Dear All,
due to heavy work commitments, i have decided I will not be running a 'proper' dare this month.
However, since there seems to be interest in keeping the dares going, at least in some form, here is a little challenge with no deadlines and only some very simple rules.
- Your challenge is to create a seamless loop which contains at least one unusual sound. All sond sused must be from Freesound. You can use your own sounds.
- Mainly this would mean rhythmic loops, and to allow these to be used together later in future productions, please only submit loops at 90bpm, 120bm or 150bpm.
- Preferred loop size is 4 bars. Maximum 8 bars, please.
- If you don't want to make a rhythmic loop, you can still participate - create some other sort of looping sound (drones, for example) adhereing to the bpm and lenghts above. (Best way to do this is to take a rhythmic loop submission from someone else, play that in your DAW on a separate track and then create an arrangement that goes well with it. Then delete or mute the rhythmic loop and export the rest as your entry).
- All sound formats and bit rates accepted.
- Submit entries to Freesound with the following tags: "continuum-4", "###bpm", "#bars". Of course, also add any other tags that are appropriate.
- Please explain in your description what was your 'unnusual' sound and give credits to all sounds used.
- If you post on this thread when you submit any entries, I will try to moderate those as quickly as possible.
Examples of unusual sounds you could use:
- Drum loop (snare, bassdrum, etc) where you manage to put the sound of your boiling kettle.
- The sound of a car engine turned into a bass rhythm loop.
- The sound of voices stretched into a seamless looping drone.
I will post some examples later to 'inspire' you
Nice one, thank you!!
Can I use my homemade instruments?? Or actually,
Can I use them right away, or do I need to upload them as samples first, and then use the samples??
I don't really mind. But I think it is always nice if you could upload the sounds as samples too.
In this mini-dare you can use any sounds, including your own.
Part of the idea is that if there is something that you have and want to use, you might share that as Freesound samples too.
Up to you. This is pretty open
Here is a break beat of 4 bars at 120bpm, created in Jeskola Buzz using all freesound.org samples as detailed in the description.
at 90 bpm - a dystopic and desperate loop -

at 120 bpm - a sort of video game, beeps and blips rhythm - http://www.freesound.org/people/thatjeffcarter/sounds/160715/
at 150 bpm - smooth strings and strange baby noises -

4 breaks at 90 bpm created solely from freesound.org instruments:

and again with a spacious ballad effect:

Here's the same two samples above, re-worked with a sliding EQ cut off effect, like a 'break it down' type part of the beat
Hmmmm.... Ermmmm
Well, as I said in the description... I was in a funny mood...
Here is a pack with 4 loops at 120bpm 4/4

They're great and the first one is funny lol. A latin American feel with a touch of humour

I used some vocal from the same voice that gave us the infamous "Dwight" sample! I used the phrase "the world is nothing" and chopped it up in Recycle to make Rex loops which I played back with DrOctorex and alternated the slices for a random effect. I also modulated the pitch with an LFO for variation.
Very good.
The only thing missing is that the 'Dwight' sample is not mentioned in the description on the uploaded samples, although you mentiuon here that you used some posrtions of that too.
Recycle sounds like good fun. I have Reason.
I think I will update to the next version. Also, if I am feeling wealthy, I might purchase Recycle too... i might have to break the piggy bank...
Here's a voice recording from freesound.org, which I moved into place at 90bpm using Sony Acid. I've applied various filters/effects. The voice speaks in time across 8x 90bpm bars.

Some beeps I sequenced at 120bpm can be found here:
http://www.freesound.org/people/Snapper4298/sounds/161097/
And finally there's some choir type sequenced "ahh's" created by turning the volume up and down on every beat, recorded at 150bpm found here:
What about this one?
http://www.freesound.org/people/AlienXXX/sounds/161183/
Done by hand - no Recycle here (yet!)
It was a simple sound, so it was fairly easy.
'Farily easy'... he says...
Just realized something went wrong with the sound I exported yesterday: Instead of 2 bars, I ended up with 1 and 3/4 bars. So, obviously, it does not loop seamlessly at 150bpm
Corrected version here:

Guys
I encourage you to go totally mental with your loops:

Have fun!
Here's a couple of 120 bpm loops from this sample:
http://www.freesound.org/people/juskiddink/sounds/161243/
I didn't use any other sounds but just added various effects to the original
....waltzy loop:
http://www.freesound.org/people/juskiddink/sounds/161244/
....House loop:
http://www.freesound.org/people/juskiddink/sounds/161245/
I've made a pack of loops called Sleazey Loops:
http://www.freesound.org/people/Puniho/packs/9970/
I used this previous Conituum-4 contribution:
http://www.freesound.org/people/Snapper4298/sounds/161093/
I denoised it and selected phrases which were sliced up with Recycle and played back with lfos modulating various filter frequencies and pitch etc. Some have had parts reversed for variation and some were recorded at the three different bpms.
