It is very helpful for any kind of work I do. Alternative radio pieces, low budget short films, independent theatre fx, educational workshops...

Not at all, except the archive itself, wich is a lot!! In fact, I think that's one of the best features of freesound.

I feel there is an effort to become an active archive, in the sense that the feeling I have as a user, is inviting me constantly to reuse this sounds, and not to just consume them. It seems to me more focused on the archive than into the individual files, wich erases automatically any individual driven project in favor of the collective side of the project. And that's really great. If one the main ideas behind web 2.0 was to create and share free tools for users to somehow "provoke" creativity, you really did it. Thanks for that.

I feel that there is a sense of community, but I don't think it's personal enough to know if there are any shared goals. Honestly, I'd like to keep it that way.

Anything that's decent quality I'll download for either current projects, or in hopes of using it sometime in the future. Mostly short sounds effects or long ambiances though.

I like how you can rate and comment on sounds which gives it a slight social networking feel because you can have ongoing communication if you wish. Also, it's easy to download the files and compliment the creator. One things that I would REALLY LOVE to see would be a download link directly on the list of search matches. If there is one I don't know where it is, but it would be really handy. Thanks for a great website guys!

It is a good basis to search for specific sounds and also a great inspiration for material to experiment with.
Looping sounds and processing them further is great fun.

Don't have any specific preferences. Artificially created sounds or environmental sounds can be fascinating. I personally would like to hear the sound of a gigantic ship propeller stroke with different mallets -full decay of course -.

There is a huge variety of sounds and digging in the depths can be fun. It's free and mostly of very good quality.

post samples of the sounds of my sound journeys and journal. find sounds of other people's journeys as well as everyday life. i use it to look for references on how to tag and classify samples and to find similar sounds/taxonomies to the ones i have posted.

yes. high quality of organization/information about the samples. i trust that in freesound i can find high quality sounds with truthfull definitions as well as different types of recordings such as binaural, contact microfone, etc.

long term goals? well, i think maybe there could be a focus on education, articles, writings by the users, workshops. oh, and i would like to bring a workshop/lecture of freesound to brazil whenever possible and be (well maybe already are) a contributor of spreading the freesound culture. not as much about the softwares and the gear used but the achivements and listening culture.

i try to upload samples of everyday sounds of my home town as well as trips i take, try to be ethnographic some how. download, usually everyday sounds that sometimes i need like foley sounds. sometimes i look for fx sounds as well, searching for the tags and timbers/colors of the sound according to projects im working on.

i think freesound is exactly what its named after. free sounds, any sound. the other are mostly about music.

I have joined the dares a few times now, and there is a really nice "community" there. People comment on each other in a nice way, giving tips and pointers.

I dont know, but I like freesound, its really simple and the sounds are great!

My church buys scripts from 252basics.org. These scripts constantly ask for special effect. Using pieces I find here, or that I contribute from my own recordings, I assemble one-of-a-kind effects tuned especially for our live weekend sketches. These are mainly foley types of sounds (incidental noises).

As long as people post effects that have some obvious re-use value, I find that there is a good community. My most popular effects, some of which have over 700 downloads, are constantly getting comments, but usually they are pretty thin comments ("Thanks for the track"), which are great, but don't add any value above what I got from my altruistic effort during recording and upload.

Foleys are key for me. I like a lot of the loops, even though I've never mixed anything with them. Most of my stuff I've uploaded has been things like blocks falling down over various conditions, masking tape being unrolled, metallic banging on a washing machine to use cumulatively in a washing-machine-gone-wild montage. Stuff I've downloaded are baby's crying, dogs whimpering, rain/thunder storms, electricity zapping, cityscape environmental sounds (skateboard park). I also enjoyed the somewhat cheese crowd effects your team organized a couple of years back. Clean copies of audiences clapping, laughing, and booing have been essential to me since real recording of these invariably have a performer stomping on the crowd.

I hadn't heard of those sites until now. What continues to draw me to freesound is the clear licensing requirements and the seriousness with which that is pursued. I repeatedly get private messages asking permission to use material that the license clearly permits (with attribution), but apparently people don't want to read and think about licenses. I do.

The other discriminator for me is that a lot of people take pride in the quality of their sound and the equipment they use to record it. I know that there is a geotagging effort under way, and while that may be useful for some things, I find that a lot of what is here is synthetic. Still, I think it would be neat to know a sound's entomology for synthetically generated effects (software + plugins, instruments used as source or modifiers) and actual recordings (microphone, capture device, type of post-processing, indoor/outdoor, staged/unscripted). The entomology of highly-rated sounds could provide guidance to new users, would help vendors boast about their product, and would establish baselines to keep overall site content quality high. Encourage anyone with more than 500 downloads on an effect or patch set to complete a survey. Tie the survey responses into well-formed tags.

Most of it is used in conjunction with sound for film and tv - not professionally, but for my studies. The foley and sound effects are what I use most.

1) What do you use Freesound for? I produce a show (podcast) called Blind Fly Theater. I come to Freesound for sound effects, drones, etc... just about anything that will add suspense, creepiness, or otherwise elicit an emotional response from our listeners.

I've used Freesound for about 1.5 years (under my current username and previous "sparklemirror") and I've never quite been able to figure out just what kind of community it is. We always credit Freesound and specific FS artists within the episode in the ending credits.

For me, SoundCloud is a place for (mostly musical) artists to post works-in-progress and completed pieces, and to collaborate with and support other artists. I see Freesound as a box of pieces from which to cull samples for works. That seems a bit selfish now that I've typed it. If you have any suggestions on how I could become more productive and collaborative in Freesound, I'm open. I love Freesound. I want to see you flourish and grow. Freesound holds a very special spot in my heart.

In FS I've found polite and cooperative persons, more than in other sharing sites: the main goal seems to help and to share informations about sounds.
The community seem to be made of a little core of active users and a changing peripheral mass of silent users. I feel friction between givers and takers, but there is enough fatalism to keep sharing and helping.
I noticed FS users are more shy than in social networks, many profiles are empty. Possible reasons: focusing on technical aspects, average age, presence of spammers, language problems.

One interesting long-term goal could be the quest and definition for new licenses, a main topic in the digital era.
Another possible goal is to promote FS as the ear of the web: anything = wikipedia / video = yt, vimeo / image = flickr / sound = Freesound. It could be wanderful to have a sound search engine by MTG

I haven't really contributed to the community yet, but because I began music with absolutely nothing, I hope that, one day, it'll be easy for beginners to find quality samples.

Some instruments are really difficult to find on the web for free, like orchestral drums or percussive sound designs... And it's exactly what I'm searching for.

The samples here are not only loops, but also single notes, which are more useful IMO to make music. There is also more content than Looperman, and on Soundcloud, I haven't found many samples yet. Also, it's free.

Yes, very bread-headed, but after nearly 20,000 downloads of one of my samples, I feel that something used so popular could be paying me a little something back, particularly since I'm never going to earn much as a musician/performer.

I use Freesound to get audio recordings for film and video projects, and in return I share audio recordings I have made that other film sound designers may want to use.

I don't feel like there's a tight community, but I do appreciate when people who download and use my sounds thank me for them. I feel connected to those people. I think we have a shared goal of sharing royalty-free sound recordings with other people like ourselves.

I am most interested in soundscapes of real places, such as factories, or parks, or city streets, or apartment buildings. Secondarily, I am interested in sounds of real world things, such as telephone ring tones, automobiles, birds, gunshots, etc.

I love the "sound community" thing!!!!! I never uploaded sounds(i'm a leecher ), but I've contributed through money donations...it's important to keep the site alive and well...

I'm interested in ambiances, specific local ambiances, for example got some very useful samples for a project I'm working on about Brazil, but everything goes, from synth zaps and whooshes, drum samples to some guys playing football somewhere in Holland!!!!

for my line of work, it's the bees knees!!!! the other are more focused in music...I find myself using less and less my sound ideas collection, even if the sounds have more "quality", the sounds that I find here are much more life like, ideal for tv work.
