Dare 12 - A day in life (double dare!)
Ladies and gentlemen, first of all, let me tell you that this is a double dare!
(actually, it is a triple dare, if you count the initial sample submission stage...)
So... what is it all about this time?
The theme is 'a day in life'.
This dare starts with a sample submission request: Please upload the sounds of 5 objects that you touch and/or carry with you (nearly) everyday.
Maximum duration of each sound is 1min, but really we are looking for short sounds (rustle of keys or coins in your pocket, typing on your computer keyboard, the sound of closing your front door... you get the idea)
Each user is asked to upload 5 sounds.
This is not mandatory - if you can't record, don't worry, you can still participate in the dare (and the 'double dare')
One final rule is that at least 2 of the sounds must be from objects that you carry with you (on your pocket, handbag, etc)... The other 3 could just be things you touch everyday but don't darry (your front door, your car,...)
You will get 1 point for each sampe you upload. You will get 1 point for each of your samples used.
Sound submissions start now and will finish on the 10th April.
Please post on this thread to let me know you have uploaded samples os I can moderate them as soon as possible. (Might take longer than usual as I am away from home and with only occasional access to the internet).
Please make sure sounds are tagged with "dare-12".
The dare...
As for your dare submission, you are asked to take "dare-12" sounds from others and create a sound scene - No music entries are acceptable!!!
Just to clarify, for a sound scene you have to imagine a short scene or a place and then use sounds to recreate that place or scene - Listen to klankbeeld previous dare entries, they usually fall onto this category (although some of them are also a bit musical). klankbeeld's entries always tell a story. That is what we are looking for here.
You can use up to 3 non dare-12 sounds in your composition.
No one has entered a collaboration piece before... but please note that for this dare no collaborations will be accepted. Sorry! - working out the points would be too complicated.
The double dare...
Well, that is a mystery for now! But at some point after the 10th of April you will be given further instructions to complete the 'double dare'. You don't have to - but you get more points if you do!.
Note: you can only submit a piece for the 'double dare' if you have first submitted a piece for the 'dare'.

Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.
Threads:
This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There is a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
I am hopping there will be enough submissions for voting. If so a VOTING thread will be created and then a RESULTS thread.
-------------------
GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder. Limmited to one entry per participant.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare, see below)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a BRIEF description of your work, a link to the submission file (files should be posted at soundcloud) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound.
2.3 - Unless specifically stated in the THEME rules, you cannot use your own Freesound samples.
2.4 - Sorry, no collaboration entries this time - working out the points would be a nightmare!
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE.
3.1 - If there is a vote, all entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 3 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 5 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare I will post the voting rules on the voting thread.
-------------
THEME
The theme is "a day in life"
These are the THEME RULES:
1.1 - Your composition must be between 1 and 4 minutes long
1.2 - Your composition must tell a little story or illustrate a place/scene - I call this type of entry a 'sound scene'.
1.3 - You can also use a maximum of 3 'supporting' sounds from Freesound which are not tagged as 'dare-12'.
2. - Entry format
2.1 - For this dare only sound scenes, please.
2.2 - Please upload your entry to Soundcloud if at all possible. Any file format accepted at Soundcloud will be acceptable.
3. - Submitting an entry
3.1 - Please do NOT upload your entry to Freesound.
Upload to Soundcloud - www.soundcloud.com
(If you do not have an account at Soundcloud, creating one is free and takes less than 1 minute.)
3.2 - Your entry must be DOWNLOADABLE.
3.3 - Post in this forum with a description of your work, and the attribution list of samples used.
3.4 - Join the soundcloud group "Freesound Dares" and share your track there. If you do not know how to do this ask for help in the "DISCUSSION" thread.
4. - Attribution
It is very important to make sure you attribute all samples used. This is required when using any samples from Freesound and will be essential for the scoring of points!
Please list 'theme' and 'non-theme' samples separately if possible.
5 - Other information
If you want to give more detail about your entry or for anything else that is not a submission, please use the DISCUSSION thread, so we can keep this thread compact.
6 - DEADLINES (EDITED 11 APRIL 2012)
Submission of samples closes on 11th April (previously 10th April).
Submission of dare entries closes 25th April (previously 23rd April).
(closing times are 11pm GMT)
Please note I have extended the deadlines since I was away and unnable to upload my own samples. I do this by exception: I don't plan to make an habit of being late/extending deadlines...
Good luck !
For any questions, please use the DISCUSSION thread.

I'm pretty sure that means you can use as many sounds as you want that others upload for this dare, but if you want to use additional sounds there is a maximum of 3.
afleetingspeck, jgeralyn
Thank you for spoting that. I did mean "non dare-12 sounds".
I have corrected my original post.
Also created a discussion thread... Trying to do this while away from home sucks. I am always rushing as I usually get only a few minutes of internet time...
Uploaded and moderated! you can download the pack or find the individual sounds here: http://www.freesound.org/people/jgeralyn/packs/9311/
My two "carry with me" sounds are the sounds of my jewelry and purse zipper, I also recorded my room door which jitters in its frame in the winter (luckily it wasn't very humid today so I got an okay recording), rolling up the windows of my car, and dicing an onion (I do this at lease 5 times a week so I figured it counted) the dicing sound is very rhythmic and I liked how it almost sounds like someone walking down the stairs...
AlienXXX: If only one or two others upload sounds can we suspend the "you can't use your own sounds" rule just for this month?
Here are my sounds:
http://www.freesound.org/people/OSH37/packs/9316/
Dare12_1_zip.wav - the zip from my bag
Dare12_2_handy.wav - typing numbers in my mobile phone
Dare12_3_electric toothbrush.wav - i hear it three times a day
Dare12_4_water.wav - it is good to have it every day
Dare12_5_door.wav - if i leave my flat, i hear this sound.
Enjoy the sounds!
OK, I uploaded five sounds, awaiting moderation.
Dunno if two of them will qualify: my tabla doesn't exactly move. But my guitar does. So those are the two non-motile sounds.
The moving sounds come from my debit/credit cards and all the other plastic cards in my wallet, and then I have me singing (I carry my voice with me ) in a water bottle (again, a thing that I carry, so I just combined the two). Finally, there's the sound of a closet door sliding open and close for the second non-motile sound.
Here's the pack:
http://www.freesound.org/people/afleetingspeck/packs/9339/
I've uploaded a few awaiting moderation. http://www.freesound.org/people/Puniho/packs/9333/ Mistakenly labeled as Dare 11 sorry. The only sound I could think of that I carry was a pair of plastic shoes. I don't carry things around really. Lots of things I touch. I recorded beatboxing on my guitar body _ I tryed to make it sound as unmusical as possible... lol. and the sound of my paintbrushes - I guess I carry those around with me for most of the day... Also the sound of sheet music being shuffled.

When I try to download this one: http://www.freesound.org/people/jgeralyn/packs/9311/ it says "page not found"

I'm not entirely sure whats up with that. When I look at the pack page it says that the pack isnt available for download at the moment, but I can see the individual sounds at that link. Also, most have been downloaded already, so i know they're visible to others... weirdness
here's the links to the individual sounds if it helps:

I've edited the info so it says "Dare-12" now, but I can't seem to be able to change the pack name. I've also uplaoaded another drumming sound with my guitar balanced on top of a large djembe drum.

To All
Unfortunately we have had problems with sample packs in the past. I think this looks to be a slightly different flavour, but essentially could be part of the same. In the past we had some packs not being created or samples being missed out of packs.
The development team have had at least two attempts at fixing this and we thought they had been sucessfull. This is a new pack, so it could be a 'one off' or it could mean that the problem is still lurking around
I will ask you to PM me with any other packs that you know are not working. I will contact the development team about this.
Please do not post on this thread to report any other non-working packs. PM me instead.
Also, please do not expect this to be fixed overnight... If in doubt, best to download the individual samples (less comfortable, I know, but there aren't that many)
Thanks.
I've posted some samples for Dare 12.
These are also my first posts to Freesound:
http://www.freesound.org/people/bohara2000/sounds/151294/
http://www.freesound.org/people/bohara2000/sounds/151293/

http://www.freesound.org/people/bohara2000/sounds/151291/
http://www.freesound.org/people/bohara2000/sounds/151290/
I think they still need to be moderated so I'm not sure if they'll show up right away.
My samples are now uploaded:
http://www.freesound.org/people/AlienXXX/packs/9358/
No more submissions for samples, please.
I have extended the submissions for compositions to the 25th April (main post edited accordingly).
I posted an entry for Dare 12. I've called it Another Job Well Done (Freesound Dare 12)
This piece uses the following clips from freesound:
dare12-1-zip, dare12-4-water, and dare12-5-door by osh37 (http://freesound.org/people/osh37/)
dicing-an-onion-home-april2012 by jgeralyn (http://freesound.org/people/jgeralyn/)
singing-inside-water-bottle-drunk-and-funny by afleetingspeck (http://freesound.org/people/afleetingspeck/)
gereedschap by escortmarius (http://freesound.org/people/escortmarius/)
shuffled-sheet-music by puniho (http://freesound.org/people/puniho/)
I don't want to say a whole lot about the piece because so far different people have seen different things in their heads when I played it for them.
Hopefully this meets the qualifications of a "sound scene". I'd be interested in hearing what other people think.
Hope you enjoy!
Boys and girls,
So far we have only had one entry for dare 13. I was planning to add a second stage to the dare, but I won't bother.
Not much happening in terms of discussion/comments either (both here and at Soundcloud).
Considering how the last dare went (and this is possibly heading the same way) I need to ask:
Is anyone working on a piece for dare 13?
I have said it several times before: I don't 'make' these dares, you guys do. It is quite obvious that there is no point me trying to run something if there is no interest in it from the Freesound community.
So be honest. A reply to say "I am not working on an entry" is fine. - Lack of any reply works just as well. What I am asking is that you don't post to say that you are working on an entry if you are actually not.
If people don't want to participate that is absolutely fine, and I will not take it parsonally. But it will save me the embarassment of opening yet another dare after this one, and me and the dares will just take a break instead.
Thanks
I'm sorry to say that I'm not working on one this time. I've been busy with much else. I hope/plan to participate next time around.
