Hi Freesound,
My girlfriend and I are looking for recordists for a project. We're going to be having our first kid in the coming days. We'd like to capture the sound of earth on that very day so s/he can hear what the world was doing on the day they arrived in it. Perhaps not earth but at least a few tiny slices of it.
The basic plan is this: On the day the kid decides to join us on the other side, we'll send out a message. From that point, anyone participating has 24 hours to capture the sound of their world (mundane is very ok). Any format, any length. After capture, the files get uploaded to the site we've set up (or directly to freesound with a tag of some sort so that I might collect them to archive for the kid?). Mailing a cd/tape/dat is fine too. All recordings will be available on the site for anyone to enjoy.
We're open to suggestions. If you'd like to participate, please visit http://soundofthatday.com to sign up to be notified on 'the day'. We hope you'll record something.
The tackiness of this being my first actual forum post isn't lost on me. Thanks for understanding. If you have any questions, please ask.
Thank you,
Will
Wow what a great idea! I can't think of a better way to welcome someone to this planet. Count me in!
Beautiful idea
I'm going to be away most of xmas, but if I'm around I'd love to contribute.
So do count me in.
Simon
wow. thanks everyone.
hammerklavier, any device will do. cell phone, computer mic... most of the people signed up right now are not recordists and I expect a good number of them will be sending in horribly recorded cell phone clips. We're totally cool with that.
ERH, I will try to post here when it happens but I'm not sure that I'll be in a state to notify everyone when the kid comes. We're having a home birth so mama and baby will be my only focus. That's why I made the site so I can send a single broadcasted notification and get back to what matters quickly. I can just hear it, "get off that fucking computer!" http://soundofthatday.com We'll not use your addy for anything else! alternatively, I've set up a twitter account which can be followed via RSS. https://twitter.com/soundofthatday or the direct RSS feed @ http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/11204512.atom
Again, big preesh to all.
Will
Fully understand - you will be preoccupied somewhat on THE DAY. I have not forgotten the feeling - my eldest was born December 7th 1980 and I will remember it always and that of my second son in 1983. So you know what you are in for here is a picture of my 2 "babies" last year. They were in India doing just what I did at their age - travelling just for the thrill.
We are all with you in some small way.

Happy to report that mama and baby are doing great. I missed getting the announcement out by a day because I couldn't get on the internerd so the project has morphed into 'sound of the next few days' If you were recording something sat, sun or monday, please share it with us. Drum loops, interviews, street recordings... we don't care.
We had a 7.3lb, 22" girl. She has no name yet because we wanted to meet her first.
Thanks to all who signed up and to anyone who has a minute to share some sound.
Will

I'd suggest you keep an eye on the geo-tag sound area and download the samples that appear there on the day? That will also allow you to save GPS coordinates and an image.

Congratulations Will! Best of luck with your project and I'll try to take a moment to put together something for you.
Thank you everyone! I thought it would be rough but sleepless life is pretty great. better than any all night drug of which I've ever had the pleasure.
digifish, that's a great idea - thank you.
Right now, the uploaded recordings are just in list form. Trying to find the time to tie it together with Google Maps. I'm lucky in that my job is allowing me to work from home as we can't afford both of us to be out of work (man I wish I lived in europe right now). I do web development for a living so after 8 hours of it all I really have time for is spending time with baby and mama. Eventually it will happen...
Thinking about doing this annually. Now that I have the kinks worked out, why not? She arrived on the solstice so it might be interesting to others in the future.
Thank you,
Will
