Maybe it would be a smart idea to start some project regarding automatic tagging system for sounds? System that suggests tags according to filenames, description and - according to sonic content.

Some initial cues.

Tags according to filename and description. This part reguires some expandable database of keywords associated with "power" function (meaning/importance/signifficance recognition).

Tags according to sonic content would need something maybe similar to what youtube has. Some basic sound recognition like beat, sonic footprints (like instruments or sonic trends) and so on.

Then - when uploading sounds - system could suggest a list of tags from which user could accept them all or select something adding his own words.

Maybe there are some open source projects/systems which could be simply used, and maybe it's a good idea to develop one from here, from freesound?

Regarding manual tagging, from my experience there are two issues. Time (vs laziness) and lack of effective tag related vocabulary (lack of verbal imagination, which sometimes just pops up).

I LOVE this idea, so many times i struggle to think up suitable tags, just sitting there scratching my head.

So let's at least try to find and post some links to already existing projects that could do the job. It will make easier to Bram and others to make some decisions and to find useful stuff regarding that area.

How would those programs deal with the cultural differences which become mixed here? Do the programs need an orientation to begin with or would the initial database of terms come from a particular cultural viewpoint?

Well, this system should integrate them and make freesound search results more "reliable". That's how I see it.

we are actually thinking about how to easy up the tagging process and have been developing a tag recommendation system. For the moment it is only a "research" thing, but if we get it to work reasonably well we will definitely implement it on freesound!

Maybe you could share some details? I guess some folks might be familiar with, and maybe (or maybe newcomers through google for example) they could suggest something?
