Hello Good Freesound Darers!
With the holidays at our table, we have a lot on our plates (do not excuse the pun). Between family and friends and the bustle of everyday life, making time for fun becomes all the more crucial if one hopes to feel happy and creative. Fun can be put aside to be had for another day; it can be placed in storage when there's no more space in the cupboards; it can even be stamped and shipped off to Alaska so as not to get in the way. But what kind of fun is that? Certainly not any kind of fun worth noting.
Why not act on your impulses and inner gut murmurs? Why not make time for the stuff that matters most?
Darers, you may be asking yourselves, "What the heck is this guy going on about?!" I'll tell you.
- I will post my New Year's Resolutions here
- I will write a song based on my resolutions
- I will use samples from the incredibly expansive Freesound library
- I will find/upload samples in the spirit of celebration and inspiration (e.g. champagne, fireworks, laughter)
- I will be sure the samples are cleared for use and tag any uploaded samples with "Daresolutions"
- I will post a link to my finished song on a separate thread titled "New Year's Daresolutions (submissions)"
- I will credit each sample that was used in my piece
- I will have a lot of fun
If you would like to participate in this Dare, leave a comment below. I realize how intimate the subject matter may be, but part of being creative means creating from a real place. If you have no means of arranging and recording a composition, don't hesitate to post lyrics or a poem about your New Year's Daresolutions on the submissions page.
And now, my Daresolutions:
1. I dare to be confident in my abilities to move people with my music
2. I dare to make new connections with people I respect and look up to
3. I dare to never stop learning
4. I dare to have more fun!
Now, get daring!
Hello guys!
Last night I was feeling truly inspired when I wrote this Dare. I apologize for not confirming with Alien before posting but I don't know what came over me! I've always wanted to start a Dare and the timing seemed perfect so I went for it.
I'm happy you guys like the concept so far and am more than willing to hear if you have any additions or notes. afleetingspeck, I know you had a similar idea for a Dare so if there's anything you'd like to add or touch on, I'd love to hear what you think. We can kick off the New Year with some amazing new work!

I dare to start my own Music Label.
As for the rest, I'll dare to make samples and songs to get this done soon.
am I doing it right???
Here are my daresolutions!
1. I daresolve to identify my shortcomings and find solutions for them.
2. I daresolve to be more efficient in life.
3. I daresolve to not give up on music no matter how much I feel like being hit by "the musician's block," and to that effect make at least one track per month.
4. I daresolve to dare. And then some.
The song will be made, and each element of the song will be uploaded on freesound before the end of the month. Thanks for the dare!
A wise teacher told me back in february that we were entering the year of the snake . . . the snake in the grass to be more specific and the grass represents a wilderness. The wilderness is like a blank page, a clean space. The start of a new chapter. This was an important year (as is every year, for time is not something you can save up to spend later, you can only use it wisely right now)
He urged us to create something.
We live in a time where it is easy to write the world off as beyond saving. A time where it's easy to know what to do but so easy to give up saying "the world's gone to sh*te anyway" He urged us to stick to our morals in such times.
I resolved to create a wilderness in my mind and heart to give the good seeds a space to grow. The speaker told us that we must believe in the new and good world for it grow.
This year has tested me in many ways and I have kept these words in mind. Not just to use more patience and tolerance and love with people and testing situations, to wait a little and think and allow my quiet thinking heart to have a voice, but to also try not to get too wrapped up in the darkness.
In this life there will be pain, tension, trials, fear, outrage. There will be miracles and marvels and joy.
I resolve to acknowledge the bad seeds but not nourish them and never make excuses for them.
I resolve to nurture the goodness and imagine and strive towards a better future for the world.
I will never stop learning and never stop having fun.
I will appreciate the little things in life and give thanks everyday.
I will accept pain as an inevitable part of life but strive to keep suffering to a minimum.
I will be grateful for the life lessons I experience.
I will try and live each day as if it were my whole life.
How to express this feeling through a piece of music/sound I'm not sure but I dare myself to try!
Thanks for the great dare and for allowing me to share these thoughts.
I have started penning down lyrics to my song, breaking my tradition of starting with a groove and adding everything else later.
Let me tell you, this is incredibly hard for me. If I do get this one done, mojomills must get the biggest thanks of the new year for making me do this.
@Halph-Price: Yes and how exciting! My best advice: do a LOT of reading and even more talking to folks who've started an indie label from the ground up. There's tons of people out there who can help. Good luck!
@afleetingspeck: The "musicians block" is very real. I find when I'm having mental constipation, I change up my routine. Sometimes going to a show or simply taking a walk in a new part of town is all it takes. I always run into trouble when I try to force it. A little breather goes a long way. Your daresolutions are commendable and all I can say is, I dare you!
@luckylittleraven: Your post is beautifully written and I thank you for sharing your insights. Your teacher is wise indeed. When we create, we thrive. It can be difficult to feel artistically motivated when your world is chaotic. Luckily, as humans, we find patterns and comfort ourselves in the intrinsic beauty within the shapes and sounds that surround us. When things are out of our control, simple tasks can seem impossible. The only way to find that line again is to become stronger and overcome the pains of life. Your post is genuine and heartfelt and I think that takes a lot of guts! Whether you put it into a song or not, you have already succeeded.
As for me, I have fortunately been very busy this last two months. I am producing a play and finding independent work as a mixer for live events. I say fortunately for myself, but not for my promise to produce a piece for this dare. I have many ideas I'm still thrilled to work out, so I've not given up on it! I realize we are well into the new year, but the message I hope to convey is that New Year's resolutions are not only for the new year, but for the years to come. So, keep up the good work everyone and keep an eye on the forums! Happy New Year!

The New Year is still young!
I am sure it will bring a lot of dares to all of us (and I don't mean just the Freesound dares).
I have also been too busy to participate, but not too busy to think about this.
Often I have put work first, before every other thing in my life.
I need to dedicate more time to my family and to myself.
We are sharing wise men thoughts here, and a General Manager of a company I once worked for said: "of the many things people say in their death bed, no one has ever said 'I wish I had spent more time at the office'."
I have a few things to achieve in my private life this year, but I will skip those...
What do I want to achieve in music?
One thing I am definetely going to do this year is to do more collaborations. - Because they are so much fun, because I learn a lot and because the results are so great!
I need to try more new things. Over the years, I have bought a lot of little gadgets and trinckets - I need to make sure I use these things. I have no shortage of ideas...
Learning a bit of music theory might also not go amiss. Lets see if there is time for that also.
And then of course, ther eis painting...
But I digress.
My dare to you all, Freesounders, is a long-term one:
Lets meet here again at the end of 2014 and review our (musical) achievements !
