As far as I know, you can't.
Have you tried lowering your volume, or does the lowest level still produce too much input?
And out of curiosity (and perhaps someone else could help you out with this), what is your sound card?
I find this problem with lots of websites.
I assume for other system sounds from your computer the level is set right.
If you are using Windows this is what I do.
On the bar at screen bottom click the loudspeaker symbol & a level slider pops up. Below the slider click the word Mixer. A window pops up with a slider for each program you're using. Here you can adjust the slider for your browser (firefox for me). This won't change levels for other programs and it will stay on screen till you close it. The level you set will be remembered for the next time you open the browser.
A little long winded, but easy enough to remember once you've done it a few times.
Regards Wibby.
Thank you for your answers!

Sorry Anton, I don't know anything about Mac OS. I'm sure there's lots of Mac users on Freesound who don't have this problem so I hope one of them can help.

I'm using Mac OSX
Most sound cards don't allow separate system volume control outside of the main output level. Also, browsers don't have an innate volume control and neither does this site. You can however get an extension for chrome that will allow you to adjust volume levels per page.
This extension works really well, there is a master slider and a slider for each page streaming audio.
Hope this helps.
Is there a reason there's no volume control then, STILL?
Good lord almighty.
