Is freesound going to make you pay for downloading sounds like on www.soundsnap.com ?
I'm asking because I'm thinking that one day we will have to.
It probably will not because it would ruin the website["freesound.org]
Please Respond
Soundsnap makes you pay for download? That is news to me! I have never had to do so, all though I can download as a guest user without registering! You are, however forced to pay to download on:
www.audiosparx.com
but, you can just download previews or pay on
www.tradebit.com
Odd isn’t it…
I use these sites as well as freesound to get samples of different things.
I believe timtube is talking about http://www.soundsnap.com/node/54658 ( revenue sharing on soundsnap )
I'll let Xavier Serra - the director of MTG ( http://www.mtg.upf.edu ) - reply to this question.
MTG is the university branch of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. MTG is the legal owner of Freesound, I'm the guy that runs/writes/supports it for them.

At the MTG we very much believe in the current CC model for Freesound.org and thus we would not want to change that in the future. Furthermore Freesound belongs to its community, to all the active users, and we will make sure that it develops together with their needs and desires. I doubt that the community would accept a funding model based on paying for sounds.
xserraAnd this is why freesound wins. Thank you!

Wow I never realized that Xavier was the owner and you were the the script manager and support guy. That would be funky if "Freeound" was pay only
That wouldn't make much sense being as ANYONE can upload sounds and become part of the community. The logic would for this to happen would have to be. Paid membership.
I don't see that happening anytime soon. Being as the community already killed the thought of google ads (oh how I'm sure we can recall that debate).
Besides freesounds attraction to so many is the very fact that DL are free. Lets be real-the internet communites in general don't like paying sites (okay maybe porn but that's another topic). Freesound becomes a site that charges...it will be offline the following week. Unless it goes back to its FREE ways.
its called freesounds for a reason.

Yes, recently, another sound sharing website, soundsnap, bit the dust by asking its membership to pay for downloading more than 5 samples a month. I reckon that soon our site will be one of the only ones who offer sound effects for free. I don't think we can stand for this grotesque attitude; we are in a global recession aren't we? Anyway, I am pleased that Bram is keeping this site free. Bram, I cannot extend my thanks to you enough. Keep up the good work! There might be some things we disagree on, but this is not one. Can you reassure us once and for all that this will be the case?
Please reply, I would be interested to know your views.
Cheers.
Matthew Galtress,
I believe this was replied by both me and Xavier Serra, MTG's director. Freesound will never charge for content. In the future we *might* charge for other things, but we will never charge for content. I.e. you will always be able to use freesound, download and upload sounds, for free.
One example of commercial usage could be: if we make some kind of way where companies can access Freesound's content via an API, we might charge for commercial usage of this API. For example, say that there would be a freesound browser inside Cubase, we might charge Seinberg for allowing this. This is just an example so you understand, not a real example!
Both Xavier and me firmly believe that charging for content is an archaic way of thinking about media that will soon go the way of the dinosaurs.
- Bram
Bramam assured by that answer. I know that user Sampleconstruct is also a user on soundsnap, and on soundanp Sampleconstruct actively applauded such an act. I send you a message stating that my downloads had been whiped, well they have now been restored! Happy days! Where as the 'online users' section gone? Or is no one logged on.

Applause for fantastic Freesound.org - I'm a proud user of this site and rejoice in what FreeSound represents.
I've recently started working in the video on demand industry and it seems that most believe that in the future most video content will be advertising supported - including TV, music videos and films. The same situation could be possible for music audio, but the path is less clear due to obstinate major labels. It seems freesound can proposer under this model and is well prepared for the future, so with the consumption of media going the way it is and with Bram at the helm, I have a strong faith things will be ok for Freesound.
