I have down tried downloading 3 files now, but it seems to be a strange way... right click and save link as? It works, though. The file ends up on my desktop, but when I double click them, I get errors. The file is aiff as well as wav . I tried converting them to mp3, but that wont work. Whats with these files? Am I missing something? Love the site by the way. Any help would be appreciated
-have real player
-have windows media player
-using firefox
I use Firefox (V3.0.10) and have it set up via tool/options to save files to my desktop. If I RIGHT CLICK the download link I don't get the "save file" option, but if I LEFT CLICK, it opens up the "file save-as" dialogue and I save it normally.
I guess the "right-click/save file as" instruction works for Internet Explorer, but in Firefox "left-click" actually downloads properly. Depending on the configuration options in Firefox, and which players are embedded, the file will either be saved, or else your default media player will be opened and the file will start playing. Again exactly which of these occurs can be changed by configuring firefox. Alternatively, if a media player is loaded then you can still use its "files/save-as" option to save it to disc.
"Save link as" does not actually save the file, but creates a short cut to the URL of the file on the remote server.
Long winded answer, but I hope it helps.
@ hammerhead_05 :
For me, "right click" and "save as" on the "download image" works fine. I am using Firefox ( 3.0.10 ) for Linux ( Ubuntu ) .
After downloading the Sound, you can play it with an Audio Editor, like the Free and Open Source one, called "Audacity". Windows Media Player can be an ***hole sometimes, so you better use Audacity or something else . You can download Audacity for free at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows?lang=en
If you have the Flash Plugin ( aka Flash player ) installed in Firefox, you'll get a small button on top of the waveform view of every sound, here at freesound. It will let you play an mp3 preview of the sound, before you download it.

Hi jivatma07.
In my windows vista / firefox set-up "save as" does not appear as an option. You can only chose "save link" or "save image", neither of which is what we want. I've not been able to alter configuration to make it available - it's not even a "greyed-out" option.
I think perhaps it's just one of the ways that some programs work differently between windows and unix. If I was to crinkle my eyebrows in scorn however it would be at microsoft and not unix or firefox. Vista is a very sharp and protracted pain in the posterior IMO!
best regards.
There apparently is a bug in Firefox concerning right-click 'Save As...' function. It is advised to use an alternative browser (such as Opera) to download sounds. Though if I understood correctly, there's a workaround with plugins and stuff, but I have no clue how it works.

I am sorry. The correct option is called "save target as" or "save link target as" (i have to translate it, because i am using the german version of firefox)
Hahaa.., actually in my firefox "save target as" or "save link target as" don't appear in right click context menu either on that particular download link. Still I don't have a problem, as I say, because left click does exactly what I want.
As long as you have a solution.
I am impressed with your English; I never would have guessed you were not from UK or US by your writing.
EDIT.
In my old age I lost track of the original question asked by hammerhead 05 in this thread. I have just re-read the first post, so I will have another go at trying to be helpful.
Firefox can be configured on what you want it to do with downloaded files as follows:-
Go to "Tools"..."Options". In the window that opens click "Applications". On the left it will display a list of every file type it recognises and on the right it will show the action it will take with that type. If you click on the righthand action pane a drop down list will let you select from various options, which will include Save, Use a program to open, Always ask etc.. Chose whichever action you would like to see for that file type. Personally, for all media files I have mine set to ask so that I can choose.
Cheers.
I just tried using Internet Explorer, and everything works perfect. Go figure. Thanks for all your help! Have a good day!
@ strangely_gnarled :
Yes, right, as long as it works, everything is just fine ^_^ .
Maybe it's simply called "save as" and not "save [link] target as" - i don't know, but oh well..

Yes, i'm from Germany, here born and grown up. Not that i'm proud of that, but to show you, that it's possible to learn English as a second language at least so good, that it's possible to understand others and write understandable ( is there such a word? ) sentences in the second laguage.
I do not know, if my spoken english sounds as good as of e. g. a guy or girl who speaks English as their native language. Maybe my spoken english sounds a bit like denglish ( sounds like "dang-lish" ) ( english with a strong german accent - but most of the time this word means a mixture of english and german words, which can sound very funny and unprofessional ) .
I learned english at school and later, i tried to refine it with the help of the net/internet. And i don't try to translate every single word from german to english, but to think in english - and that's the main point, i guess, where it goes interesting. If you want, you can add me to your ICQ-Buddy-list or MSN ( my ICQ Number can be found in my profile - for MSN Buddy Name, just ask, please ), if you have one of that Messengers. Then we can chat about Sound design and stuff like that a bit, if you have time for something like that .
Oh well, now i have written so much about that single theme/topic hock: . Sorry ops: .
@ hammerhead_05 :
You are welcome
Have a good day too ^^

Hi .Ingo.

Thanks for the kind thought Ingo but I'm afraid I don't have ICQ or MSN or anything.
(Hahaa... I don't even have a mobile phone or a wristwatch - I lead an isolated lifestyle so 99 percent of the time I am in the audience and not on the Stage.)
in firefox, I mostly just left-click on the download links.
depending on what file it is, sometimes firefox or quicktime will open the file, but that's not a problem.
just let it load/play then choose "save as" from the file menu, and you're there.
I agree that right now it's a bit of a mess, but browsers handling files in different ways (especially media files) is a pain in the ***!!

Thanks Bram. That vindicates my first reply. (I doubt myself sometimes.)
As I describe further down this thread I have re-configured Firefox to "Ask" what I want it to do with all media file types. There are some, often obscure, links that try to open very dubious media files with embedded links - especially if you have java(script) enabled.
(I still rate Firefox over IE (I've no experience of other browsers) because with a little experience it's set-up is more transparent and it leaves me feeling still in control - unlike IE's opaque descriptions, unhelpful explanations and it's habit of quietly talking to other servers under the sheets. Okay I admit it, I'm paranoid.)
