Dear Freesounders
I have been so busy that the first month of 2014 almost past before I came here to post a new dare!
Since it is too late for Jan, this dare will have a posting deadline of 28/Feb/2014, at ~11pm GMT time.
The initial purpose of the dares was to celebrate how great Freesound is. That theme is now more actual than ever as we have seen some new features and capabilities introduced in the last few months.
So, this time, we go to a typical dare setup and make a few changes to test and introduce you all to one of the new functionalities: "find similar sounds".
Here's if you want to know more:
http://blog.freesound.org/?p=459
Dare rules:
1) I will collect 5 sounds of the day and post them on this thread.
2) You cannot actually use the sounds I post. Instead you must go to each sound page and click "similar sounds" (found below the sound technical details on the right side of the page, under the download button)
3) You can use any of the similar sounds shown on that page. You can use more than one, if you like.
4) Give something back! You must listen very carefully to the first 5 similar sounds and compare them with the original sound and post your comments here on how similar or different they are from the query sound. (See my example below as a separate post on this thread)
You must do this for the 5 sounds of the day. Without this, your entry will not be considered. You can post this together with your submission or as a separate post.
5) You can apply effects to the sounds you use, but they must still be recognizeable.
You can use other sounds, recorded instruments or virtual instruments in addition to the Freesound sounds.
Duration between 2min and 4min.
Collabs are allowed.
6) Post on this thread before the deadline of 28/Feb/2014, 11pm GMT to submit your entry.
Your post must contain a link to the actual piece submitted on Soundcloud.
You MUST attribute (i.e., give credit) to the samples used in the Soundcloud page.
7) For questions or anything related to this dare which is not an entry use the discussion thread.

Example of how to comment on 'similar sounds'
Why am I asking you to do this?
Because I think it will be interesting to compare the assessment of how similar the sounds are done by humans with the results of the algorithm that Freesound uses to classify sounds as similar.
Note: you may not be able to post links to the sounds (could trigger spam filters), so best to identify each sound by its number. The sound # is on the address of your browser when you are on the sound page, it is also on the sound name when you download the file.
Query sound #203148 Heavy metal loop - As described.
1st similar sound - # 158261 - not similar. This sounds like a machine.
2nd simillar sound - # 211705 - more or less similar. Musical sound with chords and lots of overlaped and distorted sounds including cymbals.
3rd similar sound - # 165004 - not similar. This is just one hit of a heavily distorted kick drum. Duration is very short comapred with query sound.
4th similar sound - # 111603 - Not similar. This is an airport announcement. Lots of noise, people moving, chatting, etc and voice announcements from the loudspeakers.
5th similar sound - # 86841 - a little bit similar. Contains at least rhythmic elements and is heavily distorted.
Query sound # 181110 (Tuna Pasta Stirring In Bowl) - slushy and squishy wet sounds.
1st similar sound - # 173304 - Not similar. Sound of striking a match. Duration is very short compared with query sound.
2nd similar sound - # 154661 - Similar! Contains wet and squishy sounds!
3rd similar sound - # 172958 - Not similar. This is a short bussing sound. Duration is too short compared with query sound.
4th similar sound - # 173305 - Another match strike. Duration is very short.
5th similar sound - # 193955 - Sound of hitting a key on a typewritter. Too short compared with query sound.
