Hello All
Yes, I know... the suspense was almost unbearable! My appologies, I have been away with only my mobile phone for internet access and the points system for this dare was quite complicated so I needed an excel spreadsheet to work it all out! (yes, I know... I have only myself to blame!)
Here are the results from VOTING:
Kyster 30 points
afleetingspec 27 points
bebops (ramacod) 20 points
ThatJeffCarter 16 points
Schluppiepippie (sonofapreacherman) 14 points
jgeralyn 13 points
Puniho 11 points
klankbeeld 10 points
escortmarius 5 points
AlienXXX 4 points
But...
... don't open the champagne just yet, as this is only half the story!
I still need to publish the points from SAMPLES and then add it all up before I can announce the WINNER!
I am still adding up all the sample points. Full results to be published later tonight!
... and here they are, the FINAL results.
Just as a reminder, the 'samples points' work like this: you get 1 point for each sample you uploaded + 1 point for each contestant that used that sample.
Afleetingspec: 27 votes + 45 samples points = 72 points
Puniho: 11 votes + 45 samples points = 56 points
Kyster: 30 votes + 25 samples points = 55 points
klankbeeld: 10 votes + 37 samples points = 47 points
escortmarius: 5 votes + 31 samples points = 36 points
jgeralyn: 13 votes + 18 samples points = 31 points
Schluppiepuppie: 14 votes + 14 samples points = 28 points
bebops: 20 votes + 0 samples points = 20 points
ThatJeffCarter: 16 votes + 0 samples points = 16 points
AlienXXX: 4 votes + 0 samples points (*) = 4 points
(*) yes, as I make the rules, it would be unfair for me to benefit from my own samples points
If anyone is curious, I would have scored 38 'samples points'
Congratulations to all, especially to Afleetingspec who is the great winner of this dare!
Well, well... didn't Puniho just become a surprise second!? I bet you are happy you did upload your entry in the end!
Appologies for this dare's points system. I know it was not exactly 'fair', but I hope it has been fun nonetheless. i promise that for future dates I will keep the points system fair (most of the time )
Special mentions...
Here are some samples that deserve special mention (no extra points, though):
-> Schluppiepuppie - 140771 - the broken music box sample. WONDERFULL. There is enough on this sample to run a full dare (hint, hint...)
-> Afleetingspec - the guitar samples - Genius! Great creativity here, mate! A really good set of samples which also turned out to be of great strategic value. Since most other samples would be atonal, these samples provided the tonal/mellodic material for many tracks. Result: afleetingspec got 45 samples points and was propelled to first place! Well played!
-> Schluppiepuppie (again!) - Banana box samples. - Great for drums!
-> toiletrolltube and jgeralyn - thank you for the cardboard tube and duct tape samples. These make great sounds. I was surprised we did not get loads of samples of these materials from different people as I thought they were such great choices.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone for participating on the dare and making it interesting and fun!
Hey, AlienXXX. Thank you for the voting, and thank you, bebops, as well!
I completely second what bebops said. You, AlienXXX, need a special mention for carrying these dares through and through, time and again. Very few of us have that commitment in us.
The dare was as much fun as it was enlightening. I think I can say this on behalf of all us darers that it forces us to put ourselves out of our comfort zone and think about things in a very different way. That sort of knowledge, understanding, and experience never goes to waste. You really have no clue how much I owe to these dares for having changed the way I handle some things in my compositions. Too many "ah!" moments to note here.
Kudos, also, to all others who submit, because it really helps me just open my mind to even more vast possibilities they put out here.
Regarding the guitar samples, that's exactly why I put them up. I sort of told myself "you know, I don't think there are going to be many melodic submissions, so where's my guitar, and how can I make it relevant to this dare?"
I actually got a little pleasure out of the fact that people used the samples I uploaded.
Thanx everybody,
Didnt know what to expect when I joined, but I really had fun and learned a lot.
And special thanx to our "mentor" AlienXXX for creating this dare!!!! Big up!!!

As for the satisfaction of other people using samples we have uploaded, that is something that all Freesounders have in common. Again, if you upload samples in the context of a dare, you are almost certain that at least some of them will be used. So that should be an encouragement to upload samples.

I used both those samples! I also thought the blown bottle samples were very good.
@Puniho
No, there were no votes from people not participating in the dare. There were a few people who uploaded samples but in the end decided not to submit an entry (which is fine), there were also some people who did not submit any samples but submitted an entry (which was also perfectly fine).
I intend to put a couple of posts up in the main page / Freesound blog.
First advertising the winners of dare 9 and then advertising when the voting is taking place for dare 10.
Hopefully we will get a couple more curious Freesounders to wander into the Dare forum
On the bottle blown samples.
Yes! Another 'classic' sound, but very effective. This was also another example of tuned (or easily tunable) sound on the 'dare-9' samples.
Again, I am surprised wer did not get more of people uploading that kind of sound. Especially as there were a few bottle sounds there.
So here's something you'll get to know about me. I really badly wanted to use the bottle sounds (the blown ones), but they were beer!
How could I?!
