It has occurred to me that some amoung you may be getting bored between dares... especially the fastest entrants who tend to post their entry 5 minutes after I have posted the dare (only joking!)
These poor fellas then have to find something else to do for 3 weeks before the voting opens!
And have to wait yet another week or two before the new dare is announced!
Fortunately, bebops has come to the rescue and suggested some sort of never-ending collaboration project.
I had a little think and that is how the (first) Continuum challenge was born.
Here's the deal:
1) We start with one sound file (see at the end of this post). You are not allowed to use any other sounds, but you can use any processing and effects that you want.
2) The first interested user makes a post in this thread saying he or she is 'taking the file'.
He/she then has 24h to process the file and post the processed file back.
(Everybody else has to wait until the file 'comes back', I am afraid...)
We are not looking for 'musical pieces' (more like evolving textures), so the file should be uploaded back to Freesound. - But if your sound turns out to sound quite musical, that is OK too.
The user posts here saying the file has been uploaded and is waiting moderation.
Please harass me or other moderators to get it moderated quickly!
Once the file clears moderation the user posts the link to the file and the cycle starts again.
3) RULES
Any processing, editing, mangling, whatever allowed.
Any other sounds are not allowed.
All processed samples must be longer than 30s and shorter than 4 minutes long.
Sample must be uploaded back to Freesound tagged with "Continuum-1"
Ideally, once the sample is uploaded, you should go back in and edit it so that it is classed as a remix of the previous sample. - Ask if you don't kknow how to do this.
Here is the first sample:

This one is longer than 3 minutes, but that is OK for the starting sample.
Sorry I picked one of mine... But I think it is a good starting material. There is plenty of variation there, but it will also require a bit of work from you to make it sound different.
Have fun!!!!
(Ths is just a trial... hopefully we will also have more of these... So we can adjust it, make it different in the future, etc)
all right then, I'll have a go...

Great idea! I must admit I was thinking of suggesting something along these lines too. It is also called "the Exquisite Corpse" and was invented by the early Surrealists. In their version you had to draw on a piece of paper and folded it so the next person to draw couldn't see what you'd drawn. Finally it was unfolded to reveal the exquisite corpse! I remember playing this game as a kid.
yep.
I still play that game -

I like this....

also, I don't know how to class something as a remix...I assume it's more than just tagging it with remix? and @thatjeffcarter your telephone-game tag cracked me up!
To classify a sample as a remix of another sample:
After the sample has been approved, go to the sample page.
Right hand side, find 'edit sample information' and click on it.
Scroll down the page and find 'edit sound sources' and click on it. You can now search for the sample(s).

Thanks! Should we list all sounds in the chain of the continuum (i.e. I would include both thejaffcarts sample and yours) or just the sample immediately before our own?
AAAND I finished my turn: http://www.freesound.org/people/jgeralyn/sounds/145839/
I have the file now ... I will be quick ..

Just list the last one.
There used to be a function called'display remix tree' that would list all the relationships between remixed samples.
I think the function still exists. Try it!
How do I know its my turn?
Here the sound is back. Hope you like the result.
Who is next??
Just pick it and tell it to the forum here.
