Hello Fresounders !
I should not be surprised, considering the focus of this community, that my recording dares have proved to be more popular than my musical ones
So, since you seem to like them, here is another challenge for you:
Record your hard-drive.
Must include the tag "dare-51"
Don't just record and upload to Freesound - Make sure you tag it properly. We love (relevant) tags!
We would like brand, model and RPM.
And we would like different sounds too: spin up, spin down, stand-by, idle, read/write... (they can all be collated in a single file, if you prefer)
Extra geek points for:
- FLOPPY DRIVE recordings
- Faulty drive recordings
- Does anyone still have a tape drive???
and, to make sure we are not excluding anyone, we also accept recordings of CD and DVD drives. Make sure you describe and tag them as such.
The challenge starts now and ends 30-Sep-2017.
Happy recording!
I thought I had a DIY contact mic somewhere, but I did not find it. But I found another thing. A contact mic for an instrument tuner. But (again) it had a 1/4 inch mono plug. That meant I could not connect it to my computer mic in. But (I know) what if I plug it in to my modular synth. Surprise... Then I could add a little filter, pan and spring reverb. So clamped the mic on to my external 3,5 inch disc drive and recorded.

If this sound reaches 10 downloads I send 100 SEK to the Red Cross.
I someone uses it in a track and up load un YT I promise to do 100 push ups...
First dare
My good old Toshiba MQ01UBD100 2.5" 1TB external hdd. 5400rpm.
Spin-up, some access noise while clicking random direcories and a great final "CLICK!!" after the plug was pulled.
Recorded using a contact mic attached with a screw clamp. Left some marks but it was worth it
An electroacoustic excerpt made from the sound of inserting/ejecting a zip disc. Remember them?! This is pretty lo-fi. Cut to the midway point where the noisy fun starts if you like...
