1) What do you use Freesound for?
I haven't done much of anything with freesound samples yet, but I intend to alter the sounds, manipulate them and use them in my own projects. I may leave some sounds un-modified as well, but that would be rare.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
I don't know. I just signed up!
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
Sound is sound is sound is frequencies is harmonics is sound. I don't believe in a "type" of sound.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
FreeSound.org must be significant, because I am constantly referred to it, rather than those others. I looked at the home page for 2 minutes and found myself some amazing soundscapes, atmospheres, office workspace samples, and storm sounds. I guess the strongpoint of this website is its quality content and the speed at which a user can find the desired content.
1) I use Freesound for uploading experimentations in my sonic laboratory.
2) The shared goal is to share and share alike.
3) My interest lies in sounds that have not yet been recepted.
4) Freesound differs from other platforms in the ability to integrate as a community, based on sounds alone and not music, which I personally find more interesting and satisfying.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I make 1-2 home videos a year. I just finished making one and used the blooper beep sound used in movies. Now that I've sampled other sounds, I'm feeling inspired to make more videos (I also now have better software and video equipment so my over all process is so much less painful than it used to be, so I should be able to make more).
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Since I just joined, I'm not sure if I can answer this question yet.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
This is pretty random and will depend on my video subject matter and what I'm trying to achieve. But I especially like the movie-like sounds (loud boom foot step a la Jurassic Park, bamboo swish like a Karate move, etc.)
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Ease of use - the site is well laid out and not cluttered with a bunch of ads (or if they're there, I didn't notice). I like that I could get right to finding a sound and when I found it, I didn't have to download other software or view something else or PAY before I got the sound - it was a pretty painless process. I also really, really, really like the accompanying description of how the sound was made. Please keep up the excellent work!
1) I use Freesounds.org sounds in my musical compositions.
2) Love for all music (popular and traditional through to experimental), audio, synthesis, engineering.
3) Sounds I can use within a musical context, especially those with a definite central pitch and especially multisampled to avoid 'munchkinization', interesting or exotic percussion sounds - especially those with multiple dynamics.
4) The sheer diversity ... sounds from newbies (can back off on the electronic bleeps and blurps - got enough of those thanks) to seasoned audio pros (some GREAT location recordings - thanks!!)
Would like to see zip files catered to, so fully mapped sample-sets for specific samplers can be offered - to save users the tedious task of making up programs.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
'Mainly I use Freesound for loops that i put in my music, but i sometimes upload random sounds as well. I occasioanlly use the forum too.'
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
'I don't really have any Freesound-related goals to be honest!'
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
'I like loops and also 'drum kits' that aren't just the basic drum sounds recorded from a kit. I mainly upload raw data sounds.'
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
'I only use soundcloud so here goes: Freesound has no limitations if you don't pay. Soundcloud is really limited if you don't pay and makes my life a pain in the you-know-what.' ^^
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests?
I am a filmmaker, I tend to make/record most of the sounds I use myself but there are times when I find a sound here that is far better then what i had come up with or its just less work to download it here and credit the author then it was to record/synthesize it myself I also like to upload sounds i create/synthezise because I feel I have a lot of high quality work which other filmmakers could really benefit from
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones?
I am not sure if this is accurate but I get the idea that at least some of us, (and likely a lot of us if not downright most of us) are here to create and utilize a valuable pool of sound resources, in essence share what we have and get so that everyone can benefit from our labor and we can benefit from theirs
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
I tend to try and find clean high quality sounds, IE not a lot of background noise, I like sounds with more HTZ and more bits, IE a 96HTZ 32bit sound is more appealing then a 44.1HTZ sound at 16bits. also most of them I use for sound effects in films
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
To this day this is one of the biggest sound libraries I have found which has a respectable nature. IE I can feel pretty safe about downloading and using the sounds because I trust that they are not ripped off recordings made by a massive studio somewhere but rather the people who upload the sounds do own the copyright

1)
I am a composer and sound designer and I use freesound as my main sound library.
2)
Yes, I do think freesound is a community.
3)
I mostly search for Foley live recordings, which can be tricky to single out with so much music loops and beats that often choke the search results
4)
Not sure, I am part of this site a long time now and I have never register in any place else.
Thank you.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...) I use Freesound for adding to my sound library and for seeing what others are creating.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) Yes, I think Freesound is a community. Long-term goals are to meet other sound enthusiasts, develop relations, and perhaps work on group projects.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)Sound effects and voice. I really like sounds that are done with artist's creativity for using everyday objects and getting something fun out of it.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) I feel I am able to participate more because I don't really make beats....like them, just don't make them.

we are continuously researching about Freesound to learn about sounds and online communities, and to be able to use our scientific outcome to improve the site. For this reason, we are now conducting a very small survey to better understand your motivations using Freesound and at the end the nature of Freesound itself. This survey is composed by 4 questions which are listed below. Each question has a little "help text" with more specific questions that may be helpful for your answer. We would like you to reply to this forum post with your answers to the four questions indicated with 1), 2), 3) and 4) (however, don't be afraid to comment on other things you feel relevant).
I was a professional musician for over 20 years before I ever got into using recording equipment from the button-pressing knob-turning slider-sliding end. Fortunately I found this place and the people here have been enormously helpful to me from day one. Being on this side of the mic has been a revelation. Old forum threads are great for reference, I usually check those first before asking stuff.
I upload my recordings of sound effects, field recordings and bits of music, and fulfill the occasional request from the forums.
I enjoy having a place to share the results of my ever-improving recording and engineering skills.
I benefit from the vast communal knowledge of the active forum users, and somebody friendly and generous is always available to answer my technical questions.
I download sounds mostly to give myself ideas for creating my own, and to give myself an idea of what results can realistically be possible. Very occasionally I'll use sounds from here in projects if they're ones I'm unable to realistically capture or create myself.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesound user community? If so, which ones?
(is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Hmmm, shared goals? I'm sure there are some, like preserving sounds for posterity, sharing sounds and knowledge, things like that. I agree with previous posters that I would consider the Freesound 'community' to be the active forum users, who represent only a tiny proportion of the entire Freesound user base. I think the user base as a whole are unlikely to care about the audio topics the forum users are interested in.
I remember not so long ago there was a discussion in which the idea of recording stepping on bugs came up. Some people expressed strong objections to killing creatures solely to record their deaths, and offered many workable ideas to realistically recreate the sounds by other means. I think discussions like that are useful for considering ethical questions related to recording, which one person alone might never think of.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in?
(do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Oh gosh, that can vary enormously depending on what I'm working on at any given time. I suppose at the moment my interests are mainly focused on sound effect events, such as turning on a tap, throwing an item away into a bin, footsteps, things like that. Those are mostly what I upload anyhow.
I might download toilet flushes to compare them to mine, or drum samples for playing around with.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites?
(you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
I don't know the other sites that well. As far as I can tell this is the ONLY site specialised in the limited area of foley, sound fx and field recordings. I extra specially like this specialisation, partly because I think it is the most difficult to achieve well, which means that kills in this area are almost certainly likely to give a person skills in easier recording areas such as ENG or music. I know of no other resource on the web where I can go to ask questions about this particular speciality. The audio engineers in the music industry are always clueless about this stuff.
I find that people who are skilled field recordists really know their shit!
Thank you very much in advance for your participation, we really appreciate your feedback...
We're looking forward to read all your answers that will help us in our research and in the improvement of Freesound!
My pleasure. Thank YOU for all the invaluable resources I have benefitted from over the years. You rock.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
I typically use them in my podcast, and in the future, I might use them in some radio style dramas.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Even thought I have had a Freesound account for some time, I only recently started using it (in fact I uploaded my first sound the other day). That said, I was hoping that the community shared a lot of the same ideas and ideas of the linux/open-source community.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Any and all. I never know what kind of sounds I am going to need until we're written the skit.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
No idea. I've never used any of those. I came here at a friend's recommendation.
P.S.
Why is there no PREVIEW button before saving a post? I mean, seriously???
1) Hobby stop motion movies
2) I think we have in common that we like sounds, and that uploaders are willing to share. I like the high amount of freedom as well.
3) Mostly real sounds, as isolated as possible from other sounds, unless it's a certain type of ambience or acoustics that matters.
4) The clearly defined terms of use?
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Sound design fx to add a subtle realism to my youtube music videos
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
Sharing sounds. Having used lots of sounds from freesound members, I felt keen to give something back so I have recorded and uploaded some sounds.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) I particularly liked the challenge that was set to collect old machine soungs like a museum. When it comes to sound fx for my videos, ones I have used quite a bit include wind, crowds shouting, spaceship sounds based on combining machine hum sounds with blips and bleeps.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Very user friendly, and thousands of free sounds - mostly recorded with decent quality.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? …)
I primarily use the sound for short films and animations, I'm a sound designer and most projects I work on have a very tight budget.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? …)
share & share alike. I love to see the projects ppl have used my samples for and visa vers, I love sharing.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones?…)
foley, foley and FOLEY!
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Sense of community…plus mostly those other sites have music loops, beat samples, etc. Whereas Freesound has mostly sounds. If I need the sound of morning in Australia, I search the term and viola…I get 30 mins of bush birds singing. Also, there is just so much foley on offer! It suits my purposes as a struggling artist!

1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Use it for music; would also like to get into soundtracks, so I will probably use freesounds for that purpose too.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
I haven't been active in the freesound community very long -- long time lurker -- but it seems friendly and helpful. I'd say there is a sense of community; dares showcase this, as does the sample request forum, users remixing/cleaning samples and resharing them, certain collaborative efforts other than dares, general discussion, etc.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Downloading: Pretty much whatever I need/want/find interesting. I don't download synth sounds much though; usually make my own or tweak presets instead.
Uploading: Not much yet. A dare entry, and a scream...that's it. Will be uploading recordings from my zoom h2 soon though; ambiance, foley, etc.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Honestly, I haven't used any of these except soundcloud, which, obviously, is totally different.
Extra suggestion: Why not make this topic a sticky?
Cheers,

Answer:
For my videos, like everybody else.

Answer:
Uh, idunno?
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
Answer:
Any really, I have use for loads of various saounds and effects.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Answer:
NO survey.. If survey comes, I think I will never use this place again.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)I'm here to find sounds to use in music recording.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...) I'm sensing a spirit of sharing among the users who upload sounds here. I think there's probably a whole other subset of people who are here just to browse and download. I'm not sure there's a sense of community among that group which, guiltily-admitted, includes myself.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...) Emergency alarms/emergency noises and nature sounds.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others) I can't see what keeps the site in business. The sharing is free, there aren't any ads and I haven't been asked to purchase a paid subscription. With most websites that are information resources, a user can see what pays the bills. I'd like to know about that.
This site is amazing. Keep on the good work, you people are gods in the world. They should build for you a throne in the sky.
1) What do you use Freesound for? (what are your specific interests? what do you do with Freesound samples? ...)
Downloading and uploading sounds for making music.
2) Do you perceive some shared goals in Freesounds user community? If so, which ones? (is there a sense of community? and of long-term goals to be achieved? ...)
A goal of freely presenting the world with a collection of sounds for use in various projects.
3) What kinds of sounds are you most interested in? (do you upload and/or download specific types of sounds? which ones? ...)
I like a broad range of sounds, I've donwloaded nature ambience and drum sample packs. I upload a similar range of sounds.
4) What makes Freesound different from other sound sharing sites? (you can compare with sites like Soundcloud, Looperman, CCMixter or others)
Its all about the samples, soundcloud covers alot of music as well as various sounds... but its hard to sift through. Freesound is where I come when I need a sound, and it inspired me to get a portable recorder and share back to the community.
