Hello,
As a user of freesound I have found several issues with the interface which I think should be addressed. So, I wanted to see what other users think about these issues, to see if they are general issues or just things that bother me. If I see that there is wide support about these issues, I will try to contact the people in charge to see if something can be done.
The two most pertinent issues are of search bar visibilty and result ordering:
1. Search bar visibility:
ISSUE:when you enter freesound (as a logged in user) the search bar is not visible. You only see it if you pres this little red icon in the top right corner, which is not at all clear. Freesound is a community, but for me it is primarily a sound search engine, and having a small link to the search option on the side menu or an icon on the top right doesn't seem enough. Then, when the results come up, going into the page for a specific sound means the main search bar is lost again.
SUGGESTION: To have a "google-like" approach where the search bar is ALWAYS present in a visible place on the page.
2. Result ordering:
ISSUE:when searching for a sound, the results are returned in order of newley added (i think). This means that the results on the first page are quite often not at all relevant. To get relevant results you need to re-order the results (probably by most downloaded). But this option is "hidden", i.e. the ordering options only appear if you click the reordering link. This might be fine for frequent users or advanced users, but if you think about the "average" user, they will search, find nothing relevant on the first page and go somewhere else. I think you can compare it to Google returning search results by most recently added webpage and having an optional "order by pagerank" link.
SUGGESTION: Order results by what is likely to be most relevant to the user by default. As an initial heuristic, this would be by number of downloads (popularity).
So - please vote in the poll to show your opinion, and feel free to include more detailed opinions in a reply to this post. NOTE: the poll is about whether you agree that these are issues that should be addressed - the solutions don't have to be the ones I have proposed in this post.
Thanks!
