Actually, if you look at the popular searches in the last 7 days, it gives you some hints:
wind 1489 thunder 1421 scream 1402 rain 1395 gun 1193 Explosion 1177 bell 1073 car 1032 crowd 986 sex 959 water 934 phone 910 bass 883 fart 865 piano 848 guitar 792 fire 775 train 742 drum 739 beep 730 alarm 729 horror 726 telephone 716 dog 705 SIREN 701 crash 679 door 675 radio 664 cat 634 birds 633 laugh 626 VOICE 596 scratch 590 drums 571 record scratch 551 heartbeat 541 footsteps 538 storm 537 kick 537 applause 521 snare 508 scary 503 bird 498 click 497 clock 496 forest 492 ring 482 horn 478 ambient 471 trumpet 465 music 446 sonar 443 gong 442 horse 433 violin 432 traffic 422 bomb 419 camera 413 heart 407 glass 406 sea 398 ocean 396 vocal 384 Bells 383 war 382 space 381 nature 374 punch 373 chant 372 city 354 children 354 whistle 351 police 348 engine 348 static 346 loop 344 laser 343 thunderstorm 341 beat 336 orgasm 335 metal 330 sword 330 clap 326 hit 322 techno 316 phone ring 314
I think more things COULD be added. "Favorites" would be great, featured sample(packs) would be great, ... But the problem is time: while I can implement these features, someone else would have to fill them in. Perhaps I should really start gathering a pool of enthused freesound users and organize tasks better...

... 336 orgasm 335 metal ...
hock:
I wonder who made that field recording...

Yeah, that is not a bad idea Bram. I guess there are enough people who would like to contribute. Count me in anyway.
If you see this sample:

it´s really a technical accident, an overload. I put it on the side just for academic interests. Anyway, there are 40 downloads since 2 weeks. Sometimes you cannot estimate what the users want

i had to comment on this, there is no such thing as a uselss sound, i am working on a song with a rapper, and in his vocal between verses he takes a short breath, i copied that tiny fragment and edited it with reverb and other effects and put it on every second snare beat, the effect is stunning, it not only adds interest to the song but also creates atmosphere, and thats just a tiny segment of a sound i would have noemally disgarded for being useless, i think sites like these are worth their weight in gold and the people who put it together should be applauded, you have my gratitude
Michael
I think it's kinda funny... i love the random sample function and really get tired of field recordings (i have plenty wind and rain and don't want any more) .... but as others have said, just narrow your search to whatever u want... I think EVERYONE who downloads should upload at least one sample and NO ONE should complain about the sounds unless they want a bunch of audio-nerds to bludgeon them repeatedly till they die.
"what someone throws away for others can be a treasure"
Hey, I'm an audio nerd too -you'd be bloudgeoning one of your own.
just to clarify, I did not say anything was useless. I said some sounds were less useful.
I'm saying that some sounds are like electro-acoustic compositions, not sounds. We dont have music on here do we? (actually, I am being a hipocrit again, becuase I upload at least 2 ambient music files [copyright free of course ]) I'm just differentiating between 'sounds' and 'compositions' )ie heavily edited/processed sounds that are not discernable in their nature, but layer upon layer of mad warbling FM static interspersed with pulsar trainlets from a cat being sick.
But surely some of you can see what I'm saying? There is many 'experimental' sounds that I feel deserve the tag 'experimental' or something. Just an idea. I like pulsar trainlet cat sick - I just want to be able to block it out sometimes when I'm searching.
Anyhow, as it currently stands the site is a unique resource of the upmost excellence I thank you all

Neally 95% of all sounds are total useless!
Hey, I got my very own "not very useful" comment for this one! And s/he said it was vulgar too!
Me TOO! They have a problem with a text to speech sample that they think has obscenities... I smell a wackjob!
I agree with all those who've pointed out that one person's USELESS is another's TREASURE. As they say, one man's FISH is another man's POISSON (a little French joke, there). But seriously, to the original poster, I'm reminded of a joke my father used to tell. A chap goes to the doctor & says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do *this* (closes his fist)" The doctor replies, "Don't Do That!"I think the answer's *that* simple. If the original poster doesn't appreciate certain sounds, or the entire project, why doesn't he "not do that."?

Well, I certainly see no credit or even mention to the "freeware" you used to produce that one.
If they only found a problem with one of my sounds that's a pretty good average. Analog X "Sayit" and "Melody Assistant" are the only freeware TTS I use. I have noticed that the people who make the most fuss over the sounds have uploaded ZERO... maybe they should stop griping, grab a mic and record something... And to reiterate about the usefullness of the useless sounds. Go to Yahoo, not google for some reason, and search "noisecollector" you will see dozens and dozens of games, films, songs, etc. that use my useless noises. Not everyone is here for the same reason.
Oh, and I finally tried the quote feature...
Bram
walter, nothing is stopping you from tagging sounds with "experimental".
as an uploader you have the right to tag sounds from other people.- bram
ah, excellent. I'm just gonna go tag the sound I deem experimental, see you all in 8 years. Can one of you double check my reclassificatons...
Noise Collector et al, I take your points
Say - If I was recording a tree dying would I have to aquire the brand of seed from which it grew? Or if a badger that had been tagged by the wildlife association farted during the recording, would I have to give due credit? Just a bit of fun. Indeed credit is due when deserved/required.
That said, a place/means of finding ambience recordings (ie field recordings) as opposed to synthesised ambient sounds would be useful. It can be a little frustrating when plagued by latter in a search. That said however, this is Freesound, and that's a whole lot of goodness in this world, and desirables can be found with patience and a little tact (whatever that is). And I've just discovered Geotag, it just gets better
By the way, being able to add tags to the sounds of others is excellent - didn't mean to come across patronising
credit the badger farts I say - I love it when a sound has a story

Why upload a TTS sample when one can easily type and get the same result with the available program? The neglect to mention what the program was in the sample description and the like is kinda iffy.
Why judge a person's experience by the "sounds added"? Maybe I don't want my sounds available under a license I don't agree with. (which is a completely different story)

Hi there.
Is not like it's really happening, but just as a remembering, please keep the discussion out of flame wars dimensions.
Flame wars, you know, when the discussion starts to get personal, instead of a collaborative effort to reach new knowledge.
Thank you very much.
Freesound loves ye all.
