LGCan we all take a deep breath now and chill out, and instead of trying to stop people from doing things we don't like, encourage them to do the things we do like?Don't worry Bram, this discussion surfaces every now and then, and it is healthy to discuss it... At the end of the day, the current policy is still the best.

14,233 downloads: (three of mine in their last 20).
Fourteen thousand downloads ! , Zero contributions.
If Freesound's servers go tits-up you could ask this individual for a back-up copy,
(although I supect that they would tell you to "#### off" if you did).
What about a hall of shame to list the worst offenders ?, (downloads-contributions)>1000.
Timbre,
Picture,if you will,a teacher in a school in (say) rural Patagonia. There are computers but no internet connection. In order to give the students a wide range of sounds to choose from the teacher has downloaded 14233 freesounds, compressed and dropped them on DVD...........why not?
Perhaps this is a more plausible explanation than someone who wants to keep freesound but believes the days of the internet are numbered.......but again, why not?
I think i am right in saying that as long as downloaders give credit when they use freesounds, then all is well......
So POSITIVE THINKING seems to be the way to go here.

Here is my positive message to mega-downloading zero-contributors ...

That was fun, here's a likely answer:

Take it easy man, think of karma...

That's a good one!

I never knew that people would start using uploads to score political points off each other!
I think that it has been made very clear that the current system is the best.

Is the problem the Freesound FTP applet? Or a stand-alone FTP application? You are not using a command-line FTP program by any chance? (That would make it easy for me to give instructions, as I use command-line FTP programs on Linux.)
No offense intended, but I think you are overreacting. Sure it can be frustrating when there are users who download hundreds samples without a peep from them, but isn't that what this site was intended for?
Let's say you're an average guy/girl who wants to gather a collection of white noise. He's/she's successful at blending all the samples together for his/her personal use-whether it be to help insomnia, annoy neighbors or just to relax-yet he/she still sucks at making his own sound-effects/samples. Should he/she have a f_cking limit on how many times he can use what is essentailly a free service? That'd be ludicrous and detract from the practicality and indeed the fun of the site.
Besides, I'd rather have a few good users uploading great samples than a huge amount of users who upload unimaginative, useless or poor quality samples. You can debate on what is "useless" or "unimaginative" all you want, but when I see an hour long sample of some dude watching TV while scratching his belly that's when I start to lose hope.

Hmm, and there I was thinking this was called thefreesoundproject as opposed to thefreeonconditionofuploadsoundproject
Couldn't have said it better myself
My final word on the subject. A user who just downloaded one of mine has only been a member for one month but in that time has managed to download 52,439 samples, and of course has contributed nothing.
That’s about 1800 a day ! ,
I didn't think that level of consumption was even possible: this leech must be permanently attached to the Freesound server.
As I have said if there are resources to support this level of greed then there is no problem.
However if more users do what leechy is doing it would be tantamount to a denial of service attack.
Update: in the time it has taken me to write this message this user has downloaded another three.
[ BTW leechy has even downloaded my message to mega-downloading zero-contributors ]

Yeah, and the answer too:

Seriously, I'm reasonably sure such 'users' are in fact robots, but what intrigues me is: do they get the accompanying descriptions and tags or not? Without that the samples can be quite useless...
D
"Getting all 60K samples, but not getting the tags/description gives you a completely useless heap of samples"
......So the only good thing about this is that i am now a little wiser?
