Hello daring Freesounders !
This is a special mini-dare to help out a fellow Freesounder.
User CadereSounds needs some help converting some sounds into seamless loops.
I figured this might interest some of you and so turned it into a dare.
This is an interesting request because the looped sounds will be used to create a free soundbank for a free VST. - So this is very much along the lines of the recent "support the developers" theme.
Credit will be given for any samples that are selected.
RULES:
These are the sounds that need to be looped:
http://www.freesound.org/people/CadereSounds/packs/16352/
Please use minimal or no effects - only the absolutely needed to transform the sounds into seamless loops.
Upload your loopable sounds to Freesound. Please keep the original sound names the same, sounds should be 24 or 32 bit (if possible). Upload them all as part of one pack called "Dystopia" and use tags "dystopia" and "dare-33".
Would be great if you mention on the description the method you have used to convert the sound to a seamless loop (but this is not mandatory).
Please also post in this thread to inform when you upload the soundpack, and I will try to get them moderated quickly.
User CadereSounds will select the sounds that will be used for the plugin from all sounds that are submitted. If your sounds are selected, you will be credited in the plugin documentation.
DEADLINE: 15-March-2015
Even if you have not created a seamless loop from all the sounds in the original pack, please upload the ones you looped no later than 15-March. IF you upload later, your sounds may no longer be in tme to be considered.
The original post request is here:
http://www.freesound.org/forum/off-topic/36376/
I usually work with flac, but since the destination is a sf2 soundfont, I guess wav is the word.
When I export to flac 24 bit from Audacity, the command line "play" on Linux reports, as expected:
Encoding: FLAC
Channels: 2 @ 24-bit
If I export to wav "32 bit float" (from "other non compressed formats", the standard wav export is the CD-friendly 16 bit), play reports:
play WARN wav: wave header missing extended part of fmt chunk
Encoding: F.P. PCM
Channels: 2 @ 24-bit
The warning alone is enough to make me look for other options, I'd rather avoid potential malfunctions even if only with soundfont player X on daw Y on OS Z...
If I export to wav "Signed 32 bit PCM", play reports:
Encoding: Signed PCM
Channels: 2 @ 32-bit
Should I go with this one?
-- EDIT --
All sounds ready for upload
I've made a loopable version of ... http://www.freesound.org/people/CadereSounds/sounds/265273/
No effects ... http://www.freesound.org/people/Timbre/sounds/265419/
Binaural spin effect ... http://www.freesound.org/people/Timbre/sounds/265418/
@copyc4t - 32-bit seems to be the safest option in your case. Looking forward to the uploads!
@ Timbre - Thank you so much! I'm about to give them a test drive.
Here we go

No FX at all as requested, just the classical cross-fade method; I may try something on the stereo field if you want, and add the alternate versions too.
Awesome. Thanks for your contribution copyc4t! I'll give them a go tonight. You can experiment with the sounds in any way you like. Although, I'm more likely to only use the basic looped versions.
I do plan to make more soundfonts later on this year and will be looking for more creative collaborations. If you like, I can PM you when that time comes and see if you're up for that.

Wow. Fast response on this Dare/Request. I worked a little on the Feeder sound. Hard one. But I'm not 100% satisfied.
Thanks fellas! I will put your freesound name and link/s in the file. If there is any other specific credit info you would like to have on the soundbank's 'readme' txt - feel free to say so soon.

Just an update - The "Dystopian" Sf2 loops are now posted on the Westgate Sounds site. Entitled 'Dystopian Terra by Ridan'
Ridan is my KVR name. Don't worry!
And of course credit has been given in the folder.
I've just published a video tutorial showing the simple workflow I've used for this Dare:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiwC05zMaFw
...on a side note, I've tried to mark my sounds as remixes of CadereSounds' originals, but only one retained the information correctly; of course I've done the same steps on them all, I've also tried again on just a few of them, but the information gets lost. I've never had issues with that before.
