Dare 9 - a different perspective on Christmas - PART 2
Right... so we had fun collecting the samples so far...
Hopefully that made you think a bit and be creative about all the sounds that you can create with packaging that you would otherwise just be throwing away.
Equally, broken or dis-used objects can be great sources of sounds!
What next?
I have been listenning to what people have been saying they would like to see. So for this dare, you will be allowed to submit musical pieces or sound scenes, you will also be allowed to use other sounds in addition to the ones tagged as "dare-9". Read the rules for details.
I also want to encourage non-entrants to vote. So the number of posts or sounds required to vote are now lower. I am also thinking of advertising the voting in the Freesound blog, when it opens.

Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.

This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There is a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
I am hopping there will be enough submissions for voting. If so a VOTING thread will be created and then a RESULTS thread.

GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder. Limmited to one entry per participant.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a BRIEF description of your work, a link to the submission file (mp3 or ogg) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound.
2.3 - Unless specifically stated in the THEME rules, you cannot use your own Freesound samples.
2.4 - Collaboration entries are accepted, but you still can only enter one piece.
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE. The voting will be open for 1 week.
3.1 - If there is a vote, all entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself. This means your own single entry or a collaboration entry that you are part of.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 3 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 5 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare I will post the voting rules on the voting thread.

THEME
The theme is to use the 'unwanted' sounds of Christmas: the packaging that we throw away and old items that you are replacing. These sounds have been uploaded by various users and tagged with "dare-9"
These are the THEME RULES:
1.1 - Your composition must be between 2 and 4 minutes long
1.2 - You must use 10 samples tagged with "dare-9"
1.3 - You can use additional samples from Freesound, but these should be in a 'supporting' role the main samples for your piece should come from the "dare-9" set.
1.4 - You cannot use ANY of your samples, not even samples you submitted for dare-9.
2. - Entry format
2.1 - we will accept musical pieces and sound scenes.
2.2 - We would prefer compressed formats (mp3 or ogg) but wav format also accepted.
3. - Submitting an entry
3.1 - Remember: Freesound is for sounds, not music. So do NOT upload your entry to Freesound.

(If you do not have an account at Soundcloud, creating one is free and takes less than 1 minute.)
3.2 - Your entry must be downloadable.
3.3 - Post in this forum with a description of your work, and the attribution list of samples used.
4. - Attribution
It is very important to make sure you attribute all samples used. Not only this is required when using any samples from Freesound, it will also be important as part of the scoring at the end of the competition 
5 - Other information
A short description of what you have done to the samples and software used is useful but not absolutely required.
If you want to give more detail, please use the DISCUSSION thread, so we can keep this thread compact.
6 - DEADLINE
Submissions will close on the 28th January 2012.

I'm sorry that I couldn't contribute any recordings to the sound pool for this dare. I was either very busy or not home...

Made a composition with 17 dare-9 sounds. It was a lot of fun.
As usual for my compositions, there are now effects. Just leveling and cutting of some parts of the sounds.

On my way to work i was reading the latest posts, etc...
I saw Jeff's submission and i was goin to post to say "bet klankbeeld is not far behind..." but i got to the office and ran out of time... 4h later, i am already too late! No point predicting klankbeeld is gonna be next now, is it?

I used 11 dare-9 sounds (and no extra sounds) however the forum won't let me post the list of sounds because it think's I'm spamming 
...but the list is of course in the info on soundcloud so its all okay.
I spliced out minuscule pieces of some of the sounds, thinking that I would do a lot of repetition and evolving long tones, but instead created several 30ish second collages splicing three sounds together each time, the only processing used on these collages were time expansion, reversing the waveform, and some pretty heavy-handed reverb on the one with AlienXXX's bubble wrap sound. It all started to come together when I processed afleetingspeack's low-e sound with GRM's Fusion plug-in (this is the space-y sliding sound that goes through the whole piece) because I can't actually afford GRM tools, I have to bus this as a periodic effect. This set the tone and structure for the rest of the piece. I also used GRM Grinder and GRM Evolution on AlienXXX's box and pen sound. I layered small pieces of other sounds using the Fibonacci Sequence for timings to emphasize the periodic feel of the piece. I think that's all the proccessing I did, hurray for pretty sounds from "ugly" objects.

Everything is mixed in Ardour3 beta2. Sampling is done in Spacimen, through jack and plugged into ardour. Also all effects are added in ardour3 beta2.
I've been enjoying listening to the contributions so far! Some very inventive and creative use of the sounds. Who would have thought you could get so much music from such unlikely material?! I even recognised one of my own samples in one of the pieces! I should mention that they were cut up to be looped effectively and don't sound very interesting until they are. I have been busy playing around on my piece coming up with ideas. I've spent most of the time so far chopping up bits that I feel may be useful and cleaning them up in Audacity. I've noticed that a few of the sounds seem to be recorded in stereo even though they are actually mono. Just an observation. It's easy enough to convert to mono. I am making good use of those bottle blowing sounds, tuning them a bit to make a scale and putting them into Reason's NNXT sampler. I've also made a nice drum kit in Kong using milk bottle, banana box hits and lots of pecussive sounds from the wrench etc. Finding a bass has been the most challenging but I've found teh low E guitar sample usefull! It's unlikely I'll finish today and next week is busy for me but hopefully I'll have something before the deadline finishes!

Great you are having fun listening to other's entries and trying ideas for your own piece.
I am also very intrested that you use Reason - My first proper PC music program. I use it less these days, but maybe we should get together at some point and do a collaboration.
Anyway... we leave that for another day and another thread...
I am also going to ask that you use this thread for posting your entry only - for discussions, plesase use the discussion thread.
Not a hard rule (and I break it sometimes)... but just to keep this thread clean for submissions only as much as possible.

I tried to make a song, not a soundscape. It was made during a free morning I got and produced with Ableton Live, using mainly its internal samplers and effects. It’s kind of unfinished (shitty bass and things), but as I probably won’t have more time to improve it, I’ll leave it like this. The ONLY samples used are:

Since the original rules didn't mention which timezone, I'll assume that I'm allowed to interpret it as if a post within my timezone is still eligible.

I am GMT, so always assume times stated are GMT. But, for the future i will clarify that in the rules.
Normally i would be closing any threads (submissions, votes, etc) between 23:00 and 23:59 on the last day.
I might miss it occasionally, as i am only human and i have other responsibilities (family, work, etc).
But keep those times in mind to avoid disapointment

Right everyone...
... after an absolutely crazzy couple of weeks at work, I managed to finish my track.
I have completed all my chores, etc, etc... So now is time to come online and post it.
I have been meaning to do something completely abstract like this for sometime. It is much more along the lines of pieces like the ones from my friend klankbeeld. Still... i have not managed to go as minimalist and there are some effects used in the piece. But less thatn usual. I have restricted myself to reverb, delays and filters - with one exception of a sample where I used overdrive.
I did not use pitched samples at all. Did not tune any samples. And the whole piece is, essentially atonal. I did use sample stretching... but that is something I am planning to do away in one of my next pieces too.
Will post the list of samples later (on the soundcloud page). It is late now and I do not want to make mistakes
