Hello all,
for freesound 2.0 we want to keep everything as low-profile as possible.
for the "private" messages we were thinking: why use private messages.
It would just as easily be done with regular emails!
Especially if freesound sends you another email saying: you have a private
message. I personally don't like private messaging because it's an additional step.
i.e. in http://freesound.org/people/bram/contact/ (example URL, obviously does not work... this would be visible only for signed in users!)
your email: [ input box pre-filled with your freesound email address ]
your message
[
]
instead of having private messaging.
The advantages: it's faster and easier and simpler to program
The disadvantages: if you reply the user, he has your email address!

Maybe send and reply could be done Sneakemail-style. You don't send mails directly to another user, but they're sent through Freesound. So somebody sends me a msg on the contact page, I get an e-mail from a Freesound server. If I reply, it arrives at Freesound, which sends it back to the other user, hiding my e-mail addy.
This of course has its disadvantages too though.
I fully agree with hammerklavier, wouldn't like my email address being automatically available upon replying.
I also fear such a system could become a candy to spammers, which every day would open dozens of new freesound accounts to access the 50000 addresses available here (!)

nono, dobroide, that's not correct:
I propose a form, on freesound that let's you contact the user, NOT showing the email address!
But, once you get that email - you might want to reply, which then -as HK says- results in the person contacting you getting your email address.

I vote for private messaging over email as I don't want clutter cluttering my main inbox and private messages are handled entirely internaly.
I totally agree with hammerklavier.
you could reduce the max amount of messages for every PMail box:
in exchange, I would find useful a "save as text" function to easily save PMessages before deleting.
if the new site will offer the same "You have 1 new message" alert when one log in, I do not see the reason for ebots.
I think that giving e-mails is too risky and it's easy way to get a lot of spam so i prefer private messages
I still vote the way I did before. As well as the points I mentioned previously, some members mention email alerts showing that a new private message has arrived. You don't need to keep that setting on; you can change it via your profile. In fact, I always keep the setting turned off; when I log in, it always tells me if I have a new message or not. I think, that we are OK where we are now, and the people seem to have spoken and agreed with me; I don't know when poling closed, but 68% of people agreed with me and voted against the Government in political terms. But this is exactly how a proper democratic process should work; admin puts up an idea, and then we debate and vote on it. I think I like this.
