Dare 11 - Celebrate Spring!
Boys and girls, I am still getting power fixed at my house, so I will be quick.
I know I still owe you some closing comments on the previous dare and comments on all your submissions, but right now I just want to open dare 11 - which I know some of you are itching all over to find out about !
This dare is much simpler and less restrictive than the previous one. I think it is good to take a break from such restrictive rules, although eventually we will have some more 'minimalist' dares again.
Now... for dare 11...
Spring!
Spring is great, we all love it. But more than that, spring can mean many things (the season, the source of a water spring, and a mechanical spring...)
So... celebrating the fact that sometimes searches in Freesound (or any other searcheable database, for that matter) sometimes produce things very different from what we were looking for... I invite you all to create musical pieces that cover all three meanings of the word spring.
You can use any sound that was uploaded to Freesound before 7th March 2012, provided it is not one of your sounds.
-----------------
Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.
Threads:
This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There is a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
I am hopping there will be enough submissions for voting. If so a VOTING thread will be created and then a RESULTS thread.
-------------------
GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder. Limmited to one entry per participant.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare, see below)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a BRIEF description of your work, a link to the submission file (files should be posted at soundcloud) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound.
2.3 - Unless specifically stated in the THEME rules, you cannot use your own Freesound samples.
2.4 - Collaboration entries are accepted, but you still can only enter one piece.
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE. The voting will be open for 1 week.
3.1 - If there is a vote, all entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself. This means your own single entry or a collaboration entry that you are part of.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 3 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 5 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare I will post the voting rules on the voting thread.
-------------
THEME
The theme is "Celebrate Spring!"
These are the THEME RULES:
1.1 - Your composition must be between 2 and 4 minutes long
1.2 - Your composition must cover all three meanings of the word Spring (the season, a source of a water stream, a mechanical spring).
1.3 - Each of the meanings of spring must be covered once or at least by one sound (using more than one sound for meaning is, of course, allowed)
1.4 - You can also use other 'supporting' sounds from Freesound (meaning that the main roles or the main of the composition must rely on the theme sounds).
For example, it would be OK to use drum sounds througout the piece and the theme sounds for ambience and mellody.
On the other hand, it would not be OK to use the theme sounds on a 30s intro and then non-theme sounds for the core of the piece.
2. - Entry format
2.1 - we will accept musical pieces, sound collages, sound scenes...
2.2 - Please upload your entry to Soundcloud if at all possible. Any file format accepted at Soundcloud will be acceptable.
3. - Submitting an entry
3.1 - Remember: Freesound is for sounds, not music. So do NOT upload your entry to Freesound.
Upload to Soundcloud - www.soundcloud.com
(If you do not have an account at Soundcloud, creating one is free and takes less than 1 minute.)
3.2 - Your entry must be DOWNLOADABLE.
3.3 - Post in this forum with a description of your work, and the attribution list of samples used.
3.4 - Join the soundcloud group "Freesound Dares" and share your track there. If you do not know how to do this ask for help in the "DISCUSSION" thread.
4. - Attribution
It is very important to make sure you attribute all samples used. This is required when using any samples from Freesound.
Please list 'theme' and 'non-theme' samples separately if possible.
5 - Other information
Please include in your submission a short description of what you have done to the samples.
If you want to give more detail, please use the DISCUSSION thread, so we can keep this thread compact.
6 - DEADLINE
Submissions will close on the 31st March around 11pm GMT.
Good luck !
For any questions, please use the DISCUSSION thread.
Im allready working on it

And I am already disqualified because it is not spring here in the southern hemisphere. Plus my computer is having Ram problems.
Hmmm.... you have 3 meanings of Spring... so maybe you can manage the other 2?
Just joking.
Hope the computer problems get sorted quick.

BEFORE today or up until today? klankbeeld uploaded an interesting track today...
Because a leak of time and no text-editer around the last month i just concentrate on recording and upload. have fun guys with the new dare. It looks good. dare 10 was very good to. see you later...
AlienXXX wrote:The point of this rule is for people to use sounds already at freesound and prevent them from recording a number of 'good' sounds and uploading usung a different account... Or from placing sample requests for specific sounds.
Cool, thats what I figure the restriction was for. I just happened upon that sound as I was searching for a goose hiss (AKA the most frightening sound ever). If anyone sees one around please let me know!

Hey!
Thank you for your entry and welcome to the dare!
Please join the Freesound Dares group at Soundcloud and share your entry there. - this way all entries are compiled in one place.
Use the dare 11 discussion thread in this forum if you have any questions or comments
Quick question, does all the source material have to come from Freesound and then be FXd or can some of the sound be originally synthesised, and is it anything at all on the site? And is there any restriction on, for example, spectral processing like the previous one?
Thanks.

All sounds must come from freesound. They must also have been uploaded before the dare was posted. See jgeralyn's question and my answer as to why.
No sounds from outside freesound, please. Incuding anything you play or synthesize yourself. (but stay tunned, this will be allowed at some point in future dares)
Is there anything in this site?
You mean synth sounds? - loads!!!
And you are allowed to use any freesounds you want.
No restrictions at all on FX. You can use any FX you want, including spectral processing.
Just intended to ask about restrictions for waht sounds can be used. Sounds good tho, thanks. I'll get working on it!
