I would suggest some "white list" for approved uploaders (according to... no legal issues with sounds vs amount of sounds vs how long are registered vs manual approving?), so that their sounds appear automatically, and moderators only check them when they have the time. So moderators would do the same job anyway, but sounds would not be blocked on first place.
Current moderation system is simply outdated.
Bram?
i mentioned this a few months ago too..... I understand the legal aspect - and can see why they might be careful.. But I do wish they could do it more like say youtube - where if there is a breach or complaint then take down occurs..
Yeah. What stops me from posting new sounds are often the moderation times. Sometimes there are things that I'd like to show to my friends or associates "right now" and leave it here for further exploration, but... "maybe week later" just crashes the context and meaning of such actions.
I could upload lossless stuff to bandcamp, but I don't want to do the mess there. Their place is for albums.
Developing "white list" of approved uploaders on first place, and then - maybe adjusting the policy to what is on youtube (I understand, that the second part might be a "dirty job" for folks involved, especially because of "copyright trolls" who claim ownership "just because they can") would simplify a lot.
There is a whitelist (I'm on it :¬) I think the threshold is 500 samples uploaded without problems.
SoundCloud worth a look for sharing sounds ... http://soundcloud.com/search?q=sound%20effects

There's no definitive 'threshold' you speak of. It depends on a few contributing factors.
Somehow I don't like soundcloud. I have there an account, filled with some samples, but due to commercialization, in comparison to freesound - it's not a service worth to pay attention to.
@Timbre - don't say it out loud

I haven't noticed any adverts on SoundCloud , except a few discrete plugs for other artistes on SoundCloud. [ Unlike say YouTube where I am subjected ads for Grab-a-granny "mature dating" ]
NB: you can share a private link to a sample on SoundCloud if you don't want it viewed by everyone.
On soundcloud - account limitations (at least were) and horrible design (the only cool is the player concept with comments, but that's all).
What kind of freesounder I would be?
As well I could upload things to ftp server.
Freesound adds context and taste/aesthetics.
I expect freesound to expand.
It's not a matter of dis/loyalty, it's a matter of practical context. If you wish to do one things, you go to facebook, f you wish to do other things, you go to bandcamp, if you wish to do yet another things - you go to freesound. Context is something connected to "social".
Anyway, some practical improvements should be made.
As for Sun - you will be waiting not so long as you believe. This year we have re-polarization of its magnetic field, which means - it (the magnetic field) ends to contract, and it will expand within next few months. It happens every 11 years. But this time - we (the "mainstream") can monitor it live as it happens.
I might suggest a "pre-mod" trustee group made up of 100 or so individuals, who are given privileges which enable them to access a sandbox of un-moderated files, just to get them moving forward. The "clean" uploaded files could be passed on to the next level, up the chain. Any rejected or questionable upload could have recourse thru Admin. This could be a real time saver for the Mods, especially on the longer files. You could also allow the pre-mods access to sounds (or samples) that have been rejected in the past, so they can get an idea of what needs to happen.
So what if a commercial sound gets through? There's always going to be a clod in the beans at some point. Everybody knows it. Someone complains? Poof, it's gone from the site. http://www.freesound.org/people/Robinhood76/sounds/178318/
You could also tie in the uploads with forum participation. With 50 posts in the forums, you can get a good idea of intent and whether an individual is sincere. They can post in their mother tongues. If they're interesting enough, other people can and WILL translate or summarize their ideas for others.
Loosen up! It's all about the sound anyway.

And "poof" Freesound potentially has to employ a lawyer $$$$.
A lawsuit is one thing and collecting on it is another.
If you can't trust your membership, who CAN you trust? (Do you trust anyone?) My guess is that there's most likely a judge or two, that's a sound addict and active here plus, if you're going to be all paranoid all the time, you really need to consider just how much damage an inadvertent sound byte can do. Let the mega-players like you.tube hire lawyers and then follow their lead. Maybe we just shouldn't be sitting in a corner and stabbing ourselves with a thousand rotten scenarios. Instead, we lead.

May I suggest getting a Skydrive or Dropbox or Google Docs account? Just use those. you can upload HUGE files and you can send them links of your work. You can even link entire folders at once. that is literally the easiest way possible to send someone something on the internet.
you just need to let them know that they, too, will need to have an account for whichever vendor you are using as your cloud. they just need to log into their own skydrive, dropbox, or docs account, so that the clouds can track who is downloading because they have 3 options when you share something, if you want it to be public, on a "who has the link only" basis, or on a "private group" of people, which is why they have to log in, so that skydrive or dropbox or Docs knows if said person is allowed to view your link.

On Google docs (aka Google Drive) the recipient does not have to have a Google account and sign-in to download the file if you use the share setting "anyone who has the link".
Hey guys,
There actually IS a whitelist and we add people to it once in a while. But there are some difficulties with communicating users between the mods: there is no easy way to say "hey, shouldn't this guy be whitelisted". There is no threshold, there is no automatic whitelisting. ( Also, ayamahambho, don't feel offended you aren't on the list: you probably SHOULD be! )
In any case the moderation needs to change in the future and this is something we've discussed internally a few times over the last year. The idea of having a very large group of moderators (i.e. people that -for example have X amount of sounds on the site?) that help with moderating content in an automated way.
5 moderators looked at the content and all think it's cool -> post it.
Something like that...
