Dare 16 - Be afraid, be very afraid!...- DISCUSSION

I'm finishing listening to all the submissions, and ranking my favs, but probably won't be done til tomorrow...was wondering, what is the deadline for voting? Probably in the forums somewhere, but I can't find it.

We typically let the voting go for 5-7 days. I'd think it's somewhere around the 5th of November, but let's see what AlienXXX has to say.

Shortly after the submissions close, I post another thread for voting.
Voting, generally follows the same pattern... but sometimes I have a few surprises or come up with rules for extra points...

Okay, here we go: after carefully listen to each entry, I wrote up a reasonably detailed review for each. Here they are, in the order I listened to them (Read: random):

I love the subtlety of the background sounds, how they move around your head. the midsection is a little long, and the vocal is obviously repeated -- a little pitch shifting/time distorting would help that -- but the payoff is great; I laughed out loud when -- SPOILER -- I heard the wilhelm scream at the end.

Great production! Nice dynamic range too. Sound like ambient malicious; very much soundtrackish. This wouldn't sound out of place looped in an Alien-esque video game or dark rpg. Thumbs up!

Love the concept...structurally this is probably the most accomplished piece in the contest. A few sounds are -- very slightly -- out of place, but that is to be expected given the scope of the piece. You REALLY tell a story here, you make it musical, and make it a journey. There are slightly more polished pieces, but this is still my fav of the bunch. Two thumbs way up!

Slick, polished, but a bit overlong...the ending is great and original sounding, but by the time one gets there they're thinking "nothing is going to happen here...it's just breathing and ambiance." Listeners: stick through to the end!

Seriously though, this is one of the best in the contest, but I think the ending sort of sells it short: it deserves better than the sound engineer equivalent of being rickrolled. In mrs bates it worked; in here it's a letdown. Just my two cents.

The progression is a little bit fuzzy at first, but then becomes clearer. Ends up being quite good. The rain sound is often overpowering; personally, I'd back it off. Also, the whole track sounds like it's been subject to too much compression. If you've got master track compression or limiting on here, drop it; if you've got it on any of the sub-tracks, drop or seriously reduce it. Love when the guy gets back in the car, how you handle the sound transition from rain outside to rain on a car roof. Don't know about using black betty in there though...it's cut up, but you've still got a good bit in there. Ending is a nice transition, though the very end sort of peter's out. Still, very good.

On a purely technical note: Why 64kbps? You realize the track is super mangled right? This deserves a better qual upload; if data's an issue, try ogg. Anyway, the track is really pretty good...I'm a little biased cause this was one of the last I listened too, and I'd already heard quite a few "guy walking around in echoy place, breathing heavily, thunder and evil laughs in the background, etc." That being said, I actually think this meshes better than mrs bates...all the sounds go together really well until the end...the screams at 5:09 are totally out of place, and what's with the tribal drums? Still, overall, a solid showing.

Very good...like how the background ambiance is present but subtle. The moment of truth is quite icky too. The foley sounds are well chosen, clear but not too detached. The professional voice acting really helps, though the recording is almost a little too clean...if that makes sense. Doing this in audacity must have been a PITA; major points for accomplishing that. The one other criticism I'd render is that the ending sort of drags out aimlessly; also, when you throw dirt on a corpse it makes a sort of thumping sound which is missing...hard to explain unless you've heard it.

Heh, heh...plus for a freesound plug...got to say though, not sure exactly what's happening in here...to me, sounds like guy going into a spooky basement, setting a bomb which blows a hole through to hell, releasing a bunch of inverse anthropomorphites? Actually, if that is the setup...well, pretty good.

Hey, a musical entry! Nice shakeup after hearing all the soundscapes. Also, really good track...spooky but whimsical, very little trace of maliciousness. A dance of the mischievous macabre, a light ghost boogie. Chilled out. Thumps up.

The summary really brings this to life...with it, this piece takes on an extra clarity. That being said, the first half is the most interesting...though a couple voice samples sound like they are coming out of a cardboard box. The second half starts whipping out the evils laughs and peters out a bit, at least for me.

Bring on the pipeorgan! Really like this one, though it could lose the heartbeat. Love the gremlin sounds when the door is opened. Really like the ending...total left turn into musicality, but works great. One of my favs.

Okay, this is a strange one...can't really follow it, but it's a neat soundscape. Like the 'we will not be responsible' bit, wolf sounds...the midsection becomes almost meditative...the best bit is the cat sounds; having had cats for a long time, the yowl sound is one they make when they are very agitated...highly unsettling. The ending is pretty good...GAME OVER. Still seems like a succession of random pieces though, which kind of hurts it for me.

Thanks for your honest critique, I think the part that got me the more was the professional voice acting, because I am not a professional voice actor by any means but I do look at myself as a voice actor before a mixer. I actually mix for 2 of my friends series plus 2 of my own I find mixing in Audacity quite simple... but I will be getting mixcraft soon, though something tells me I will still enjoy audacity because I find the set up easy to follow. There really wasn't an ending to it and it was suppose to just kind of slowly fade out, but I can see how that can be seeing as dragged out. The dirt thing will help me in the future because I spent a lot of time searching for sound effects for that and didn't find anything that I liked because I didn't know what it would sound like, so I just stuck to the sound of the shovel.

What kind of projects do you wish to undertake in the future with audacity/mixcraft or any other audio software? Audacity is mostly a sound editor. For more complex compositions (and with your last entry, I'd think you'd do just as fine with audacity), having tools to sequence/arrange, sample sounds etc helps a lot.
I guess it comes down to the use-case. Advanced audio workstations will definitely ease the process and give you a few more tools to play around with.

Well with Audacity I do radio plays, I also mix some of my friends Machinima series and my own collab series + I try to do song covers.
With Mixcraft my bf does song covers so I will probably only switch that over but I am not sure, I am a person that if I can get used to what I have I don't like to change because I already know how things work...
If I could making music composers would be interesting, but I don't see myself being able to get far in that, so I stick to radio plays.
I've made a remake of Zombination. The volumes are adjusted (i hope enough )and i discovered the world of sample library's so i've been able to score the track also. I have no musical background so it's al new to me but it sounds pretty cool if i may say so.... I hope you like it better than the origional.
