Jgeralyn, I'm in (I mean I would definitely post). LOL, though only thing: I don't think all the sounds were ugly. I liked many of the raw sounds!
Good work on the compositions, jgeralyn and klankbeeld!

It's weird to quote myself, but oh well. I have lots of energy at the moment so I couldn't wait for responses...

I created a dares group! Please join, share your tracks, even ones from past dares, and be sure to tag each piece with "freesound.org" when you are uploading to get this beloved site maximum exposure.

Thanks for creating the group at soundcloud. I am still very new there so never tried that functionality. Will join the group when i am back home tonight.

Right... another review... and a disclaimer!
Having just posted 3 reviews in rapid sucession i will now be working on my own submission.
So, if you post your track and don't get a review from me the following day that is not a bad sign. All it means is that I am working on my track. Your review will come
Now the review:
jgeralyn - Another Man's Treasure
An interesting track. I could tell by your posts that you immediately loved afleetingspeck's guitar samples that he submitted for the dare. I was pretty sure you would use them and I was wondering how.
The guitar sounds give it a South USA folk sound... perhaps even further south... Mexican!
But there is something alien and unsettling about the piece. A tension that floats in the hot air. You can't see it... but you can feel it!
There are deep bass sounds that appear, ressonate and disapear... and the sound stretching algorhythm (I guess that is what it is) which struggled with the transients i the samples and produced the long echoing metallic artifacts in the stretched sounds. I wonder how far you stretched them? 100x?...
And of course... the reversed sounds. There is always something unsettling about reversed sounds. It is just ... unnatural!
It all works very well. I particularly like that it sounds rhythmic and a-rhythmic at the same time.
I have added some timed comments on the Soundcloud track where I find the sounds really create the ambient effect. - That is easier and more useful than trying to explain it here.
Is there a story for this track?... Of course there is!
(and its a scary one)
The quiet town of Holly Sands, South USA right on the border with Mexico. A place where nothing ever happens is suddenly troubled by strange events.
Annoying, almost comical at first, but grew increasingly worrying... It all started on that wednesday morning when all red pens in the town had gone missing. They simply disapeared overnight! All the red pens! Including the ones in the shops.
Kids prank... surely.
Come to think of it, the whole week was strange... A feeling of electricity in the air. The sky looked strange like a thin high haze was filterint the sunlight.
Then on friday it was the cockroaches. The laudry in the mainstreet suffered a cockraoch infestation. The laundry of all places! Not a restaurant... the laundry! - They appeared suddenly and they were everywhere. Pooring out of the washing machines in their millions! People ran out to the street in panic. The police cordoned off the whole block.
The pest controllers arrived two hours later. They could not find a single cockroach!
Then there was the mysterious fires... the day when all phones stopped working... Strange sounds being picked up by car radios... And then the cattle mutilations!
People started to talk about a mysterious man. Tall, dark skinned, black hair. With a horseshoe shaped mustach and a scar above the left eye. He always whore a hat and never said a word.
He had moved in about 2 months before and lived in a caravan outside the town by the scrapyard.
He was know locally as "The Gypsy", and people starte recalling seeing him in places just before or just after some of the strange events.
One rainy night Jim Flanders, one of the local farmers, was at the bar and he had had a few too many. The Gypsy was sitting at a table in the darkest corner of the bar with his glass of whiskey.
Jim started accusing the Gypsy of mutilating two of his cows. Infuriated by the Gypsy's lack of reaction he went to his car and came back with a crowbar. The Gypsy pulled a knife... Only the quick reaction by some bystanders and the bartender, who restrained the two men, prevented things getting nasty.
Late that night there was a fire at Jim's house. Only his bed burned, and the next morning the coroner announced that Jim had 'spontaneously combusted'.
The people of Holly Sands had enough! Armed with shotguns, pitchforks and baseball bats, they made their way to the Gypsy's caravan. In its place they found only a circle of charred ground. The dirt and rock had been heated to the point of melting forming a glassed patch. A few meters: away the Gypsy's boots and gold tooth.

I finally managed to get some things straight with ardour this time. Using jack as what it was supposed to be. An audio connection kit. Being able to connect ardour with what ever piece of software i wanted to, was a minor breakthrough for me, and opened up for a lot of things, like the use of a sampler (specimen).
Doing these dares on freesound really gets me learning a lot. I remember that when i first registred here on freesound, i was in awe of those who literally dared to take part in these dares. It felt like a million years of experience with audio recording, experimenting and mixing was needed. I don't know why i took on the 7th dare, but it gave an opportunity to look into this world. After countless hours of staring with evil eyes at my screen, and even more hours thying to find exactly the software i wanted, i feel like i'm finally getting to learn about this world.
Now i almost cant resist to enter the dares. I know i'm going to use a lot of time on them, but i'm having a great time while i'm at it Should anyone here feel like almost entering a dare, but have a lot of doubt, just get going! The worst thing that could happen, is that you might go ahead and learn something
So join in people!!
And so rises an eerie silence over the dare community.
Slowly but steadily, each is developing that rhythm, that scene, that scape... to counter this silence. And the din that shall follow will be mighty deafening.
Just sayin'.

What's with all the spam on this forum? I can't find the part 2 post about the closing date for this. I'm still working on my piece. It got kind of ambitous and I've ended up with about an hour of music! I'm trying to edit it down into some kind of structure.

It's today, January 28th.
I hope you make it in time, i'm looking forward to hear it
The spam is running wild today, really not cool.
Here's a link to part 2:
just an idea for one of our future dares. We could each record a sequence (a story or the like) with foley effects. Every sound, beat, or music piece must be recorded and the only processing allowed would be eqing and noise filtering. The only editing allowed would be layering (say a beat/rhythm over a water boiling sequence, so this would clearly need to be more than one take since all we have is two hands). this would call for lots of creativity, especially coming up with these foley sounds. There can be a theme so that the voting is done in a comparable manner.
i think it'd be interesting.
regarding the current dare, i am at work, but as soon as i get home, i will do all the attributions on soundcloud.
Hi everyone
As you must have noticed, Freesound is suffering a spam flood at the moment.
It is being worked on...
Relating to your idea for future dares - I already have something planned for the Feb Dare (also based on a request).
All I can say is that it will be based on a minimalist concept... effects will be allowed but will be ... erm ... 'minimized'.
I will PM you to see if I understood well the concept you are proposing.
Now, on the SPAM problem...
I will be posting the voting thread soon. I will post a link on the other Dare 9 threads so that it is easily visible to all and does not get lost in the flood of SPAM (sigh!)

Couldn't we get someone to make these dare threads sticky, for the time period they have purpose?
Unfortunately I do not have the necessary powers to make these threads sticky.
The Freesound tech guys are currently very busy (spamm problem and other stuff they are working on too) so suspect they won't have the time.
I am posting a link to the voting thread here:
http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/24432/?page=1#post51752
Suggest you all subscribe to the voting threat, and other threads too (you will get an email when the threads are updated) so you don't miss anything.
Sorry about the spam.
