Hi i am new to the world of free downloads and music production and was wondering is it safe to download free sounds?

Using this site for 2.5 years, I have not run into any viruses (and I suspect it is impossible since the only files uploaded here are .wav, .mp3 etc. sound files, as opposed to .zips and other files that could carry malware).

As for other sites, I can't say for sure how safe it is to download sounds. Usually if the download is as a .wav or .mp3 file, the chance for a virus is very low. But if the download is part of a .zip folder or something else, I would do a little more research of the site before downloading.

With downloading sound effects from YouTube links, I've read some comments of users getting viruses when they download from there, so take extra care if you follow download links from YouTube.
