This dare's theme is "10 random samples".
Lets continue to celebrate Freesound. In particular I want to celebrate a feature of Freesound that has given me many interesting sounds, or sometimes caused me to search or find interesting sounds.
That feature is the "sound of the day"
I had a different idea for the December dare, but StormWingDelta posted a suggestion to use 10 random sounds
http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/17482/
...I could not resist turning that into my dare
These are the THEME RULES:
1.1 - Your composition must be between 2 and 4 minutes long
1.2 - You are ONLY allowed to use 10 samples: the 10 random "samples of the day" for the next 10 days, starting today 25th November 2011. You MUST use all of the 10 samples (or portions of these samples).
1.3 - I will post links to each "sample of the day" at the end of this thread. So you got all the samples accessible here on this page.
1.4 - Sorry, you cannot use ANY other sounds or instruments.
1.5 - You are allowed to transform the samples using whatever effects or other means at your disposal.
2 - You should mention how you have used the samples and what processing you have used. For example "cut the drum hits from sample X and Y and used them to create the rhythm. Used sample Z through reverb to create a drone sound..." etc.
3 - Entry format
As I don't know what the samples will be I will be very open in regards to entry format: Your entry can take the form of a musical piece or could just be a creative sound collage/mangling.
You must encode your entry in a compressed format (mp3 or ogg).
4 - Submitting an entry
4.1 - Remember: Freesound is for sounds, not music.
Upload to Soundcloud - www.soundcloud.com
or to a public folder in Dropbox - www.dropbox.com
or to CCMixter - www.ccmixter.org
4.2 - Your entry must be downloadable as an mp3.
4.3 - Post in this forum with a description of your work, link to the file and the attribution list of samples used (see next point). As we will all be using the same samples, you can simply say that you have used the samples listed at the start of the thread
5 - Attribution
See 4.3 above
6 - DEADLINE
Submissions will close on the 20th December 2011
Good luck !
For any questions, please use the DISCUSSION thread.
Thank you.
--------------------------------------------------
NOTE: the full set of 10 samples required for the dare will only be complete on 4th December 2011

Have fun.

Becoming a boeddha is painful. That is what I have made by dare 8 on www.freesound.org
The base of the dare are 10 specified samples. The only thing I did was making a composition. No effects are used.
Used: soundsnot listed here because the syste said it was spamm
I thanks all the users: kosten, Jovica, CyberialLainKittyCat, denalwa, grosgraingrass, domrodrig, theta4, NoiseCollector, morewavesand batchku. A special thanks to user Alianxxx and www.freesound.org for making this dare possible...
Succes for the rest
I may not be as quick as Klankbeeld, but mine is also done:
http://thatjeffcarterwashere.blogspot.com/2011/12/december-dare-freesound-challenge.html
A brief description of what I did to the sounds is included at the link.

Im the type of person who just likes to find ways to make a sound sound like a new sound twice over... but this challenged killed me! My cpu is not mine so the tools weren't great but did do :]
http://soundcloud.com/romel105/dare-1-1#
HARD KICK PART-I
1) Cloned it to make KICK A and KICK B, both under compression
2) KICK A was stretched and cut then pressed with the pogo to create a knee
3) KICK B was also stretched and cut, pitching low for a 'bass drum'
4) Then KICK A + KICK B made the slightly floppy new KICK C.
HARD KICK PART-II
1) Cloned it to make SCRAPE A and SCRAPE B used to resemble a form of hi hat and semi-snare
2) FIRST KICK is stretched and cut from the IN and OUT and re-pitched thus forming SCRAPE A
3) SECOND KICK is too stretched and cut from the IN and OUT and re-pitched thus forming SCRAPE B
STEAM PIPE
1) Cloned into two, both under seperate "reeverbration"
2) STEAM PIPE A was chopped, pitched down, then sequenced to make that 'buzz' sound
3) STEAM PIPE B was pitched up and given instrumental properties to pose as the 'violin'
KITTY KAT
1) Chopped, filtered, and pitched down.
2) Fitted TWO different reeverb effects to wash and conceal cheesy choppy sound.
3) After previous editing, I selected the cut that made the slick cool 'vintage cowbell stab'
DENALWA HINGE
1) Simply cut and stretched by not so much having it sound almost the same.
2) Since no crashes are allowed the HINGED acted like one (so to speak).
RUNNING WATER
1) Pitched and cut for the intro just to fill in.
2) Cloned, pitched pretty high, and was given inst. properties for a hidden 'splash' in the track
BATCHKU MB
1) Stretched, cut, finished with re-pitching for a 'hat/shaker'
INSIDE ANOTHER TRASH...
1) Re-pitched for the 'clasp/snare' sound
3) Cloned, stretched, cut, then re-pitched for the tracks primary 'hi hat'
RADIO BLURB
1) Cut and reveerb with some little distortion by a chorus.
2) Manually panned so that the enhanced 'beep/whistle'can stand out a tad bit more than usual
MORE WAVES
1) Cloned, stretched, cut, then re-pitched to support other 'hi hats'
KOSDEN EH
1) No brainer... Automated to pitch downwards with delay effect to beef up the intro

Nice dare. It took me quite a while to figure out how to start, but it also gave me some more experience with the new (and some what unstable) versions of hydrogen and ardour.
Here's what i've done... roughly:
112583__kosden__e
Added to a drumkit in Hydrogen 0.9.5 and made into a beat.
6663__jovica__steampipe-7-darkpad-c2
Added reverb and tremolo.
60196__cyberialainkittykat__18
Ajusted tempo and tone.
57916__denalwa__hinge
Added reverb.
33331__grosgraingras__radio-blurb
Added reverb.
119099__domrodrig__running-water-babbling-1-2
Added reverb.
67291__theta4__hardkick2
Added to a drumkit in Hydrogen 0.9.5 and made into a beat.
126810__noisecollector__insideanothertrashcompact
Added to a drumkit in Hydrogen 0.9.5 and made into a beat.
31534__morewaves__cascade-of-the-ketagawa
Stretched, added reverb and rotary speaker effect.
10116__batchku__mb-mbbb-ha-in-out-028
Added to a drumkit in Hydrogen 0.9.5 and made into a beat.
is anyone else unable to get to Ultranova105's track? Has it been removed?

Nope, i have the same problem. Can't find it. And visiting his soundcloud account, shows that there's only one track uploaded, and it isn't the one involving freesound dares.

Hello first of all. Haven't used the Forum so far. I saw the dare on the main page and wanted to try my best.
Here is my go at it:
http://soundcloud.com/tarvolyth/freesound-dare-entry
Good luck to all contestants! I heard some interesting stuff already
__
Kosden - E:
Simply used in different pitches and added some chorus to it. Then some EQ and Stereo Widening for mixing and listening experience
Jovica - Steampipe:
In the beginning I simply let it play 1 time, then chopped out a part of the fading to make it the bass in the rest of the song. Also EQ for mixing.
CyberiaLainKittyKat - 18
This was hard to use. In the end I chopped it to add a little effect during the song. You will notice Nothing else for this one.
Denalwa - Hinge
Ran this through a free plugin called "dblue Glitch". Effects change in this sequence: short Retrigger and then Gating, then delay, Bit crusher, and finally Retrigger again.
Grosgraingras - radio blurb
sliced and then added heaps of reverb to add a screaming kind of sound in the distance using only 2 slices.
Domrodrig - Running water
First of all I raised the volume a lot, then sent it through a very hard noise gate. This sample creates the clicking sound you hear from the very start onwards. And also some low cut to declutter the Low end.
Theta4 - Hardkick
Used it one octave and a halfstep lower (with corresponding time stretch) as a kick throughout the song. Then some EQ to give it some punch.
Noise collector - trash compact
Tuned this one down, too. Used it as a Snare/Clap sound. Added high and low cut to get a good mix.
Morewaves - cascade of ketagawa
Simply cut out a 2 second part at random and made it an "semi-opened hi-hat" with a volume envelope. And some EQ to get a more metallic, brilliant sound.
Batchku - Ha
Simply used it as a drum in different pitches. When tuned low it creates a cool "monster breathing out" kind of sound I used towards the end. Nothing else used on this.
Finally I ran some Multiband compression and reverb over the whole thing to give it some thickness.
Hello tarrei
Just a quick post to aknowledge your submission, inn case you are watching this thread.
This thread is really reserved for entries to the dare only - all other discussions take place here:
http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/17492/
By the way...
Very brave of you to make your first forum post an entry to the dare!
I read thru the thread — well … skimmed, actually — and when I got to the end … suddenly …

I am very glad you think so. Here's my entry, this is my first post (after skulking about for months) and … I'll upload some sounds soon! (Hopefully.)

The freesound project is great! Keep up the amazing work, everybody!
I'm in too!
http://soundcloud.com/ho-scale-geek/freesound-dare-dec-2011
I used Audacity as a kind of virtual studio for everything. The recording took place on a CD RW on a harddisk recorder to have it in mp3 format.
I had a listen to all the samples and cut some of their beginnings or endings to prevent ticking sounds. Of several samples I used only parts, hope that's OK.
The samples:
112583__kosden__e
This is the "lead singer" of the song. I used only parts of this sample in the melody in order to
have short notes. I used the sample in its entirety when it sounds with lower pitch, like a kind of dinosaur. I changed the pitch all the times that it's used.
6663__jovica__steampipe-7-darkpad-c2
I cut away the very beginning, in order to have the low tone already in the beginning of the sample, it would sound more tight in the timing in the mix. Changed the pitch most of the times, alternating between 2 tracks when a new tone is sounding.
60196__cyberialainkittykat__18
Used some tones of it, very short bits in order not to have them bend too much. Used them in a rather different sequence when the disco beat is playing, right after the break. I changed the pitch of one of the bits that sounds like a 7th chord.
57916__denalwa__hinge
Changed the pitch, also halfway the sample, sometimes finetuning was necessary to fit it with the
musical key.
33331__grosgraingras__radio-blurb
Used a small part of that right after the break, when a low sinking tone is heard (the result of lowering the pitch).
A larger part has been used during the break, putting an echo over it several times.
119099__domrodrig__running-water-babbling-1-2
Took some drops from that, mostly outcroppings in the waves, compressed them, and in some cases reversed them. In all cases I changed the pitch.
I also used one of the drops as the base drum sound that sounds a bit like a rave drum (compressed, pitch changed, filtered).
And as a kind of second hihat. This very light sounding percussion has been panned a bit to the right and one is timed a bit later (halfway the other drops), that's panned to the left, in order to make the total of drops sound more spacy.
67291__theta4__hardkick2
Used it some times during the break and right after it.
126810__noisecollector__insideanothertrashcompact
Cut away half of it because it's clipping very much. The second half I used in a reversed manner, fit it into half a second by cutting the softest part of what was left.
31534__morewaves__cascade-of-the-ketagawa
Used it together with the radio blurb sample, right after the break.
10116__batchku__mb-mbbb-ha-in-out-028
Cut some part of it, short enough to a hihat. Filtered it until it had a kind of metallic sound in
between a hihat and a tambourine, and used that as such during several parts of the song. Reversed
and copy pasted in a long row.
For the recording I used a harddisk recorder, then put it as MP3 on a CD RW and voilà.
Thanks for this dare, it was very educative to me, I know MIDI but hardly ever worked with sound
editing samples. I'm actually pretty amazed what Audacity can do.
Thanks to the freesound users who provided the original samples to Freesound (their usernames are in the names of the samples).
Are submissions limited to "musical compositions" or can they also be sound environments / ambiences / a short sound design clip of a radio play?
Oh, I just re-read the rules, nevermind.
"1.4 - Sorry, you cannot use ANY other sounds or instruments."
Hello
In this case we are looking for 'musical' compositions, but we are open minded
If you woul like to try something non-musical and submit, that would be ok.
I think the most important is that you explain on your post what you were trying to achieve, so pthers can comment and give feedback. But please adhere to the rules on the samples to use and time limit.
Also, we try to reserve thid thread for the submissions only. For everything else use the 'discussion' thread.
