I just had an idea that would (hopefully) make things VASTLY easier to search for files.
When someone uploads a file and goes to make a description they'd be prompted to include information about what microphone they used (or DAW if it's done in MIDI). There could also be categories for tonal quality, location recorded, and a section for whether it's musical or sound effect.
There might also be a check box for whether or not the sound is loopable.
If someone is looking for a specific sound for a song, all they'd have to do is open a search, select Musical, and enter the necessary criteria (cello, contact mic) and voila. If they simply want a recording of a cello, regardless of whether it was recorded with a contact mic, they could simply leave that box blank and every file tagged "musical, cello" would come up.
Pros: Easy, efficient searching.
Cons: The old sound files on the server would have to abide by these programming rules so everyone who's ever submitted a sound would have to edit the settings for each sound.
Does anyone have any improvements on this idea? Does it sound feasible? Would it make our Freesound experience easier?
I think having more categories would be really useful and these are all good ideas.
-------a couple of thoughts
In the musical category and with a sound based around one note on the chromatic scale,it would help to know what note it was,or if serial notes, what key it was in.Imagine searching C major and getting hundreds of sounds that all fit together!
It would also be useful to know in advance how clean a sound is (signal to noise ratio)...so important in mixing.
As you mention,i suspect that feasibility is the big question here!
