Hi,
I'm thinking of adding a rule to freesound to stop unlimited downloading without uploading. I was thinking that for each 1000 sounds there should at least be one uploaded sound. Or perhaps stop people who download the complete database at 1000 samples and say "you have to upload at least one sound before you can download again"
Please vote in the poll.
I cannot vote on the poll for some reason, but I'm torn on that one. I have uploaded a lot more than I have downloaded so I should agree with making people contribute... However in the interest of the spirit of this project (as I see it anyway) it seems a bit restrictive. I think uploading should be encouraged but not mandated... We should get the poll working to get a consensous... it's not functioning for me...
Lastly, when I pay my cable bill I will upload some new sounds... sitting at work watching and listening is not as fun as creating and uploading!
The days of a totally free internet and something for nothing are long gone, Even uploading 1 upload for every 100 files downloaded is an easy swap and still takes no time or energy.

The days of a totally free internet and something for nothing are long gone,
uhh... you sure? uploaders here are basically giving something for nothing
it may sound weird but the more compulsory the whole thing, the less prone to uploading I become... Perhaps it's a problem of my psychology or something, but with some people that's the way it is, sorry.
Also, I wonder what's the fuss about reaching 8K, 10K, or any other numbers.. I didn't know there was a contest...
freesound is getting very soon to 500GB (!!!) / month of transfer, more than 200 new people sign up per day (resulting in lot's of emails being sent about logins not working), .
I have to justify the work spent on freesound and drain on resources. Right now the only return from freesound we have is sounds we can use for research in the institute...
so, we have to try to encourage people to upload.
hence the graph on the front page and this thread...

The days of a totally free internet and something for nothing are long gone,Uploaders are also downloading....hence the fair exchange. It's all about give and take imo...
not being a hater sonic. just stating a fact. I don't need to get sounds from here cuz i make them myself. but i find it fun to add stuff here and have lots to add..but my wife just had our first baby so u can imagine how hard it is to sit down and do some serious uploading and work.
fact is people use this site for sounds...not just the likes of us..but normal folks to who need simple snippet of some sound. In my thoughts.let them DL as much as they want..but yes i agree they should give back..at least rate the sounds they DL? make them give back feed back? something. but always remember
we do this for them
we have the sounds
we don't need them
they do.
the way I see it this really depends on what you're trying to achieve with the freesoundproject.. If you want to make a sound design tool just for sound designers, please go ahead and restrict downloading - Sometimes we all need a bit of pressure to perform.
However, if you want a sound design tool for *everyone*, then I think restrictions would be a very bad idea. The remarkable thing about freesound is that the quality of sounds is really good - it's a lot better than search-engines like findsounds for instance, and that's because people only bother uploading if they feel the quality of their ul is good. That would change - ppl would be uploading because they *had to*, even though they knew the quality of their work wasn't up to spec. So joe-nobody would ul some recordings made with his cell-phone, etc..
As more of a composer than sound designer, I find this resource great to get ideas going on the fly. I'm not sure whether the joe-nobody tag if fair though. Everyone is on here for different reasons, sometimes my (dodgy) creative efforts require something lo-fi, so the cell phone recording might be what i'm after. It's a difficult call, but I reckon there is a way round it. The use of tagging should be utilised and explained more, that may help....Those who are serious about their sounds could tag them with suitable words, whereas joe-nobody probably wouldn't bother, or at least tag differently.

I agree. There could be too many sounds to sift through if it took that course, hence the creative use of tagging.
While I agree a free resource is great, how about a "contribution" option for those willing (and able to!) maybe this could tie into an exclusive area, while still keeping a (possibly restricted) area for totally free stuff.
I know this may go against the whole ethic of the thing, i'm just thinking out aloud as I go along here.
