Hey guys,
I'm an indie iOS and Mac developer (my apps: http://davander.com).
I've used freesound.org to find many of the sounds I use in my app CatPaint (http://catpaint.info), and also when noodling around with electronic music composition. I was recently on freesound.org looking for sounds for a new project when I noticed the excellent API you guys have built.
Since then, I've gotten completely sidetracked from whatever it is I was doing before, and I've been working on an iPad app for searching and collecting sounds from freesound.org. I've reached the stage of beta testing, and I would love to get some testers, and feedback from potential users.
Right now the features slated for 1.0 are pretty basic. I was aiming for the "minimum viable product" feature set:
I have a whole slough of ideas for expanding on the functionality, if the app does well. Two features I'd definitely like to see in the future are exporting attribution lists to various file formats, and advanced queries. I'd love to hear your suggestions as well!
A hot little preview of what the app looks like right now:
I've cc-ed this directly to the admins, so hopefully if they have any concerns about how I'm using the API, they'll let me know directly
Please send me a private message, with your email address included, if you're interested in beta testing. You'll need an iPad running iOS 6 or greater, and a Dropbox account. If you don't already have a Dropbox account you can sign up for one here http://db.tt/SLjK6z2
I suppose it should go without saying, but I love freesound.org, and want to see it do well. With that in mind, I will definitely be donating some of the profits from the app, assuming there are profits, to the site. I don't want this kind of thing to be a drain on the awesome work you guys are doing.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!! when you finish this PLEASE make it also for android......please

heasley2, I've sent you instructions via private message.

I would love to support Android, but the effort required is impossibly huge for a solo developer. I wish it was easy to do both, but without going to crappy non-native toolkits that make cross-platform (but crappy) apps, it's just not doable.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I still have room for a couple more beta testers, so if you're interested or know someone who is, message me. All you have to do is install the app, use it, and tell me what you think and if it's flakey for you at all.
Thanks people!
Great idea, but I am iPhone- and Mac-equipped, but no plans for getting an iPad (though the iPad Mini is mighty tempting). If you ever figure out how to squeeze the real estate needs to iPhone screens size, or come out with a companion product for OSX, I’d be interested.
Blindmanbert,
An iPhone app is definitely on the roadmap.
The kind of search-and-collect workflow I'm aiming for is definitely best suited to the iPad, which is why I started there. That said, with a little bit of tuning the app would still be quite useful on the iPhone.
A Mac app could be possible eventually, but I'm not planning on it right now. For one thing, the things the app does are fairly easy to do via the browser + finder. If the app matures into something that could compete with that, I'll start planning a Mac version
Thanks for the feedback!
Hello!
I'm so glad you have taken the time to create this. It's what we've all been waiting for.
I have an iPhone and a Macbook. I would love to test the beta software.
So please sign me up.
my e-mail address is: s.saluci@gmail.com
Hey Pieck101,
Thanks for your interest! I was aiming for a 1.0 in December, I even got as far as getting the app approved, but then a couple things happened.
1. I got very busy with the holidays.
2. Feature creep.
Now that the holiday craziness has subsided, I'm back working on the app. Feature creep wise, there's going to be two major changes to the app. First, it'll be a universal app (iPhone and iPad) at launch. And second, I'm overhauling the collection system to be a little less dependent on Dropbox.
I'm now aiming for a February release.
If you're interested in beta testing you can sign up using this link:
I'm particularly interested in people who can test the iPhone version!
Once you've signed up (and activated your device) I can upload a build that is signed for your device.
(Previous beta testers: I've switched beta-delivery platforms because I found Hockey to be fraught with issues. You'll have to sign up for Testflight using the link above if you want to get any more betas, sorry for the inconvenience!)
Hi Coryalder,
I am also interested in hearing how your project is doing.
I am developing a sound board/cart app.
How has the response from the admins been?
I can't find anything about the project on your blog.
Cheers,
Hey Palulf,
The response from the admins has been great / helpful. The only criticisms were directed at the way my app was handling attribution, which was definitely lacking in the betas they saw.
The app was set back a fair bit by other projects, and by Dropbox releasing their Sync SDK which lured me into re-writing my Dropbox interface, but it's still coming along... in fact I've been spending most of my free time on it the past two weeks.
Feel free to contact me via email if you want to chat more about it.
Everyone else, thanks for your patience. This'll teach me to not announce release dates
Betas coming soon.
Hi, I would love to see this app also (but it's been several years since the OP last wrote anything about it, so I hope all is well).
After 2 hours of research, I finally found something that allows you to download freesound content to Dropbox when using an iPad: Downloader by Savy Soda
