...of course, given my luck, my favorites from existing filetypes (AIFF and MP3) would probs not end up getting the popular vote and I would still be sad about it all.
aiff actually stands for Audio Interchange File Format. It was developed by apple, but it was the "standard" audio format in amiga, too. (I confess I had to search for it, you made me doubt about it):

I had an amiga too. :_) 1Mb RAM and oktalyzer tracker. old school stuff!

Ahhh that would have been the C64 or (less likely) the C128.
The Amigas were the 'next generation'. They had 3.5'' floppy drives rather than cassettes. They were overal much more powwerfull too. In particular their sound capabilities were way ahead of the PCs of the time (which, as standard only had the ridiculous PC speaker...)
One of these days I need to get that Amiga out of the box and check if it still works!
Actually, guys, I even had a sampler that plugged into the Amiga and would digitalize (i.e., sample) stereo sounds. I think I even know where that bit of kit is!

Hi everybody,
Im almost ready to upload my piece to soundcloud, but I have one last question.
I am using a plugin called HARDCORE, its a sort of guitar effect with lots of pedal style effects.
The compressor is what Im using, and I turned all other effects off.
(there is a setting for cabinet style, think its some kind of reverb effect, TURNED OFF)
But there is also an EQ, that I didnt turn off.
Does this count as one or two effects??
There seems to be a difference in what kind of EQ your using if it will count as an effect or not and I dont really understand this....

Oke I threw out the compressor, didnt change the sound to much anyway.
So my only effect is an EQ.
Dang, escortmarius, that is some submission you have there. I love the flat-ended boom of the kick! But the whole thing has been so expertly crafted!
I just wanna ask, though, if you want to edit your submission, because it's over 4 minutes long and I don't want this submission to get into any trouble, because it is marvelous!!
jgeralyn: I believe somewhere in this discussion post AlienXXX mentioned that it wasn't the music piece that was supposed to be minimal but the tools and samples at our disposal that were minimal. Using those, we could have a little complex compositions. 
But I know what you are saying about the essence of a minimalistic dare, but I already think AlienXXX has planned a future dare with that in mind. From what I gathered in the rules, this is supposed to be a warm-up before we blantant-ly land into the minimalism. The piece I am going to submit is not minimalistic in that, so I hope I don't deject you (or Klankbeeld)!
afleetingspeck, I've always been more serious about warm-ups lol. But I totally agree about the piece, its jammin. Since I was in the middle of working out a structure for my own submission, my mind set when listening to anything the past couple of hours was "how do I make this minimal, and what IS minimal?" Since an answer was so obvious with ecortmarius' piece I just thought I'd throw it our there. It's a total habit from 4yrs of weekly critiques in all my classes. PLEASE, if ANYONE does not appreciate it (my suggestions for how what you have could be different to meet a very specific end) let me know in a PM and I will be sure to only comment on your piece as it is in the future...
And for everyone, I thought that a suggestion to shape layers of one texture could also help if anyone is stuck for a starting place on their own submission.
Is anyone else using automation? I feel almost as if I should count automations as effects for some reason...
I'm currently using a ring modulator in my submission (although its subject to change at any minute), and I know in and of itself its just one effect since it does one thing (and I'm not changing the frequency setting so I figured it would be okay with the no-spectral effects rule) but I do have an automation on the threshold for the effect to kick in, as well as the wet/dry setting for the effect through the piece. Should I count automations as effect slots since the technique of automating is another was to change the sound like the technique of adding effects. Perhaps I am just being silly since I've been staring at the screen for forever, but anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on automation I'd love to hear them!

If this is a problem ill cut out a piece.
@jgeralyn: Minimal does not mean the same for everybody, does a minimal piece have to have minimal tempo or "musical notes"?? I think its a little bit grey area here........ would be nice to have a discussion about what minimal exactly is to everybody.

Being forced home against my plans, I decided to take revenge on a group of innocents: the daring Freesounders!
Jokes apart, I'll refer to what Joanna wrote, to say this: feel free from any form of niceness as a welcome to a newcomer, criticism is welcome, especially if constructive.
I'm neither a musician nor a sound engineer, just a Linux user who got curious enough to fiddle with some of the available software; so, whatever feedback I get is a chance to learn something new or improve some superficial knowledge.
Besides, I'm not really interested in the competition aspect of the dare, I took the chance to explore a field I hadn't really touched before: samples (my background is made of MIDI sequencing and hardware synths, and no samplers).
It's been very interesting and serendipitous.
Thanks to AlienXXX for proposing the dares and to all of you daring Freesounders for keeping them alive and inspiring me with your works.

I am aware 'minimalist' means different things. For this dare (which is a bit of a warm up for other minimalist dares), it means you have a 'minimal' set of samples and effects to choose from (as defined by the rules).
Provided you comply with the rules in terms of number of samples and effects, you can use the effects as you please.
This includes using automation.
Automation itself is not an effect.
A ringmodulator, by the way, is not a 'spectral' effect.
Spectral effects will normally be descrived as such by the program creators. They do very powerfull things, such as: frequncy shifting, frequency (spectral) inverting, harmonic filtering, harmonic shifting, spectral morfing, etc...

I'd much rather know what people think about what i produce, and then be able to explain the intentions or simply learn from my mistakes. Than i would be without the critiques, good or bad.

Absolutely!
The critiques/comments are part of the dares. Although not mandatory, everyone is encouraged to give and take criticism.
And also to ask questions. If you like a particular sound or effect on someone's piece, ask them how they did it.
i meant submit an entry. i read the rules. i have been following the discussions/excitement around these dares.
