Dear Friends,
I have been less active than usual at Freesound because I am on holiday back in Portugal.
The good news is that I found a fairly decent quality AM receiver that I used to have. All I need now is some batteries.
I have been uploading some of my previous recordings from the Twente university radio receiver website.
Also here a request: Anyone finding/recording number stations?
Here is one I found whilst browsing the Twente university site:
8992kHz. Transmits with a USA accent and these are apparently USA airforce coded messages.
Unfortunately looks like a set of batteries had been left inside the receiver. This has been untouched for 10 years or longer and the batteries have burst, causing damage. The receiver no longer works.
On the good news side, I have just uploaded some number station recordings:

Hi all, at long last I've gotten around to it. here are about 20 or so sounds I recorded on the Twente receiver last weekend, all but one are from the 20 and 40 meter Amateur bands at 14 and 7 mhz. Most feature wide band captures of multiple stations on different frequencies at once, transmitting in various digital and voice modes. Not the way one would commonly listen, but great for some crazy noises. A few straight voice recordings, some deliberately out of tune. There's also a brief dual-frequency synchronized stereo recording of Radio España.
I often recorded the same frequency in 3 different modes sequentially. Each has it's own characteristic reception of signals in other modes.
So here's the packEnjoy. Maybe I'll get around to some more next week.
I like the sci-fi flavour of your "perhaps jt65 on 18102.5kHz USB.wav", good take!

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to hearing your sounds. And thanks for the flowers.

I'm playing this way, lot of fun. Micro adjustement in waterfall max zoomin (Twente tuner), to find a constant note and modulate it, or find nearer voices to catch a quasi-choir. (19 samples waiting moderation).I like the sci-fi flavour of your "perhaps jt65 on 18102.5kHz USB.wav", good take!

Twente tuner is fun!
I freely played with it while recording, hope it's useful:

peculiar samples: 7-8-9 (cascades of notes) and 18-19 (like choirs).
I'll look for more noises with clearer sound aspect, and longer samples with smooth changes in tones
have fun

from 1966 to 1969 Karlheinz Stockhausen worked on national hymns: this work ended as "Hymnen"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymnen
part of the material was on tape, recorded from radio. This video

is interesting even if 'fake': visualization is modern and uses music spectrum.
Anyway the music is the original as recorded on Lp.

Hi cajo
Thanks for joining the dare. That is the spirit!
Your pack contains some interesting sounds.
Also thank you for the link to Stockhausen's piece. He was a pionier.
Basically, this is not only an early work featuring radio noises, but effectively also an early use of "sampling" (albeit onto tape), since there are snippets of music recorded from the radio embeded in Stockhausen's piece.
Dare 28 moves to level 2
and there is a surprise...
Check it out

WOW... whats going on here!! I go on holiday and almost miss all the fun!
Hey AlienXXX... can you please send me a message if you start something interesting like this??
You know I like this stuff!!
16 more samples from Twente tuner:
http://www.freesound.org/people/cajo/packs/15042/
most interesting imo:
34 = voice distorted on harmonics, like a vocoder
http://www.freesound.org/people/cajo/sounds/244216/
37 = distorted music, then distorted voice.
http://www.freesound.org/people/cajo/sounds/244219/
both were taken by displacing the center vertical line of the frequency cursor out of the other two diagonal lines: if there's a strong and wide signal then something weird happens:
http://www.caiom.it/fs/tuner1.jpg
with keyboard is possible to shift frequency with regular steps.
I like this long sample by kb7clx where frequency constantly shift:
http://www.freesound.org/people/kb7clx/sounds/243546/
I will look for more vocoder like situations; other kind of radio noises are too common in FS and not so interesting.
have fun
