Dare 14 - Celebrating Joana's birthday !
i hope you forgive me if the theme for this dare is somewhat self-serving.
My younger daughter Joana is 5 and will turn 6 on the 5th July. She is a fan of Freesound. She knows I spend a lot of time here and enjoys listening to the sounds with me. On occasion she has asked me to make some sound sand upload those to Freesound.
I will be asking you to create a musical piece using only sounds that I have created with Joana's help.
By the time of Joana's birthday submissions will have closed and we will be in the voting phase. I will ask Joana to listen to all entries.
Although I will not ask her to vote, I will ask her to pick her favourite (my entry will be excluded). - bonus points and great praise will be given to the winner of this very special distinction !
You are allowed to use any effects you want on the sounds, but please post with a description/explanation of what you have done.
I will try to explain to Joana how her sounds were used.
As a final note... my older daughter's birthday is also comming up, so don't be surprised if I ask you to do this again very soon !
-----------------
Just a quick reminder of how this works in terms of rules:
GENERAL RULES - will apply to all dares I wil be posting. These are things like "must use sounds from Freesound"
THEME RULES - these will be specific for each dare.
VOTING - If there are enough entries there will be a voting.
Threads:
This is the thread with the DARE theme and rules. Submissions will also be posted on this thread.
There is a thread for DISCUSSION. This is where you can comment on other people's work, ask questions, etc.
I am hopping there will be enough submissions for voting. If so a VOTING thread will be created and then a RESULTS thread.
-------------------
GENERAL RULES
1 - The dare is open to any Freesounder.
2 - In all dares you are required to:
2.1 - use sounds from Freesound (the details of what sounds you can and can't use will be specific to each dare, see below)
2.2.- Post in the DARE thread with a BRIEF description of your work, a link to the submission file (files should be posted at soundcloud) list of attributions (i.e., list all sounds you have used from Freesound).
Please do describe how you have used the sounds to create your piece.
3 - If there are enough entrants, a voting will take place at the end of the DARE. Details are posted in the voting threat, but voting will normally be open for 1 week.
3.1 - If there is a vote, all entrants to the dare must vote or will be desqualified.
3.2 - You are not allowed to vote for yourself.
3.3 - Freesounders who have not submitted an entry are allowed to vote IF they have been Freesound members for longer than 3 months and have either uploaded 3 sounds to the Freesound database OR have 5 posts in the forums.
3.4 - If there are enough entrants for this dare, I create a voting thread which will contain the voting rules and deadline.

Dear All,
Please note that there is a problem with Freesound at the moment and it is not possible to download any packs.
If you want to participate in this dare, you will have to download the samples individually.
Appologies for the inconvenience. The problem has been reported to the technical guys...
here is my entry: http://soundcloud.com/chalkwoman/i-ahum-ahaauhmauhahn
i posted all of the effects, and such on soundcloud, as it was quite lengthy. sorry if its confusing, i did my best to clarify.
hope you like it, i feel really good about this one, i tried to stretch myself, and do something different!
im not sure where to post this, but i figure it'll get read here, this is the last dare i will be able to participate in, until maybe october. my family is moving to so.car. from Ut, and i will not be able to move with them, instead i will be moving to my fathers house, but he doest not allow/believe in kids/teens using the internet, so i will not have access to a computer let alone the internet... it really isn't my idea, and I'm not happy about this, but until i can move on my own there is nothing i can do.
so i wanted to thank everyone, i have really enjoyed the dares, and the community, and you have all inspired me, and helped me push myself to become a better artist, and even a better person! so thank you very much, and hopefully situations will change, but if not, ill be back in october!
Hey Cannonrayj
Sorry to hear about this, but don't worry: Freesound has been around for years. It will certainly be here when you come back!
Tell you what. Why don't you use this as a little (creative) break?
Read, write, listen... Maybe do some drawing?
In the time wI was away from my computer, say for example when travelling in the train, I wrote a lot of notes about stuff I wanted to try for music making, sound processing.
Keep the notes. One day you will be stuck for inspiration... They will come in handy.
Take care and hope to see you again when you can come back online.

Thats a really great tip AlienXXX!!!!!!!!
Hello everyone,
ThatJeffCarter is currently not able to post - somehow the link to his entry at blogspot is triggering the SPAM filters at the Freesound forum.
i can't post it either for the same reason.
You will have to copy and paste the address below to your browser and remove the '-' at the start window...

this link is working:
http://thatjeffcarterwashere.blogspot.it/2012/06/once-more-around-sun-freesound-dare.html
but blogspot redirect me to .it because of my local setting,
don't know if the .com site is working.
thanks everyone....
it looks as if whatever was blocking me as a spambot has been resolved.

is the correct link and should work.
Great one, Jeff. Funny, I was just exploring a similar technique on the same sounds! Mine was in pursuit of Aphex Twin's famous "Bucephelous Bouncing Ball" sound, loading sounds as loops in a sampler automating the loop length either manually or synced to number of loops. (Shortcircuit is an amazing free VSTi sampler). On making tones out of extreme loops, I've been using Variety of Sound's freeware NAsty-DLA. It's a delay FX that sounds nice with feedback all the way up. "Play" the delay time and you can make melodies out of the tones.
Your blog is really interesting. I'm not well versed in Christianity (or any religion) but I can tell you have a unique approach to it with the multimedia and songs, connecting it to art in more abstract ways than usual. There used to be (or still is?) an Industrial music group ("Classic" Industrial, not the dancy stuff) that was centered on Christianity (in a "pro" not "anti" way...) Somehow they took inspiration from Christ to do their crazy experimental noise.
Dear All,
Apologies for my absence. Since starting my new job it has been increasingly difficult to reconcile my work/family life with any sort of deadlines at Freesound.
I still have my entry half done and have not been able to touch it for the last 10 days.
I will be able to post it at the weekend and with that I will close the submissions on this dare.
I know it is way over the proposed deadline, but since there were only two other entries - meaning there will be no voting, I guess it is OK to extend.
Given my work commitments and the fact that participation numbers have been very low in the last few dares, this will mark the end of the dares (at least for a while).
Thank you all for your participation so far.
Hi everybody,
Here is my entrie for dare-14: http://soundcloud.com/escortmarius/dare
I used all samples from the sample pack: 8677_alienxxx_bing-bang-bong-band
No effects.
I am still working on a few trumpets, but I think Im not going to get were I want with this.......
So for now I left them out.(sometimes I wish there were 48 hours in a day)
Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOANA!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOOOOO!!!!, please please please.........lets continue, just make it easy for yourself with a small dare or something, please????????
(maybe I can help???)
I think we need to keep it going for the summer, since Im going to have a little more time with the hollydays.(maybe other people too)
Hi Marius, thank you for your post.
I was going to reply by PM, but then decided a public answer would be better.
My problem with the dares is not so much the amount of work involved. The most work is often composing my own entry.
True that some of the ideas i had for votes/points for some previous dares were a lot of trouble to calculate. But i can avoid those.
The problem is that i have no control or notice about my workload. A month ago i did a lot of travelling - luckily managed to pretty much avoid dare deadline dates on dates when i was away.
The last two weeks i have spent every evening on phonecalls with suppliers the other side of the world. This is taking up the time slot i normaly would dedicate to freesound.
By the time i am done with those calls and other must-do actuvities, i have no energy or mood for freesound or music making.
Another day (or week) might be different (easier) and I might have the time. But if these busy periods clash with Freesound Dare deadlines then I have a problem. And they will. Because you have the deadline to post entries, the deadline for voting, etc.
Now, I want people to adhere to deadlines. I think the dares can't run without the existence of deadlines - especially if we have voting, etc.
We can certainly do other things, such as mini-dares or 'continuum dares' where there are no deadlines.
Also, and to be honest, people seem to have lost interst to participate in the dares anyway.
I think I will try a continuum dare next and see what kind of reception that gets.
That will give me sometime to rest. Maybe work will get easier in the meantime.

I'm sorry to hear that. But i know how work can get in the way of the things you want, and understand your decision. Work get in my way too, hence my absence from the dares.
I want to thank you though, for bringing the dares to a revival. I've learned a lot from the dares, starting from scratch to now being able to at least understand just a little of what i'm doing. So a big thank you is in it's right place i think
AlienXX
what about letting Freesounders propose dares by themselves?
minor dares with no rules, no votation - and no burden for you.
for major Dares we'll wait for our official DareKeeper
