There are times at which it takes ages to browse around, I guess the server is lately under heavier load than it used to be, and wonder what's the [EDIT: alltime maximum] number of simultaneous users recorded, Bram? With 50 users logged in and > 200 guests is right now quite impressive:
Unfortunately a lot of those guests are bots from different big websites and search engines. In a lot of forums that list the guests, the forum will actually tell you which website bot is browsing the site.

EDIT: Most users ever online was 537 on Sat Dec 30, 2006 10:45 pm
for various technical reasons the server is suffering lately.... however, there's a new guy at MTG (greg, say hi!!) who is working very steadily towards a big update of the server soft (internally). once that is done it'll all go smoother. we're also getting a second machine for the database, which will help a lot...

Hi all,
I'm the new guy Bram mentioned in the above post who is working on these performance problems. Basically, in the short term we're hoping that making some changes in the way the freesound back-end works will allow us to get better performance using the server we have. And in the medium term we're hoping to find some mirrors to help host the audio files. So, hopefully by the end of the month you'll start seeing some performance improvements, and hopefully towards the end of the spring, freesound will start really kicking ass again once we find some mirrors.
Greg

yesterday i figured out what was killing freesound: googlebot!
it was crawling thousands of pages @ freesound!
so, i made some changes and everything should be a bit better now.
I hope it'll stop destroying the database performace soon, but killing access to google seems like a really bad idea, so let's sit tight and wait for it to lose interest!

I had an image in my mind of the sentinels from the matrix, crawling all over the sounds.
glad you're fixing it bram man. keep up the good work!
