Please:
(1) Are the sounds classified by type and nature anywhere, not only by username? What is the head link to the library of sound files? (I know by experience that search by word is unreliable; e.g. I am looking for a hobnailed boot footstep on concrete, but text-search for "boot" trawls up much by-catch: computer boot-up noises, submarine noises (via the German submarine film 'Das Boot').)
(2) What equipment do I need (portable, usable out of doors) to record a noise onto a .WAV file, and then get that noise onto a computer? I have a Finepix digital camera. If I used that with audio (if it can record audio well or at all), it would likely record the movie onto a .MPG file; what software would I need to pull its soundtrack off onto a .WAV file? (I have VirtualDub and GoldWave.)

advanced search "boot -submarine" to exclude 'Das Boot' ,
BTW movie soundtracks aren't permitted on Freesound unless they're out of copyright ...

You'll have to install the LAME mp3 encoder if you want Audacity to export audio in mp3 format,
However Freesound prefers contributions to be uncompressed formats like WAV, or lossless compression formats, rather than lossy compession formats like mp3.
Is there anything portable that can record a sound directly onto a .WAV file?

Using your video camera as a sound recording device is worth a try, but don't expect top quality results ... http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=23269
