Hello everyone,
thank you very much for all your responses!
They are all of great relevance, not only for our research but also to capture and better understand the great Freesound spirit that we're all building sound after sound! This will help us to continue improving Freesound!
We will very soon inform in the blog about the research we carried on. Further responses in this thread will not be included in the "results" of the research, but feel free to continue posting your thoughts about Freesound if you feel like!
Again, thank you very much!
the Freesound team
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use the samples for new musical works and for remixes of existing works.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
There is a sense of community in that everyone can contribute easy-to-find and easy-to-use samples of just about every sound you can imagine.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I download field recordings, voice recordings and all kinds of specific sounds, but not any music or beats. I upload almost nothing
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Freesound is less focused on music and more focused on found sounds.
1) I search for raw audio samples. Sometimes just to play around with, but I have also used them for sound effects in films.
2) I see it as a place to share audio that wouldn't otherwise have a relevant platform. The sense of community is created just through a shared love of listening (in my humlbe opinion).
3) Mostly mono recordings. Vocals. Foley. Not so much the edited sounds.
4) This is one of the only sites to share unedited sound, without the need to call it "music". It's a fantastic resource, and always my first choice when searching for samples.
1) for my own musical productions and in the past for university projects.
2) i think there is definitely a sense of community, perhaps the goal is half contributing to something larger than yourself, and to show that things can be free.
3) all sorts, never really use pre-made synths / compositions / beats etc, more field recordings and one-shots.
4) obviously that it's free, and thus unaffected by the cookie cutter culture than money brings - people upload sounds because they are proud of them, not because they think they will sell.
i love freesound!
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) Mostly my in-house voicemail auto-attendants.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) Hmmm... Cannot say.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) Bells, chimes, nature, odd sound effects, etc.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) Haven't used the other sites. I was originally attracted by price and no worries licensing.
1)
I mostly use Freesound to share the bests sounds I have... sometimes (in a few case) to look for a sound I'm looking for.
A good place to exchange sound...
2)
I think a lot of users in Freesound are "sound-lovers", so am I... maybe this interest is for different reasons, but it's not important...
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I'm interested in beautiful sound and atmosphere, to listen sounds as they could be music...
It's free, without advertising, and a really collaborative project!
Thanks a lot!
Félix
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I'm a producer, I make music with the samples.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Definitely a community. I'm a bit of a taker, I haven't really given anything back to the community (I intend to in the future) but there are so many people who upload sounds solely for others to use. I think that's the definition of community.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...
So far I've mostly used it for just random sounds that I couldn't really get myself. But I have found a few music instrument samples that worked really well for me.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Seems like the sense of community.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Machinima videos
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
I just found the site after searching desperately for a few sounds and voices. I like what I see (and, of course, hear) very much.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I love sound effects for my videos, and really would love some male voice samples soon. I have always done some voice work myself (female), but my recordings are a bit crap right now. Need a new set up and I'll download for you.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
sense of community and open to fun... what I see so far anyway.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use freesound in my research work, in which I explore non-narrative sound as a documentary medium, amongst other things...
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
I think there are shared interests - as to shared goals, this is less clear. There is sometimes a sense of community - I've collaborated with and been helped significantly by other members. As far as long-term goals go, it may be that he material contained within freesound may dictate these.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Concrete, object based sounds. I have a particular interest in aircon units. Specific places - in my case museums and galleries.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
It seems, in my limited experience, more concerned with sounds as discrete entities, rather than 'organised' or composed. It's a good place to search for specific sounds.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
mainly for education film projects
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
it always seems a very friendly community - more like vimeo
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
they are all great
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
don't use any of these - but find the sounds infinitely better than the other sound sites i do use - sounddogs etc
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I use it to create music to put onto videos on youtube.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Unsure of what the question is asking.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Dubstep, sounds with a good beat. At the moment i am doing a radio project that i need to find sounds for, this site is perfect (-:

The community.

WE EAT GOATES. ALL GOAT LOVERS, MEET ME AT THE GOAT SHOP
1) What do you use Freesound for?
In my professional life, I use it as a teaching tool for student audio production projects. It's a great repository of things they can find quickly and easily. For my personal use, mostly sound effects for video post when my other libraries fail me.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
I don't participate in the community but this site has grown into something really unique over the years. Thanks!
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
I like sound effects, odd/interesting sounds, anything that can be used to make another new and unique sound.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
It isn't about trying to promote anyone or anything. It's not about trying to "make your voice heard". It's not a social network first and a sound collection second. It's a fantastic repository of music samples and sound effects.
1) As a repository for sounds that I have recorded (location recording) or created (synthesis) because of their general usefulness to other artists, sound designers or composers or in the case of location recordings as examples of the common sound environments around me.
2) In some users yes but there appear to be more users than "creators". Which is not in itself a bad thing but the people using freesound for downloads appears to greatly outnumber the uploaders.
3) Unique or hard to record sounds, (wind, animals, weather) or unusual synthetic sounds using granular/convolution techniques.
4) Freesound is about sound. It is a collection that is not bounded by musical concerns but includes that as a class of sounds. It contains sounds that both document various environments and raw material for artists, researchers and sound designers.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) I use it for sound effects for my animations where I haven't been able to record the effect I wanted. Mostly I use the effects downloaded as a starting point and process them further.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) I appreciate the site and will in the future upload sounds that I have created myself - specially if no sound like it is on the site. I do feel that to use the site you should give to it as well as take away.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I have no preferences - whatever the animation/short film requires...
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) I haven't been to the other sites mentioned.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I have used freesound in the past for use in music making in my small home recording studio
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) Although not as yet, I hope one day i can upload a useful sound to share
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I ahve used Birdsong, storms, and explosions
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
It's free, and I am impressed with the care and quality that members achieve when uploading their samples.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
-I use Freesound to categorize and geotag all my publicly available sounds
-In some cases I point my Website or Business cards to my Freesound User Landing page for advertisement of my sound recording business
-Send links to customers and others to specific sounds
-When customers in the studio indicate they need a sound effect for their album, I always recommend Freesound. Typically the sound will be downloaded while we are still recording and incorporated into the project. I instruct bands on the correct way to attribute sounds.
-Except for sounds I have downloaded for other peoples' needs, I typically do not download too many of other peoples freesound samples for my own use. I go and get my own sounds for my own needs
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
-Does seem to be a sense of community among the freesounders.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
-In almost all cases field-recordings are the only types of sounds I am interested in contributing
-Atmospheres/Ambiances are big for me, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles as well
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
-By not accepting full musical pieces freesound sets itself apart
-The strength of the abilities of freesounders means there is a really good batch of sounds available here (Freesounders appear pretty passionate about getting the best sound they can)
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) I use Freesound for new samples to use in my sequences. Many a time, I look for atmospheric recordings like sound fx, thunder, church bells, wind, rain, birds etc. Occasionally I also look for some club style beats, percussive hits and the likes.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) Although I have been a member of this site for several years, I have only just started to get involved with sharing. I'm not sure that a feel a sense of community at this stage, but it is very early days. Certainly the experiences I've had so far have been positive, for example, a query on a sample I recently uploaded. It was good to hear from the moderators and learn more about the mechanics of freesound. I feel there is a good working ethos to the site, and I expect to fall more and more attached to is as time goes by.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) I look for a lot of atmospheric sounds in particular, ones I can create ambient chillout type tracks with. I also love dance and breaks beats, kicks, basslines, all that kind of stuff.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) I find it easier to locate the sounds I am specifically looking for. Log in, search, find and download. Job done Maybe pick up a bonus sound or two along the way
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)I have a 1901 telephone that I want to at least appear to ring when a fax comes in. I found the tone I need on your site, I just need some sort of gizmo to trigger the sound when an incoming fax comes in. Any, all ideas appreciated. Oh by the way, 1901 is not a model number or anything like that--it is a year.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
I have been a member about 5 minutes. So far as I can tell it is a community of users that dig what they can do with sound and editing software. Seems like a real fascinating, very diverse, group of users.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)Telephone double ring right now. I am going to start a podcast/videocast up soon, so I'm sure I will return for more sounds.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) Seems like a very easy site to deal with that has free-spirited computer gurus.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) Having just discovered Freesound the other day I am using it for things like this: http://www.vimeo.com/43737195
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) I seriously just found it last Sunday and really don't know yet.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) Will probably be environment sounds (people on a plaza), military police sounds (action movie sounds). Depends on what I am working on at the time.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) I am not aware of these. I will say having found Freesound it was pretty easy to use.
