Hello OSH37,
Sorry for my late reply - I am a bit behind the game this time
Just wanted to welcome you to the dare.
I see this is your first post too. So we have got another brave Freesounder who has jumped straight into a dare!
Please also join the Freesound Dares group at Soundcloud and share your track there.
jgeralyn created this group so we can keep all dare entries together in one place.
Voting will only start from 26th Feb onwards.
Until then feel free to listen to other people's entries and post your critique/comments on the "DISCUSSION" thread. You can also post your comments directly on their soundcloud pages.
If you are getting too impatient waiting for the voting, here is something else to keep you busy:
http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/32198/
Hey everyon this is my first time posting on the forum so hi everyone ! i haven't been using freesound for a while but i just found out about the dare community and thought it was a cool idea so here is my entry
http://soundcloud.com/saoesound/freesounds-dare-10-half-dozen
samples used :
http://www.freesound.org/people/skyumori/sounds/104528/ for bassdrum snare and click
http://www.freesound.org/people/Corsica_S/sounds/86633/ for the vocal sample and high hats
http://www.freesound.org/people/Jovica/sounds/102980/ for main riff
effects :
eq on door sample for bassdrum sound
eq on door sample for snare sound
i wanted to put a reverb on the vocal sample but forgot
all done on a korg microsampler then recorded on the pc wich explains the quality loss and the abscence of mix.

Hmm that's bad. That 1.2 edit wasn't there when i posted my dare
Guess i'm disqualified then! Bummer!

Hi Kyster, I did not change the rules. All edits were merely an attempt to explain better what was already there.
I guess there are a few entries which will have some issues. And I know tht the rules can be a bit complicated at times (but if it is very straightforward I am not sure it is as much fun).
We will for sure work it out during the vote without too much hassle. So, keep cool!

Hello soneproject !
Welcome to the dares!
I am sorry I missed your initial post. Normally I tick the box to subscribe to the thread and get an email when a new post is made. But looks like I forgot to do it on one of my posts. I always like to welcome new entrants
Very interesting that you are using a microsampler (i.e., outboard gear). I know some other people are using samplers too (but can't remember who).
I never got my hands on a hardware sampler, and with the sampling facilities available on today's computers and software, I probably never will.
But working with different gear and software DOES condition the way you work and you make different things. The music I make with different programs IS different, although it is not to do with the capabilities of these programs themselves, but with the way things are layed out, workflow, etc...
As for the "quality loss" you mentioned... stick around and I guarantee there will be a dare when that will work to your advantage!
AS I have said on some of the later posts. Don't agonize too much about the rules... it will all be fine!

I'm not saying you changed the rules. The 1.2 rule was there, but your Edit wasn't. This changes a lot.
Oh well, that's what happens.

I read the rule and the edit.
Although I did explain it is the text before, I agree with you that the rule without the edit was incomplete. It did not say you had to use all 6 slots, so you could go for 3 samples + 2 effects, for example.
If the rule was not clear it is nobody's fault but mine. Sorry about that.
I will make sure no one gets disqualified or penalized when it comes to voting. And thanks for pointing it out.
Slightly less than tomorrow
It's 26th, 14:12 right now here in Italy, and that's GMT+1, so 13:12 GMT
The first thing I would say is that I underestimated the difficulty of this dare!
I am really glad that I decided to run a minimalism "warm up" rather than something even more minimalist.
I will post some notes in the discussion thread about what this dare did for me.
Here i will just list the samples and effects used.
SAMPLES:
92871__jamalboi101__wonderful-world
(used for all the synth sounds)
104528__skyumori__door-close-sqeuak-02
(tiny slices USed for percussion sounds)
136532__arseniiv__triangle-140-bpm-003
(single hits cut out and used Used for percussion and also put through the granulation effect)
EFFECTS:
EQ (Used Reason's Mastering EQ)
- applied to individual samples to filter out high or low frequencies
- Used on one of the delay echoes to make for a different sound.
- Used as a master effect at the end of the track. Instead of a normal volume fade, EQ slowly removes the high frequencies.
Granulation (used KTGranulator by Koen Tanghe of Smartelectronix, http://koen.smartelectronix.com/KTGranulator/)
- Used on some sample slices to obtain different sounds from the originals.
Delay
- Used extensively throughout the track, applied the synth and drum sounds.
The sounds were cut up in Audacity, volumes adjusted and fade in/out applied when required.
Experimented with various sounds through a granulation effect (KTGranulator in Ableton Live), but I think I only ended up using it on one of the triangle sounds. This sound was re-sampled and then loaded into Reason.
All musical composition took place in Reason. Delay (echo) and EQ were applied at this stage, as appropriate.
You can find my entry here:

Well, here's mine anyway: http://soundcloud.com/puniho/mr-dwight-rides-again
I honestly don't mind if I don't qualify as I'm not particularly interested in any competitive aspect. I think the important thing is taking part in the spirit of the endeaver.
I used five samples:
136532__arseniiv__triangle-140-bpm-003
104528__skyumori__door-close-sqeuak-02 2
102980__jovica__layers-018-alchemic-hunting-88
26762__santuccie__belch1
86633__corsica-s__slow-down
I used Reason 5 and my one effect was a reverb as a send effect on the final mix. I am not happy with it as it stands, I did my usual trick of getting far too ambitous with multiple ideas and directions all over the place. I made it even harder for myself by deciding to use a 5/4 rhythm. This came about early on when I decided to use the belching sound. I made some beats with it that had a hicupping aspect and I felt that the whole piece could have that off kilter eccentric aspect. I began to get a picture of Dwight as one of those obnoxous and uncouth charactors, belching all the time and one or two beers short in the mental six-pack department. It became, I hope, a humerous piece with slightly darker sinister overtones.
I was quite surprised to get such a richness of sounds out of unlikely material without using effects. I made patches for Reason's NNXT sampler and looped small sections, then played around with the LFO's and what-have-you. I particularly liked the hunting alchemy sample, it has fragments of interesting and ghostly melody and one of the other directions I felt myself being drawn to was to make an ethereal and moody piece. But it seemed at odds with the Dwight charactorisation. I did eventually work it into the piece anyway and hopefully it conveys a sense of everything that Dwight is not. Dwight's long suffering girlfriend get's a little fragment of melody represented by the triangle bell which I had a bit of fun with, and I even gave Dwight a voice so he didn't have to belch quite so often..!
All in all, it was quite a fun project and I certainly learned a lot from it. I'm still trying to come to grips with using Reason software and I've just dicovered how to automate the mixer levels so the little slider thingies go up and down all on their own! lol I'm just beginning to realise that you can spend a lot of time at this!!
