Hi. I had a question: can we record with an analog camcorder? I was planning on using my sony handycam ccd TR716, which records on analog hi8 tapes. I was planning on using the onboard mic, but the camera has a mic slot, so I have another question which is: if I can record with the camera, can I record the audio with a digital shotgun mic attached to the analog camcorder? I'm sorry if my wording doesn't make sense. I hope you can still understand what I'm asking. Thank you!

Thank you for the reply. I have submitted my recording. I hope you like it; it's my first entry for this dare contest.
I spent some time today reviewing old cassette tapes from my wild and crazy high school years (late seventies, mostly), and picked out a few horrible-sounding snippets that might fit the intent of this dare. I uploaded them to a collab-2 pack. It's kind of scary to post such bad samples. Maybe I can delete them once we're done with this dare. I thought about digging out some more recent SVHS HiFi recordings, which are actually probably as clean as amateur digital recordings were during the 90's, but decided I had dumped enough time into this warm-up. Find them (once moderated) at http://www.freesound.org/people/zimbot/packs/10847/.
I, too, have never taken part in one of these dares. Most of them involve compositing music from sounds, which is not my interest on freesound, at all. I'm more into crafting sounds (sound design).

This gives me an idea for a dare. Rather, a newer concept than a dare, yet a dare. Thank you!
Hello all!
It has been a busy new year and I hope everyone is well.
I may have some time this Tuesday to record some tape samples.
Here's my idea:
I'm going to hook up my old Tascam 4-track, find some tape, then walk around the house recording anything I come across.
I haven't busted out the ol' tape recorder in a while, so this should be interesting.
I'll try and have the pack ready to go before the deadline.
This will be fun indeed!
Hi everybody,
I uploaded some sounds(waiting to be moderated)
They are in a pack called Collab-2.
The recordings are pretty bad, I had to force my will on the machines to get them to record!!
First I got a Sony TC-FX25, didnt work so I took it apart to see whats going on...
I think there was a spring missing, I managed to get the machine recording, manually moving the tape "head" on the tape.
Then I got another machine a Sony TC-186SD, I put a cassette inside press play....
It played! Only after a few seconds there was a beep sound, getting louder and louder.
Also the left channel VU meter started doing weird stuff.
So this one also had to undergo some surgery.
Somehow its working now, still not how it should be though.
But I am not jet done playing!!
So, maybe some more sounds will follow....

Hi Darers, I've got a few more sounds for you all, (EDIT: and they all went through moderation quickly, thanks to the Moderation Fairy )
First, again on the meta theme of taping tapes, a cassette tape (from the 90's) manually winded on the tip of a pen, until it reaches the end. (Yay for saving batteries! )

Then, today's recordings of some old stuff.
An unbranded 25W amplifier for keyboards/synths from the late 80's being switched on, then off; noisier than it should as it's probably full of dust. You can hear the noise surviving the switch off for a while.
Recorded keeping the recorder very close to the loudspeaker.

A "scacciapensieri" (small souvenir version from the early 80's), traditional instrument from Sicily. It's practically a Jew's Harp. The first sound is just the vibrating blade; second and third see the mouth and tongue moving to shape the sound. The long sequence and the final sounds also have breath goingh through and powering the sound, similarly to how the instrument should be played.
It's exactly the one on the left in this picture ( https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filecacciapensieri.jpg - argh, smileys! it's : S )

The sharpening of a pencil from the 70's (if not earlier).

And finally, the rarest gem for the data stream section (drum roll...)
Sinclair ZX80 saving a 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" program (typed blindly! ) The tape recorder only has a built-in mic, so the ZX80 save was played by PC speakers and recorded with the recorder very close to the speaker, hence the high noise (sorry).

The Moderation Fairy has been working hard this weekend, carrying all your beautiful sounds into the Freesound database.
I believe me or other mods have approved all tape sounds uploaded for this dare so far... If you have any sounds still waiting, please let me know
Oh, thank the Fairy for me, that was very... fair!
I just remembered I wanted to record 2 more things (my ZX80 is more reliable than my brain!) but I should make it in time for the deadline.
I am getting such an amazing reponse and such amazing sounds that I am begining to think that asking for tape sounds is something I should do again in the future.
Going through old tapes certainly brought back some memories for me.

I think a bigger part of the challenge in part 2 of this dare is going to actually sift through the many samples that have been uploaded. It's gonna be as much of a patience dare as it's going to be all the other things.

Ok, here's another little contribution, dedicated to a data support "quickly" gone the way of the dodo: the 3.5" floppy disk.
Manually pulling and releasing the shutter

Inserts and ejects of the floppy from the reader in a mid-tower computer

(moderation promptly handled by the Moderation Fairy!)
Guys, I felt I was being a bit outdone in the lo-fi category.
So I have started a little pack, especially for those for whom lo-fi is never quite low enough:

I hope you 'enjoy' the sounds. Or that at least it makes you smile

I sent you a message from the moderation system. It is missing the tag 'tape'.
I am approving. Please edit the sound to add the tag.
Moderating the other 2 sounds also.
